And they were made obsolete overnight by 1966 when Dyno Don and Fast Eddie appeared on the scene with their Logghe-built Mercury Comet fliptop funnycars.

Thanks for the information.

I also talked to Billy and he's looking for photos of when he worked on the car.

Anybody from Allentown racing back in the early 70's?

Over the years I have always wondered what happened to many of these original cars as they appeared in 1965. Shirley Shahan's 65' Belvedere was one that always stood out. Going to a former racers home to purchase some parts there was some conversation about old race cars. One of the cars that he talked about was the Drag On Lady Plymouth and how he watched it turned over to a local junk yard about 5 miles from my home to be scrapped after a crash.

I've been searching for material and speaking with others to confirm this story. I have had a brief conversation with Shirley and one pit crew member about the car. My information trail ends prior to 1976 and shows what I believe to be this car and it's end. Does anyone here have any information about this car and where it may be.

That car with Fast Ed was owned by Ed Ecenrode. He was a Chrysler service rep. He is retired. Don't know who owned before Fast Eddie talked to him at Eldora Raceway reunion this past summer.

J Oliverio is right, at the time of these pictures this car was owned by Eddie Eckenrode from the Pittsburgh area. I think the pictures were taken at PID. This car was Butch Leals original 65 A990 that he ran back in 65. (not the Butler Built car that Leal ran in the mid 70's). I think the car is in NJ now.

The Butler built car was run by Bill Diehl at Keystone Raceway Park back in the day and was once monikered "Steel City Hemi".

Eddie did show me years ago that the rear wheel openings were patched back in stock. It didn't look to be radically altered like the AF/X were.

I often wondered whose car Billy had. I never put two and two together even after seeing the Butler bars. I always thought it was a Barnett built car. Billy ran a few different paint jobs on that car as well.

Bob,

Just to put a time line on it, did Diehl have the Butler built car before or after Bagwell?

We watched Bill race in the mid and late 70s,rumor was it was one of Steve Bagwells cars.It did have a variety of paint schemes. It was definately a Butler built chassis.

Now that's 'funny.' Just joshing...it's sad, really. Why not start with a six-cylinder or car from the wrecking yard that was written off by the insurance company (but still fixable) if you're going to butcher it? I know hindsight is 20/20 but still, these racers had to know that these were factory special, low (as in very low) production models.

Yep. From what I remember reading in a mid-1970s issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine once upon a time many moons ago, someone by the name of Skeeter Hernandez (from Maryland) owned Leal's ex-SS/B racer (for a while) then it found its way into Steve Bagwell's racing stable.

My 69-1/2 road runner isn't that rare, and isn't that cut up, but I talked to Arlen Vanke about it since the mods were done in his shop and he said it was just the way it was. Nobody thought twice about it, they just wanted to race.

One has to consider that the 11 factory built hardtop A F/X cars became the hottest money making tool for a touring drag racer in '65. The fastest way for an independent racer looking to capitalize on the new funny car craze was to buy an A-990 sedan and move the wheelbase forward. Time was of the essence since everyone was scrambling to get a match race funny up and running. None of these cars were ever designed to last more than one season so it's amazing how many of them are still accounted for.

Yes, I know, but I still stick to my original argument: why butcher (not merely modify) a LOW production factory S/S car? I surely wouldn't have done it, especially if I parted with my hard-earned bucks to buy the car in first place, 20/20 hindsight notwithstanding, and which answers a question that I didn't ask (i.e., cars were obtained with little or no money out of the pockets of respective racers responsible for such automotive sacrilege). The fact that many of them are still accounted for proves that sanity did prevail at least in some (or more) cases.

Re: A990 Super Stockers

We must also recall that for every factory backed altered wheelbase hardtop car modified at Amblewagon, 1 genuine A-990 sedan was sacrificed for drivetrain and interior parts. Independent racers were simply following what the Chrysler Corporation had already done. This was the fastest and most economical way to obtain the drivetrain required for a match racer.
