Pontiacs won 3 classes at the '69 Winter Nats. Lindy Lindholm won I/SA, in a '58. Don't know how many different Pontiacs he raced. I suppose he'd still be racing one, if it hadn't been stolen. :(

Pontiacs won a couple of classes at the '70 Winter Nats. A Pontiac also held the K/SA nat record at the time.

Think I've mentioned this here before. But, I wanna bring it up again.
In 1973, at my home track, Stock class cars could not run soft compound slicks or cheater slicks. They had to be the hard compound full tread street tires. That's what the NHRA rule book said. "In the 1973 NHRA rule book it states that cars in stock class are required to use street tires with full tread pattern. Any tire wheel combination may be used if it will fit into the original wheel well opening. Tires must not be altered from the tire manufacturer's original design or pattern. "CHEATER SLICKS' WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. " https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...5-jpg.1153558/ But, for 1974, we could run a new DOT cheater slick. It had 2 small grooves. Below are pics of M&H tires, that are still sold today. The tread pattern looks exactly as I remember, on those tires we ran in '74. Anybody have a 1974 NHRA rulebook, from which you could copy & paste the tire rules, for Stock Elim ? So, were any of you guys running Stock Elim in '74, even if only at your local track ? If so, did you run any of these tires, or know of others who did ? I've read that NHRA actually made these tires legal, towards the end of the '73 season, just in time for the US Nats. After thinking this over, I remember that Truman Fields won the US Nats that year, in his '68 Bird. In the final, he & his opponent both set new nat records. I think Truman turned a 12.06. So, now I'm wondering if both cars were using those DOT cheater slicks then. Anyone here know, for sure ? On my computer files image, I can see wrinkles in Truman's RR tire. That means the tire was a wrinkle wall drag tire. That tells me that he was running those DOT Cheater slicks. Sorry I don't have a way to produce a clear larger image. The last pic is of the tire on the Al Vanis, '74 Ventura, US Nats winner. Again, the pic is not clear, but appears to show wrinkles, even tho the car was sitting still in that pic. So, I assume he was also running the M&H DOT cheater slicks. 9"slicks were legal in '75. Does anybody here have more info on those DOT Cheater slicks which NHRA allowed in '74, & possibly the end of the '73 season ? |

Here's 3 more Pontiac wagons I found.
The caption under the last pic says that car swept Stock Elim. I assume that was at the Winter Nats. Also mentions the year 1967. The drivers name was Graham Douglas. So, do any of you guys have 1967 Winter Nats results, showing the Stock winner's name ? A couple of online sources does show that car as the Jr. Stock winner. https://www.revolvy.com/page/1967-NHRA-Winternationals https://www.wikiwand.com/en/NHRA_Winternationals NHRA Junior Stock One source for this info is the Doug Boyce book: Junior Stock, which came out in 2012. I'd love to have a copy. But I'm not paying $55 for one. https://www.amazon.com/Junior-Stock-.../dp/1934709913 Anybody here have a copy, you'd sell, real cheap, or would agree to look up race results in ? |

Got a few more Tons-a-Fun pics. As many here know, Gary & Charlene Wood ran at least 2 different wagons. One had a regular Lemans front. The other had the GTO type front, which I think was called the T-41 option.
They ran both the round port & D-port 455 engines. The 7th pic shows one of 'em before the Tons-a-Fun lettering was added. The last pic shows one of 'em painted black, which I assume was after Gary sold it. Maybe if I've provided any bad info, Charlene will chime in & correct it. I loved these wagons ! |

(1) Another win for the E/SA '63 Cat. (2) The Swiss Cheese frame, of a resto in progress. (3) Don Himes, '77 GP. (4) Big Pontiac heads a long line of Stockers, that appear to be parked in front of the grandstands, just so fans could get a closer look. I find that very interesting. Nowadays, most fans could care less about Stockers. But it wasn't always that way. (5) Another S/SA win for Carol Cox. (6) Ken Shawver '71 E/SA Lemans. (7) Kyle Riley, "Who's Next" '77 Lemans. [8) Kyle again. Assume it's the same car with different paint. (9) Tin Tiger 2, 1967 GTO. |

My '69 GTO looked like this, less the Judge wing, stripes & emblems. Many non-Pontiac guys probably still think all '69 Judges were orange. When they 1st came out, that was the only color available. This was the case, when I ordered mine in early '69. I wanted a Judge. But I told the salesman I wasn't about to drive around in an orange car. :) (7) 2-car rig hauling the Knafel Pontiac '66 GTO's. Don't know if it set the nat record, or just ran a pass equal to the nat record, that someone else held. (5) I think this is an all-Pontiac round, tween the Garber Pontiac 2nd gen Bird & a '69 GTO. If I'm wrong about the GTO, someone correct me. (6) Burgundy D/S Truman Fields '68 Bird. He ran 'em with several different paint jobs, and in several different classes. (7) Green BPS. I assume this was run in B-Pure Stock. [8) Here it is in C/S, with a multi-colored paint job. I just ASSUME all these are the same car. I suppose only he, & a few others, such as Todd Hoven, actually know, for sure. (9) The last pic is from a few years earlier. Just assume this was the original HT, before it was sold to Roy & Mike McKinney. |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Stockers
After searching thru LOTS of pages in the Nostalgia Stock/SS section, I must say again how much damage Photobucket, & other pic hosting sites used for most of the pics in that section, have done to completely ruin entire pages of threads.
It sorta reminds me of walkin thru a former nice city or community, which has been totally destroyed by bombing, or some type of natural disaster. :( I mean, many of the posts contain comments about the pics that WERE in a previous post, but are no longer visible. It makes many of the comments completely useless, since you don't know what was in the pic referred to. I ASSUME that a VERY small number of those now defunct pics were of Pontiacs, which I could have used. It just makes the search that much longer & less fun. MUCH of the time I've spent searching that section has been totally useless, & not much fun. I really enjoy it when I can search thru a thread & am able to find just one or 2 Pontiac pics I didn't have. I suppose it's sorta like panning for gold. They only found a real nugget on rare occasions. But, at least they could look & tell what was NOT gold. On most of those pages, I can't see any cars of any brand. I assume others besides me have had this unpleasant experience, with the old threads. As they say, "rant over", at least for now. |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Stockers
Tom Kasch posted lots of pics & lists in the Nostalgia Stock/SS section. I may have already posted some of the lists. But, I'm not gonna comb back thru the entire thread to see.
This 1st list is of nat records in '82. Jack Matyas had the low ET record in O/SA, with his '74 Ventura. Larry Maxwell had the mph record, with his '74 GTO. http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...48&postcount=1 In '83, Kevin Thomas held the low ET record in N/S, in a '74 Lemans. Only '74 stick Lemans Stocker I remember reading about. http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...57&postcount=2 |

Here's a change of pace. It's a 1973 Pontiac 4-door heavyweight. These are the only pics I've ever seen of this car.
It was named the "Tijuana Taxi". It ran T/SA. Had Vaughn / Marvosh on the front doors. Driven by Dave Marvosh. Don't know what engine that would have been. But, it won a race at Columbus, with a 16.56 @ 70.69 mph. Also was featured in a Motor Wheel ad. With a magnifying glass, I think I can read "National Record Holder 1974", on the roof. Not sure. Anybody have more info/pics for this car ? You'll notice For Sale signs on it. Unless I have my stories mixed up, I think Dave Katt borrowed the car & won class at the US Nats. Someone correct me, if that's wrong. |

Names & paint jobs on drag cars have always been interesting, to me.
Here's a 007 Pontiac. Wonder how many cars used that name, back when the James Bond movies 1st got popular ? https://www.pocket-lint.com/tv/news/...ogical-release I've mentioned the Acre Maker cars, which the Moore family raced. I think the Dad, Roland Moore, was driving the big car when the Indy pic was taken. Then we have a big Pontiac with a red/white, candy-stripe top. And, of course, a tiger stripe. Assume it was orange. |

Just listened to the podcast interview of Rock & Ginny Running.
It was great ! I give it a 10. Rock mentioned several Pontiacs he had. For those who don't know, his 1st really competitive dedicated Stocker, was a '74 GTO. He only ran it in '74, then sold it to Dave Pruden. He then bought a '71 T-37, which he raced from '75 - '82. Won his 1st nat event, in the T-37, at the Spring Nats in Columbus, in '81. Sold it to Ken Shawver. Then Danny Ashley had it. Has changed hands several times. I think Don Turk has it now. All Rock's cars were named "Super Sleeper". Said one of his kids came up with the name, back when he had a big, heavy, slow, Pontiac, which I think was a '66 Cat. Ginny said she never missed a race, & always kept records of what Rock did each pass, as well as what his competition did. Rock credits Ginny & her detailed records with much of his racing success. |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Stockers
Panning thru the Nostalgia section & found this nugget.
I suppose everybody here besides me already knew where to find this info. It's a list of NHRA Nat event results from 1955 thru 2000. Of course, the 1998 & later results are listed on DRC. But, a quick scan thru some of the years revealed some Pontiac powered wins & RU's I was not aware of, as far as I know. Now I'm not familiar with every driver name that ran a Pontiac powered car in all those races. So, there could be some Pontiacs on some of these lists I miss. Also, as we all know, LOTS of guys have raced different brands of cars, during their driving career. So, for some of you guys who were there back when a particular race was run, I need ya'll to point out any Pontiac powered car I might miss, AND any name I list as having been driving a Pontiac, who was actually driving some other brand, at that race. http://www.nhra.net/50th/resultslist.html I'll post this on the Pontiac SS thread, then start going up thru the years & listing all Pontiac wins & RU's I find, listing the Stock cars on this thread & the SS cars on the SS thread. |

I assume it was an all-Pontiac final, between 2 of the Bill Knafel Tin Indian GTO'S. If this is not correct, somebody please post the correct info. http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1966 Bill Abraham was also RU @ the World Finals that year, in another all-Pontiac final, against Jay Hamilton's '58 Pontiac.
