Re: Nasty trans explosion!
I had to look. The flashpoint of petroleum ATF is only around 350F. I saw a fellow kill a T400 in a pulling truck. Looked almost as bad as this one. I see in multiple places people saying that the converter exploded/came apart. He may have had a fuel line cut, but I have no doubt that it's possible that was all ATF.

Re: Nasty trans explosion!
Wouldn't be surprised it was a flexplate ring gear came apart and severed the fuel line .
Saw a very similar explosion like this a few years ago caused by that . |
Re: Nasty trans explosion!
I was a front seat passenger in a '701/2 Z28 one night that peeled the ring gear off the flexplate at about 6,000 rpm in second gear. The ring gear sawed the right subframe almost in two, blew the rt front tire and cut the fuel, brake and trans cooler lines along with ventilating the rt. side of the block.
Don't know how big the fireball was from the outside. It was d@m^^ big from the inside of the car........ |
Re: Nasty trans explosion!
I've made over 5000 passes and have never "peeled the ring gear off the flexplate." Matter of fact I have never broken a weld on my flexplate, no surprise to me, I don't buy junk parts. Thanks ATI!
