Re: Trailer Winch
I hear ya, Daryl.... Climbing in and out of my car with a cage, in the trailer (it's hard enough when the car is in the lanes) is just too much for these old bones.......... ;-) Went with an electric tongue jack, last year. Much easier on the ol' back.....

Re: Trailer Winch
Jeff,
Does your trailer have a front cabinet? If so that is typically where they are mounted. That is where mine is mounted and the bottom of the cabinet has an opening for the cable. It is bolted through the floor with a 1/4" aluminum plate on the underside. The wireless remote is also a nice thing to have, I do not belive Superwinch makes them anymore, but Tommy Johnson Motorsports has one. Hope this helps Sean |

Re: Trailer Winch
On my open trailer I mounted the winch under the trailer, and cut an opening in the steel deck for the fairlead. It was great! A friend had his mounted that way in his enclosed, other than the tripping hazard, it was great. How long your trailer is will make a difference on placement as well. It does not take long to fill a trailer.

Re: Trailer Winch
It's 24'. I think I can build a mount underneath and put the fairlead in the floor. Minimal tripping hazard. I was concerned about the pulling capacity of the winch. Knowing it is pulling a rolling vehicle, I was thinking one of the bigger ATV winches might suffice. Now, I think I better spend a few more dollars and get a bigger one.
Thanks again for the advice! |
Re: Trailer Winch
Jeff, this is my old trailer and what you could see of the winch fairlead, and the remote. The steel deck is much thinner than the floor of your enclosed. As it probably has 3/4" to 1" plywood. The thickness of the floor may recess the fairlead even more. This would keep the tripping hazard down to just the hook when the car is not in the trailer.

Re: Trailer Winch
I have a 24' Pace which was built to my spec. Bought a 3500 lb Superwinch that has the control on the side so couldn't bolt it to the factory floor plate because it was too far forward and under the cabinets. Just bolted through the plywood floor and haven't ever had a problem. I'll take a couple pictures and post in a few days. For a straight line pull I'd advise at least a 3500 lb winch for your car.
