Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
It is a great feeling to make your first outing without drama. You guys did a very good job. RJ and I built our CJ car from scratch and can share the same since of accomplishment. Our car fired off the first time and made it down the track the first time. Hope to see you at the races soon.

The Super 10 will be sporting a new set of M/T radials for the D 4 Lucas race Sept 18 - 20
Also, last week during the first outing at Texas Motorplex my Son Jeff said, "the tailgate needs help" [or something like that] I think decals help any tailgate :) |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
During our first outing we learned several good pieces of information.
First; we have a very good basic package. Runs straight, handles smoothly, straight down Broadway from the very first pass. Everything about the package performed as expected and planned. Second; the Super 10 is about 165 pounds too heavy. Right away we began brain storming about weight removal ideas. At this time we plan to remove about 80 - 90 pounds before the next D 4 Lucas Race. Then over time, will whittle away more. For now, I am OK with it being about 80 pounds or so overweight. The "B" index is 10.85 and we expect it to run easy 10.30 - 10.25 so I am good with that. In addition, to my knowledge, there is not another GT/TB truck in D 4 so no problem with heads up runs. Third; we learned the 327 combination likes RPM. Each time we let it have it's head it picked up. With good air and good track it will perform very well :) Stand by for more updates and weight removal news. |

I have backed off, rested and now it's time to update.
With the first launch out of the trailer the Super 10 had a stumble at the hit, that Friday night we had three runs and as we got more aggressive with the leave the stumble got worse. In my overnight pondering I expected fuel was sloshing from the vent and flooding the engine. Saturday morning before running I removed the front float bowl and sure nuff, no vent baffle installed. Our temporary fix was the old rubber hose between the vent tubes and that cured the stumble and let us make the day. The better fix, Quick Fuel sells a trick vent baffle that sits in the metering block and is captured by the bowl. Later will show photos of the BLP closed top, open on sides vent tubes. |

Thanks goes out to Dick Ullrich [aks FED387] for a factory air filter base that works with the side hung float bowl.
Dick sent a full service package with attaching hardware and instructions. I like it when racers help racers. |

Question - how do you remove about 60 pounds from a Super 10?
Answer - remove factory seats and console and replace them with aluminum race seats. In this photo the seat looks oversize but with the black cover installed it looks good and fits good. It is actually smaller than the factory seat. A slightly smaller seat of the same style goes on the other side. The tall seat sides and bright finish make it look larger to the camera. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
An accounting of the weight removal project
*seats account for 60 pounds *changing the rear bumper to a roll pan removed 35 pounds *work on both doors amounted to 16 pounds total removed About the Mark Williams front brakes. I am still pondering/questioning if I made the correct decision in that department. My reason for changing from factory brakes to aftermarket brakes was to save weight. The factory brakes are completely able to safely stop the truck, no issue at all with safe brake performance. My "reservation" about my decision to install Mark Williams is not one of quality but I question the weight savings. I will know the answer soon when I remove the factory brakes and weigh all the hardware. The Williams set I bought is the above 3000 pounds system with four piston calipers, heavy duty hubs and heavy duty rotors. I will be surprised if there is five - six pounds difference between the two. I am also considering returning the set I have now in exchange for the next lighter system. At this time I think the cost is too much for such a small gain. What ever the outcome about the brakes the truck is at least 120 or so pounds lighter. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
How much did this project cost ?
|
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Jake,
I have not considered the cost but for purposes of the build information I will give thought to your question and get back to you. Until then, my age is 68 and I have built MANY drag race cars. My focus is always on what the buildup needs to be competitive and what it will take to perform in the expected ET range. When selecting parts I do consider cost balanced with service life and past experience. And part of my thought process, building and driving drag race car is my hobby and passion. It is my equivalent of other folks hunting, fishing, golfing, model air planes etc. I have found nothing that that interest me more nor gives me more pleasure. If I had saved all the money I have spent on drag race cars I would be a wealthy man. However, for me, that would be a boring way to live. I consider the lessons learned, races won, memories made, priceless. Finally, the associations. Working with family and friends, the respectful relationships cultivated, all part of a very satisfying package. |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Jake,
about $24,000.00 to-date. NOTES: *I did not paint the truck. It has the original paint and looks good from 10 feet or at night. *Everything was done in house with the follow few exceptions; *Heads and intake bought from Gary Hettler *Block machine work by Rick Sisk Performance Machine *Bill Miller piston forgings worked by REBCO to Gary Hettler specs. *Mile High did the super stock crank prep *Headers by Vic Custer with East Texas Race Cars. Also, understand I had some of the parts on-hand from other projects. In addition, I have wholesale pricing connections for most of the new parts. It was a combined effort of a number of key people, all which provided time and talents to make it happen. I am blessed and grateful and indebted to all who contributed. You know the talent group is solid when the truck goes straight down Broadway out of the box and performs as expected. Our next race is Lucas D 4 September 18 - 20 near Shreveport La. Stay tuned. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Mr. Drag, great build, very informative.I believe both front seats have to be identical,.You might want to contact your DD....M.J.
|
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
I agree with Derby City. Drivers and passengers seats must be identical in appearance. General 6.2
If it's not in GT/Truck you have to look up to SS/GT and then to SS until you find a listing for something. I believe you have to keep the stock bumper unless trucks ship without them. OEM bumpers are mentioned in SS but not in GT or GTT. They are all under the same general heading right down to the super modified "bubble cars". Dale |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Larry - It sounds like you have Mark Williams version of Pro Street brakes...they are a good bit heavier than the 3000# and under parts. II'm headed in the opposite direction with my Aerospace front brakes. I have the same kit I used on the Camaro and Mustang, but will be exchanging some of the parts for their Pro Street version for use on the El Camino which will be street driven.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Note: department of corrections in ref to Mark Williams brake system weight.
The MW system will be about 12 pounds per wheel lighter :) And some other comments, *both seats will be the same size *rear bumper removal and replacing with a rear valance panel is common with the truck builds. I suppose it grandfathers back to when earlier trucks came from the factory without a rear bumper and dealer would install what ever type the customer wanted. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Double check on the seats. I have been told by a D6 tech that they have to be "identical", not just the same size.
Dale |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
in addition to being the same size, they are identical. Same vendor, same part number, same dimensions. :)

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Larry,
I finally found the QF ssr 585 vs listed as a legal replacement for the carb on my build (thanks QF - 24 replacement numbers listed/ No Thanks NHRA - 1 replacement number listed). Is it worth the money over a Holley 4150/600 cfm ? Dale |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Dale,
the Quick Fuel folks are polite and helpful and I have established a relationship with them. The products perform as expected and are of good quality. And yes, I think the SS585VS is a good choice. It is a current [new] design as compared to older carb options. Quick Fuel added a fuel metering curve specific to my combination and it ran excellent right out of the box. I did take the bowls off before running it to verify the jets were per the flow sheet. [and they were] The one thing I overlooked, it did not have the vent baffles installed. At the track I had a stumble at launch and quickly expected fuel was slashing out the front vent and momentary flooding the engine. The old rubber fuel hose looped between the vent tubes saved the day and it ran perfect. Back at home I installed vent baffles and taller vent tubes for the next race. Look back about 1 or 2 pages and you will see the mods. Next time I talk with QF I will tell them this story and suggest an upgrade that would include the baffle and taller tubes. |

During the course of this build a number of folks have complemented me on doing a neat, quality job. I appreciate those complements and I do strive to perform in that way.
However, I am at heart an East Texas blue collar mechanic and every now and then I must embrace that heritage. Case in point, with the removal of the factory seats and installing of aluminum race seats I was careful to duplicate the factory seating position because it fit me just right. Once installed, the seating felt good and steering wheel spacing was good. Yet, the gas pedal feel was not just right. Some work with a table saw and belt sander cured the pedal issue :) |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
The spacing between your brake and gas pedals seems huge compared to my Mustang. Is that stock? My truck's a stick so I don't have a reference point. Wife drives a - gasp - Subaru...
Love the full bumper. Dale |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Dale,
You may recall in earlier post I talked about driver comfort. The brake pedal position is part of the comfort. The pedal has been reformed to a more natural left foot position. It is in about the same position as the clutch pedal would be. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
We are whittling away at our get ready list for next week's Lucas D 4 race at Thunder Road Raceway near Shreveport LA.
Also, we have a new addition to our support equipment. I found a 30' class A motor home with low miles and in overall good condition. It needs some minor repairs and the usual maintenance items. The critical things will be completed in time for next weeks outing. The extra room and comfort is a welcome upgrade from our cramped living quarters goose neck. |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Team Woodfin had a good outing at the Thunder Road D 4 Lucas race.
We ran .420 under first round which I think with limited data and limited runs is a good number. We have a total of 9 runs on the truck including todays final. Due to our work schedules we only got one run Friday. The first round contest was between me and Ed Wright. It was a good tight race, double break out, with me going under more than Ed. Photos and other updates soon. |

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
The Super 10, winding down the series.
Since the heading of this section is " under construction" the Super 10 no longer fits the subject matter. On the first page about a year ago I stated the project posting would go all the way to racing super stock at a Lucas event. That goal was accomplished Sept 19 & 20 at Thunder Road Raceway near Shreveport La. It was a team effort that allowed the accomplishment and I am personally grateful for the excellent help. If you have question about any section of the build I will answer your questions. Other than that, I do not plan to continue the series with the exception of an occasional update. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Thanks Larry,it has been a well documented thread.I have really enjoyed following the build as well as the opportunity to help any way that I could. As you know I am already looking forward to the next build. Monte

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
What happened Larry?
There was a ton of smoke, hope it didn't eat a motor. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Colby,
It is sad news for Team Woodfin and the Super 10 engine. Pulling the valve cover and a quick check showed the engine broke #3 intake valve. We licked our wounds, loaded up and towed home to Kilgore. I do not know the extent of the damage now. I will tear down and see what can be salvaged then formulate a new plan. I like the Super 10 package and think it is a good match for me. Considering what could be broken and considering what the replacement parts will cost I may change engine combinations. Too soon to tell just now but if the 327 parts have major damage I may change to the 1970 Camaro 350/360 engine factored @ 330 with Edelbrock heads [#60477 head] Doing so would take 40 or so pounds off the front and the truck would like that. |
