Glenn,
no a/c but the power windows do help. |

I never roll down the windows in the Mustang for fear of them never going back up lol.

With a project like the Super 10 a number of things are vital. One on the most vital pieces of the project is good help.
Because of good help the Super 10 has progressed from a S - 10 "core" to an almost read to race package in about 10 months. My friend Monte is one of the vital help links. His fabrication skills and ideas and accuracy and experience are priceless. Tonight we finalized the bed cover. Just a few details and it is finished. It will have a Dzus button on each rear corner and a captured prop rod when finished. Just now I am concentrating on items necessary to race at the Texas Motorplex July 25th. The longer range schedule is D 4 Lucas race in September at Thunder Road. |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
I recommend the "internal hex" Dzus buttons. Try them, you'll like them. Easy to snap locked and much less chance of the tool slipping and gouging the paint.

In an earlier post I mentioned the necessity of having help. I am blessed to have a core group that will rally to the deadline and get the small items taken care of.
#230 is "Flash" bolting up the catch/recovery can #231 is Dr Watkins detail supplies #235 is Watkins himself. You know things are coming together when washing, vacuum, and wax are on the short list. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
also note the "chair" Flash is working from. It is a mid 80's Firebird seat mounted on an office chair platform.
We are serious with our fabrication :) |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
I was not up to speed with the Motorplex schedule and D 4 S/SS combo race until Sunday afternoon. We were already focused on that date for the bracket race and now we have the bonus of super stock!
The Super 10 will compete in it's first super stock race July 25th at Texas Motorplex. This will be a busy final week completing a number of items but we will make it. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Just considering something;
Q - How do you know you are a hard core drag race team? A - You make plans to race an unmoved under it's own power, untested combination in 98 + Texas heat. And most likely will run both the S/SS combo and the no box bracket race. This defines hard core. |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Rich,
I did just the opposite. Drove from East Texas to Atlanta Georgia and bought a car that I should not have bought. It would have been a much better decision to turn around and go home without the car. Hard Core must have a hard head piece to the equation. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Not to hi jack the thread, just curious....
Rich, what was wrong with the 65 chevelle??? If you rather not say on the forum just pm me....thanks...norm |

The Super 10 is race ready. We are running the S/SS combo Saturday morning at Texas Motorplex and the no box bracket race Saturday night.
Some appearance details remain but they will not affect performance. |

Good luck on your shakedown outing, Larry. Many of us have enjoyed following along on this build,, even the corny Christmas song countdown was amusing. Hope the new car bugs are few, and the new car rewards are plenty. Make sure to have a video camera nearby. Take care.

There used to be a KILLER BBQ trailer next to a beer store right
down the road from the track. Best back door stuff that I've had. And the beer was cheap and ice cold. Have a great weekend and thanks for the ride on your build. Bob |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Our Super 10 outing today at the Texas Motorplex was a complete success!
The truck performed as we planned, like Bob Frey said, "straight down broadway" However, the Texas heat was brutal, *100 - temp *3900 DA *of course, very hot track At 3275 pounds it ran 10.48 on the first full pass, this is very good given the conditions. The one problem we encountered is the truck is 90 pounds lighter than we expected. I had already entered the race as a "C" truck so I could not move up a class. In addition, we had no reasonable/safe way to add 90 pounds within the time constraints. So, in order to not create a problem I withdrew from the SS race and ran the no-box bracket program. We got the first round win, lost second round and came home very happy. More updates and plans and details soon. I am too tired to continue just now. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Clean runs and no parts breakage...sounds like success to me. Congrats! :)

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Hand,
The Super 10 is an excellent package. From the very first move under power I was aware of the package being just my style. The truck fits me to a T, easy to drive, very smooth feel. |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
After a successful first outing, what now? First, a review of the facts;
*Friday night at Texas Motorplex the tech inspection took some time because I have the only SS GT S-10 with 300/327/293 in D 4. *Both the D 4 lead tech inspector and the D 4 director spent extra time crunching numbers to triple check what class the Super 10 fits. *Bottom line, it is a natural "A" but it is not possible for it to be that light. So, we will run "B" *At this time, at 3275 pounds with driver it is 170 pounds heavier than the minimum. *The "B" index is 10.85 *The truck ran 10.48 being 170 pounds heavy in 100 + temp with 4000 foot air. *I think it is reasonable to predict under better conditions and 170 pounds lighter it will qualify well in "B" I think it will eventually be a .65 under - .75 under package. *D 4 next scheduled Lucas race is September at Thunder Road near Shreveport La. So, we have about 7 weeks to prepare. My plan just now is do some low cost minor weight removal items. In addition, go back over everything to detail, clean, sort things that were skipped in order to make the first race. At Thunder Road we will most likely be about 120 pounds heavy but I am OK with that. Now, let me explain, I really like this truck :) It is a great package and we expect plenty of win lights. I can already tell the 327 likes RPM. Everything we did Saturday to spin it up improved the ET. It does sing a sweet song. Please excuse the typos, I have pushed myself this last month to have the truck ready. With the help of key team members we made it and ran well without problems. That plus two days in the 100 temps and I am tired. Wore myself to a nub that wore out the nub, whew! After a few days of rest I'll get back to y'all. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Some "Thank You" acknowledgements are in order:
* My Son Jeff Woodfin. Jeff is also an experienced racer and a valuable part of Team Woodfin. With each team member I rely on them in different ways. With Jeff, since he has considerable time and experience drag racing he understands the needs of a driver. Just to see him standing near with air gauge in hand has a calming effect. All I have to do is raise my hand and he is there to see what I need. Jeff is also an experience and gifted athlete. He is my coach, adviser and trusted partner. * Monte Pannell, Monte completes the core threesome when at the track. Between Jeff, Monte and myself the have the experience, strength, stamina to get the job done. Monte and Jeff are my physical strength that has gradually faded from the old man. They load, unload, setup, see after all the details. Their help is priceless. In addition, between the three we have excellent problem solving skills. Also, Monte is an experience fabricator. The Super 10 could not have been completed in 10 months without him. * My mental coach, Dr. Ron. I do not know how he does what he does, you know. We take a leisurely drive, have a late supper, and he tunes me up yet I am hardly aware of what he is doing. After I make a run I can reflect back and understand his influence. He gives me focus and tunnel vision at the tree in addition to blocking out distractions. *My two trusted mechanics, Ken Freeman and Ricky Gramling. Ken and Ricky each add talents and experience at the shop. Ken says, "we are drag racers, we only work on cars to support our drag racing" [and there is a piece of truth to that saying] Ken is a good wiring, plumbing, and detail man in addition to overall good mechanic. valuable skills for a race car building team. Ricky did much of the welding. He has the patients to do close fit up work. He did the cage and much of the other fabrication and welding for the Super 10. Ken and Ricky are two more reason we were able to go from a core truck to at the track racing in 10 months. I have more Thank You notes, stand by |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Continuing the Thank You acknowledgments:
*Gary Hettler - I bought heads and intake from Gary and with the very first phone call he was a wealth of information. A very nice, experienced man who goes beyond helpful with his customers. I followed his advice and the results prove he knows his SBC combinations. Thanks Gary, I appreciate you. * Phillip Vickous at Quick Fuel - As part of Gary Hettler's advice I called Phillip about the NHRA accepted replacement carb for the 327/300 combo. Quick Fuel VS 585 race carb. It is perfect, out of the box, untouched. In addition, I bought Quick Fuel 175 pump and matching regulator. The fuel pressure is rock steady and only needed to be checked, not changed. *Chris Padgitt at Comp Cams - I have been a customer of Comp and Chris for many years. Chris is my go to guy for cams. *Rick Sisk Performance Machine Shop - Rick and I have a 40 year relationship. His machine work is top shelf and so it his knowledge. He is a key part of my engine building work. *Mile High Crankshafts - Good folks going a good job, family operation. I was struggling with finding a 327 small journal core and of all things, he found one in his home town of Denver. He did a full SS race prep at very reasonable cost and the dimensions were dead on the tenth. *Charlie Plott at ATI - Another recommendation by Gary Hettler and of course, spot on. Converter, damper, flexplate all perform as expected. *Randy Mans with Quick Shocks - After a number of calls to several popular shock builders I was frustrated. I was hearing, "those S-10's are a problem, poor weight distribution, we do not build a shock for them" [so to speak] Then at the recommendation of some on this board I called Randy. "yes, I have done some of those and have a program for that application" Again, spot on and as expected. Thanks Randy. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Two more for now:
*REBCO Machine - using Bill Miller forgings REBCO built a quality piston that was exactly on spec. Valve notches machined as ordered, valve to piston clearance as requested. beautiful work. *Total Seal Rings - Keith sent the exact ring package as ordered. I honed the block and installed the rings per his recommendation. At start up the engine gave one puff of smoke from the assemble oil and dried right up. Engine is oil tight, breathers are dry. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
This will complete the Thank You notices [well, as least for now]
*Todd Bevis - I meet Todd when he worked part time after high school for Gary Harwood. Todd is an experienced builder, welder and suspension expert. I am fortunate to have him as a friend and contact. The Super 10 four link setup is at his suggestion. Thanks Todd |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Larry and team,
Truck looks great! The pictures were only a tease to getting to see the real thing. The attention to detail shows everywhere. Glad we got to talk a little, and glad the truck worked well. Always nice to get a win light on the first pass with a new project... sure everyone was happy for you, except maybe Max... LOL He will get over it. See you soon. Ken Stock 412 |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Ken, Thanks, I also enjoyed the visit. Good things are coming with the Super 10 :)

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Larry - I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I have truly enjoyed following the story of the creation of the Super 10 through this thread. Please do not stop now! Let this continue to be a journal of the next phase in the history of this neat race car.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Dwight,
We have only begun the journey! When I began this buildup post I had no idea the interest and following it would create. I have completely enjoyed the sharing. Being so public and so visible has worked out to be a good thing. Y'all stand by, I am just resting few days. Our next round of post will begin the process of gradual weight removal as we move the truck into a competitive position in GT/T"B" The next race outing will be the Lucas D 4 race at Thunder Road near Shreveport LA.
