Whos camshaft are some of you guys using? what kind of rpms are the 305 good for? does it make since to use the tool lifters??

On the lifters there was no difference in my 283 other than i was scared to death one was going to shatter. I have shubecks

I really appreciate you racers that respond as i am running out of time to make div 2 opener. I have a ride but really want to get my wagon finished. I know finding 70 plus horsepower is a shot in the dark for a idiot like myself but i am gonna give it my best

You'd be surprised what a GREAT pair of 416 heads can do for you.
I had Shubeks on my ol 305 motor with no problems.
I had a Bullit cam, not sure of any specifics.
My motor had flat top pistons with the small cam.
You run a wagon, so do you have flat top pistons or other ???
PLUS, make sure you have a Very Good Carb. Very Important.

Dish piston, is that what u have ??

I do not know how fast you want to run or if your on a budget.

The BEST engine guy is Bub Whitaker from Md.
He Will Work With You.

Little costly but your car Will Fly......

I sold my carb 305 motor & went to an F.I. set up, if i didn't do that, Bub was doing
my next motor. Of course down the road i'm sure he will be freshening this one i have now.

If its in your budget I'd call Bruce Parsons and investigate getting him to do the heads/manifold. They are in Dayton (virtually downtown but still an easy drive for you). He can get you in the ball park for cylinder wall hone and a ring package to get a good seal. If you need to make do with your current heads then call the Comp Cams tech line and ask to speak with Tim, he can set you up with cam and lifters that will get the job done. Again, if you need to go with current heads you should get the spring specs and pressures before calling. If you need to make Orlando then obviously the latter course of action would be quicker. RPM=$$$ so you have to decide if you want to run comfortably under the index (even at Bristol) or want a 1.0 under car, in which case Bruce or another reputable builder like Bub needs to come into the picture.

10 years ago, my good friend and customer Jeff Stealy (Rest in Peace my friend) was doing Chevy 305's that were making 415-420 H.P. on the Dyno. And if you ever saw his own Camaro with the 305 in it, it flew!

I dont feel i need a engine bulder at this point. I have a good shop here local and i can go anytime and act like i know what i am doing.:D
The heads on this engine has been worked so I am not going to do much there just yet.
The cam is small and the cylinders need atleast 30 to clean them up. this engine had more compression in the oil pan than the hedders.:D
it also got stock rocker arms (dont know if rollers will help or not)

I will be happy to see a significant increase in horsepower. I enjoy bustin wrenches. My teenage boys enjoy it alot

Keep me posted on your results when it finally gets to the dyno or track.

I'm very curious.

Good Luck.
