It was a constant struggle to gain the advantage or pick up a few bucks winning or match racing. The sport was evolving so quickly in the 60s and 70s and was a popular spectater sport to watch. We didn't have the techonolgy that is available in later years and what we have now.We didn't have a crystal ball but have memories of the beginning of an era that we may never experience again. Though it is too costly for most today, the yesterdays were priceless. |

On a different note, the thing I like most about Nostalgia racing today is that it created a use for a lot of the obsolete stuff floating around. A lot of it is very serviceable, but has been technologically (?) passed by for class racing, and those of a more serious bent. I know that is what I do....my dear friend Bob George told me I'm a dinosaur....he's right. But, I'm still having some fun, I've finally realized that this isn't a money making deal. |

Re: A990 Super Stockers
My grandfather used to volunteer his time watching over the local garbage dump since he liked shooting the breeze with the farmers and townspeople who'd dump their stuff there. One day when I was a boy, the entire aluminum front end from this very car was thrown into the aluminum pile there. Steve Link bracket raced the car at Great Lakes Dragway back in the 70s, and unfortunately stuffed the front end into the guard rail. The aluminum bodywork was badly wrinkled, but repairable by todays standards. But why go through all of that trouble when new steel panels could still be had at the local Chrysler dealership which his family just happened to own?

Re: A990 Super Stockers
This photo dates to late 1969. We know this because this is the ’65 Plymouth Super Stocker that Arlen Vanke built with one purpose in mind—to smoke the SS/C record, where Bill Jenkins and the Chevy guys were enjoying a cushioned index going toward the 1969 World Finals in Dallas. Since the index was based on the current class record, Akron Arlen put this car together quickly—with some factory help, took it to the last divisional race of the year at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio, and reset the record in a Sunday evening final-round charge (after missing a chance during the record runs on Saturday). He hammered the number so hard that the ZL1 cars could not even qualify at Dallas the next month. He is seen here at St. Thomas, Ontario, soon after.

Re: A990 Super Stockers
Anyone have any idea what race track this is? Also anybody remember Steve Maurasic or Super Commando? Not sure yet but think this is the 5&50 sometime in late 60's early 70's.
I'm trying to track history of the 65 5&50 between Jack Werst and when Don West(bechtelsville, pa) got it. Ken Montgomery got it from Don. http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/t...pslwsnktwq.jpg Thanks!!! |
Re: A990 Super Stockers
Here's a another picture I believe is earlier. Anyone have a idea on the dragstrip or who Johnny White was?

Re: A990 Super Stockers
Too funny Daryl!!!! Noah is now looking at old pics of cars I had or Toli and asking are they faster than Doc Halladays Telstar or Steve Johnson's Pro Stock Bike or Daryl's Dart. I might have to collect some old Top Fueler now just so I can tell him it's the fastest of them all. This would be Noah's choice I bet.
Having fun, Alex http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/t...pspdlxeofy.jpg |

There was a Johnny White that drove the Houston Hustler funny cars in the 1970s. Maybe that was the same guy?

Picture from Facebook: Reported to be a garage built A990 clone "back in the day" but still a cool car with a lot of history.

Re: A990 Super Stockers
The Cheshier car has been discussed here before. That is the car Greg Charney won Indy with in 1971. It was a real W051 car, not a clone. Ron Cheshier also owned Bill Gibbs' red/yellow/white Coronet as well.

Re: A990 Super Stockers
Old thread, new question.
In the current 1964-65 NHRA class. guides, they list the 426/425hp-8v race hemi. I deduce that this was factored to about 500-505hp so it put the cars into S/S, below the 7.00 weight break. But they also list a 426/400hp-4v race hemi. I wondered why (besides NASCAR), but if factored the same way, say up to 480hp or so, that would put the 4bbl hemi cars right around W/P=7.08 so they could run in A/S for 1965. I don't even know if the 426/400-4v race hemi existed in NHRA in 1965, but if it did, was it really factored that way, could those car run in A/S=7.00, and why is there no evidence of that happening? Leads me to believe NHRA did not recognize the 426/400-4v, whether factored or not? |
Re: A990 Super Stockers
