The inner bore of my aerospace pump grooved up bad when I was on alchohol....I had a machine shop bore it and put in a stainless sleeve which cured the problem....this was one of the early design pumps ....works great now....

After every day of racing when I put the car in the trailer I remove the vacuum hose from the pump inlet side and leave it off until the next time it comes out of the trailer. Then before I start the car I squart a little PB-50 in the inlet of the pump and put the hose back on. I also send my pump back to Moroso every winter and have them go through it. They always want to know if I ever use it much because it still looks new inside.
PB-50 is a general purpose lubricant made by PB Blaster. you can find it at most Home Depot and Lowes stores.

I am looking to put one of theses vacuum pumps on my Nova, does anyone have any pictures of how they mounted the pump and overflow tank on theirs cars? Just looking for some ideas and mounting options.

Re: Vacumm Pump

A defective vane would have come apart during initial factory testing. We test all new pumps at approximately 200% of a typical drag race duty cycle application, its one of the reasons we do it. If a vacuum pump vane does break its almost always due to something getting into the pump, other than liquid or air, that does not belong in there. The most common culprit we find is a piece of valve spring material. The foreign object breaks the first vane then these broken pieces break the remaining vanes. Its a domino effect. All vacuum pumps are vulnerable to this situation.
An appropriate filter between the engine and the pump would completely eliminate this possibility. You use an oil filter and air cleaner to protect your engine, why not do the same for your vacuum pump? If a needle bearing from a broken rocker arm locks up your oil pump is it the oil pumps fault? Certainly not!
Remember, you don't get filet mignon for the price of chicken. And if everyone bought strictly on price we would all be driving Yugos, and they would still be in business.

We put a Star pmp on Al Ackerman's F/D about three years ago........ I remember it working well and being worth about .12....... Hmmm.... wonder why we never put one on the L/AA when I was driving it...... go figure......

Anyway...... Star puts out a fine product and there is almost always a rep at the D1 races....... I'll probably have one on my car before the '09 season starts.......
