Re: Musical Tastes
"You're No Good" is a song written by Clint Ballard, Jr., first performed by Dee Dee Warwick for Jubilee Records in 1963 with production by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It has since been covered by many artists, including charting versions by Betty Everett in 1963, The Swinging Blue Jeans in 1964, and Linda Ronstadt in 1975, whose version was a number 1 hit in the United States.

"The spirit it was freedom and justice
And its keepers seemed generous and kind Its leaders were supposed to serve the country But now they won't pay it no mind 'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy Now their vote is a meaningless joke They babble about law and order But it's all just an echo of what they've been told" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk3sURDS4IA |

Re: Musical Tastes
I guess you could call this a cover...
In 1967, the Vanilla Fudge took a pop hit from the Supremes and Holland, Dozier ,and Holland, and did a psychedelic version, which came to be their trademark style, and thus opening an entirely new era to the public. RIP, bassist Tim Bogert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCwzCQcjC0M |

Re: Musical Tastes
I don't know why... But I don't like the Moodys. Something about them I don't like. Can't put my finger on it. Kind of mellow, but we can see by my picks I sometimes like mellow. I'm sure Mark will tell me ..

Re: Musical Tastes
Mello... yet cerebral... vaguely psychedelic...

Some might know this, but the Moodys first hit it big with a cover of a Bessie Banks song..(Go Now !)..This was 1965 A bit later , Denny Laine (later of Wings) left the group. Justin Hayward stepped in , as lead guitarist, vocalist and chief songwriter. The Days of Future Past featured a symphony orchestra up front, and sold a whole bunch of copies. Lots of bands used symphonies, such as Procol Harum, The Beatles But the critics claimed the Moodys were not a R&R band. This is why, IMO, it took them so long to get into the R&R HOF. They were NOT known for scandals, arguments, and heavy booze and drug abuse... In other words, they didn't fit in. I think, if I was able to come back as someone else, it would be Justin Hayward! Multi -talented , classy guy.. I figure if I could sit down with my guitar, and all these great riffs and lyrics would just come to me, I wouldn't be in the garage, having a 25 year old car kick my ***. I might be at one of my houses at Cornwall by the Sea ;-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8RCFZDEwYg |
Re: Musical Tastes
Jeff, Sometimes I can't put my finger on it either..Not so with AC/DC, Led Zep
For me its the Doors, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen (to me he sings like he has a mouth full of dog do do).... there's several others. As I think of them I'll add them, Then there's other ones, no matter if they been played to death or not, every time I hear them I reach over and turn them up .. Sweet Home Alabama, Layla, Long Way to the Top, Carry On My Wayward Son,, and others that I will add as I recall |
Re: Musical Tastes
Some songs seem timeless to me... Midnight Rider (original version ABB) Listen to the Music. Doobies, Do you believe in Magic... Spoonful, Sunny Afternoon., Kinks

Speaking of timeless...this song is 54 years old, but it doesn't sound like it to me.
If today's musicians could write and play songs like this, they wouldn't suck ;-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25YxNSkLDB8 |

Re: Musical Tastes
I've been reading the posts from you guys for the past several months. They are interesting, but I haven't heard of a lot of the songs. I just figured it out. You guys are selecting all MALE groups.
I went back 4 pages before one of you had something by Linda Ronstadt. All of my favs include female singers. You guys, that only like guy groups must be ...... racist? No, that's not it... Anti-feminist? No, that's not it. Serious, no that's not it.....hummmm |

I have to go ago with Mark and Jeff on this issue of the Moody Blues. My tastes are music from 1966 to 1972. They were just different, it was just music to relax to, because you sure the heck couldn't dance to some of it. |
