Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
M68,
I'll give it the 'old college try'. Judy's car (1967 Belvedere I sedan post-car) was purchased in December 1966. It went through 'Fry Plymouth' out of Colorado It was as it is in the photo, a 1967 Belvedere I sedan (post-car), Street-Hemi, 4-speed. The R/O Belvedere II (hardtop) cars didn't get built until February. Though the car was not an R/O, it was a pretty much a 'delete everything' car. The car came through with a flat-hood, and at first was in A/Stock, then into SS/B with a flat-hood (non-R/O hood). Eventually a correct R/O hood scoop was added. It was somewhat of a Mopar Test Car (pre-cursor for the R/O program). It was factory-backed, so technically it was the only non-hardtop 1967 Hemi in partial R/O trim. 'Pappy Fry' PC |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
X-Tech,
Here's one, 1967 Winternationals, Sox & Martin ran in SS/B with a 67' GTX (Street Hemi) non R/O car with a flat hood. That car also was at Aquasco in April 1967. Again, it could have been a Belvedere II or Satellite car, but lettered with GTX on the rear quarter-panel. The hood is flat, and does not have the long/narrow faux-hood scoops (standard item on the 67' GTX). More S&M Toys, Paul |

Sounds plausible; thanks for explaining. Chrysler, I think, should've offered the RO & WO23 package in both hardtop and sedans. "Sox & Martin ran in SS/B with a 67' GTX (Street Hemi) non R/O car with a flat hood." Hmmm....I'll have to dig through my vintage magazine collection 'cause I don't recall ever seeing a pic of Ronnie's '67 car with a non-performance hood on it! M68 P.S. Yeah, "Pappy Fry"...that's one name you can't forget! |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
M68,
You'll see the 67' Sox & Martin Hemi (non-R/O car) on jerestahl photo's versus Jere Stahl. Aquasco April 1967. Jere is running his 67' R/O, and Sox & Martin's car is a Hemi, and lettered with GTX, but no hood scoop. 'The Boss' is lettered on the front fender. ???? I'm wondering, I bet they had the 440 GTX SS/E car, and a Street-Hemi Belvedere II SS/B car for early 1967, before the 67' R/O came into play in May. Paul |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Mike,
I''ll check that out. It seems correct. The 1967 Hemi Coronet that Dick Landy ran in 1967 was a Hemi Coronet R/T 4-speed that ran in SS/B. After the R/O and W/O cars were made legal by NHRA, he added the correct W/O hood scoop. Tha blue/green car with the white top and white interior was not a W/O car. I believe after the 67' season, and starting in 1968, the car was campaigned as a SS/DA car. PC |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Mike,
All Plymouth R/O and Dodge W/O 1967 (Super/Stock Package) cars came through white, with black interiors and bench seats. They did not go into production until late February 1967. If Sox & Martin and Dick Landy were running SS/B cars at the 1967 AHRA and NHRA Winternationals, than in all likely hood, Sox & Martin may have had a GTX Hemi 4-speed, and Dick Landy had an R/T Hemi 4-speed. No hood scoops or Vanke intakes on the GTX and/or R/T Street Hemi cars, at least not from the factory. As for the SS/E class, Sox & Martin did have a 67' 440 GTX, and Dick Landy did have a 67' 440 R/T that ran in B/SA. As for performance, the S & M, 440 GTX SS/E car hit 11.95's and Landy's, 440 R/T B/SA hit 12.35's. Both very good times fo January 1967. And yes, the Centolanza Bros. had a 67' 440 GTX in SS/EA, before the Hemi car. It ran 12.30's. PC |

Jerry,
Beautiful restoration. What is the story with those cars. An R/O with GTX badging on the quarter. And the early 67' picture at Aquasco, no hood scoop. Just how many ran through their shop????????? Really doesn't matter, they were all nice. Paul |

Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Many stories, mysteries and missing VIN tags.
Going through photos and race results. If Sox & Martin were at the 1967 Winternationals and running SS/B, what could they have been driving. Since the R/O cars weren't built until late February, and Buddy Martin said that he bought the R/O car in May 1967??? Could, at the 67' Winternationals the car been a Street-Hemi GTX with flat-hood, or maybe another Belvedere II with a Street-Hemi. I know the nice lettering of 'Plymouth GTX' looks good on the quarter. The lettering doesn't mean anything at all, anyway, just confuses everyone. I think they just wanted to get as many cars out there as possible, when the going was good. Also, being booked at two different tracks on the same day,,,,,,,,,lots of different drivers too. Went to one Sox & Martin event, two of their cars were there, but "Hey, your not Ronnie Sox! PC |

Eric Lindberg is the current owner of the Landy's 67 Corronet. He did a beautiful job with the restoration right down to the black electrical tape on the steering wheel. Does anyone know what the tape was for?

Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Matt,
Both Dick Landy and Sox & Martin each had 4 cars at the 68' Winternationals. I guess the factory-teams had a stranglehold on the NHRA. The Sox & Martin Cuda was not a Hemi, it was a 68' 340 Barracuda fastback that ran in E/SA. It won class, beating Joe Coletti's 68' 340 Barracuda (12,90's). Jim McFarland of Hot Rod magazine drove it, all the way to Runner-Up in $tock Eliminator. That book mentions that Sox & Martin had a 440 Road Runner, but that is incorrect, 1968 Road Runners were not equipped with 440's, only 383's or a Street Hemi. The Road Runner out there, which I think was a 383 ran in E/Stock. I found something that says a 13.12 ET, which means it probably got eliminated early in E/Stock class. Matt, Jack said, it was a new 383 Road Runner, E/S. Ran 13.10's. Knocked off in class eliminations early. Engine was stock, not even taken out of car, heads were done, carb rej-jetted, Hooker Headers, Schieffer clutch set-up, Hurst shifter, 4.56 gears, some suspension tricks, and 7" slicks. They did not expect much, just rushed it in to get in class. pc |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Matt,
R/T said he figured it out. In 1968, ran the 68' Dodge Charger R/T Hemi in A/MP for the 68' season In 69' he ran it at the Winternationals in B/MP, and several west-coast events. At the 1969 Winternationals he won Street/Eliminator in A/MP with a 68' Hemi Dart (w/converted 69' grille and trim) In 1969, he ran a 69' Dodge Charger R/T Hemi in SS/F. Again, campaigned it throughout the season. With the new S/S weight breaks, it was more competitive. At the end of the year he converted it into B/MP (added the 'Flyin Wedge' lettering). Won the 70' Winternationals in B/MP (set record 10.74) In March 1970, he got a new 70' Charger R/T Hemi. This time with an automatic. He ran SS/EA. He set the record with that car at 11.29 @ 124mph. This car stayed in SS/EA, until he sold it after the Worlds Finals. P PC |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Flyin-Wedge,
Dick Landy won the NHRA B/MP class at the 1969 NHRA Winternationals with a 1968 Charger R/T Hemi. Class win 11.01 @ 116.88 (on the brakes). He also won the Street Eliminator Championship their with that car. I think, the reason he ran the 68' Charger R/T in B/MP in 1969, was because it did not have a favorable weight break for Super/Stock. At #3754 lbs. it fell into the wrong end of SS/D for 1968 (approx. 150 lbs. heavier than the other B-Body Hemi's), and SS/E for 1969. The 69' Charger R/T Hemi, a little heavier at #3845 lbs., fell into the 1969 SS/F class, giving the 69' car a better chance. pc pc |

Thought I would put my 2 cents worth in here since I was the guy that found & documented the Landy 4-spd. 68 Hemi Dart. I actually purchased it from Steve O'Neil from a National Dragster 2 line ad back in 1996. Both of us did not know this was Dick's car at the time. It looked like just another wore out, beat up old race car, but it was a real LO car, so I dragged it home.I started scratching down the paint on this thing to find Landy's colors. Needless to say, this was a very cool find, & after about a year of convincing Dick I had his car, he & his wife Jean came up to Canada. I picked them up at the airport in my original 70 hemicuda. Dick thought this was very cool, but not as cool as I thought it was driving the Landy's around town in this thing. By the end of the day, he had documented it as his original 4 speed Hemi Dart Anyway, one of the many stories he told me, he said that the 4 spd. Dart left the Hurst facility with no drive train what's so ever. When he placed his order for two of the Hemi Darts, they only had Autos available, no 4 spds. Dick wanted the cars NOW, so he instructed Hurst to send one Dart ,as an automatic, complete., & then send a second one to him minus engine & trans. so he could convert it to a 4 speed. This one got shipped in the belly of a 747 due to time constraints to complete this car for competion. Once in California, Dick built it as a 4 speed & it never got an auto installed while he owned it. When I decoded the original fender tag, sure enough, it was tagged as an Automatic car. Thought I'd share this with you. Liteweight Daryl |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Daryl,
After 42 years, still more information coming in. Was that car the one that won A/MP at the 70' Winternationals. With the 69' grille. Another story. Heard D.L, refused to run a 67' Hemi Charger 4-speed in Super/Stock in 1967. Too heavy at #3907 lbs. Despite being classed in SS/D, (8.70-9.48 wt/hp) Didn't want to spend his free time rebuilding the drive-train every week. Would run the Hemi Charger, but only as an automatic, in SS/DA Was told no, the Charger had to be run as a 4-speed for Sales/Marketing purposes. pc |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Paul
Yes this is the same car. Pepsi came on board as a sponsor for a short time also. He put all 69 trim on it to appease Dodge ,to stay current with the latest model year.He filled in the 68 round quarter panel side lites but never cut the quarters for the rectangular ones. Dick liked a little extra glitter on his race cars, so he even installed the full sized trunk filler plate, put wheel well trim on it, Hemi emblems from a Charger on the doors, & the famous spinners on the Cragars. He even installed a woodgrain steering in it. When I sold this car, I needed to have a keepsake from it, so I kept the steering wheel. It's now installed in the Hemi Dart I own now. I even put spinners on the Cragars on this car, because they looked soooo good on the Landy car. Liteweight Daryl |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
Daryl,
Interesting history. Wonder how much time was on his hands. Winning Modified Eliminator at the 70' Winternationals with the A/MP Hemi Dart. Putting together a Pro/Stock car, running his shop, Match Race events and car clinics. Also, won SS/E (8.00-8.49 wt/hp) at the 70' Winternationals with his 69' Charger R/T Hemi, 11.15 @ 120.00. Then ran it in B/MP (NHRA) and S/S in (AHRA) And in March 70, got a new 70' Charger R/T Hemi (automatic) for SS/EA. |

Good pick-up. The 68 Charger R/T Hemi 4-speed. Ran and won the SS/E (Super Stock/Eliminator) at the 68' AHRA Winternationals. Ran in A/MP in NHRA for 68' Too heavy for class, put Dick at a disadvantage. Converted to B/MP for 1969. Also, brother Mike ran the 68' Coronet R/T with the 440 in SS/F, and SS/FA. pc |
Re: Dick Landy 'Q & A'
bringing up an old post here but going way back but i beleive the sox and martin gtx was not a gtx they did that for chrysler sales the car was a RO belvedere II with gtx badging on it. the landy 67 car the eric now owns we knew where the car was but never knew for sure if it was in fact his car since all the tags were off of it until he asked about it but it still had all the paint and writing on it from crazy james from the soulful strutters who got it from purkle if thats how u spell it. the car was bought with 361 miles and stuffed in a barn for years (landy took many tags off and kept them in a jar in his house from what we heard) but also he had two 67 cars and as far as i know both of the cars were 440 cars but he put a hemi in one and ran it that way??
also i have a big question for you guys out there. mike landy ran a 68 dodge coronet r/t right? from what i heard is he ran this car then it was sold to purkle and at that time landy had it painted blue but the r/t painted on the quarter was taped off and left on it that car was a 440 auto. a curious car just popped up by me and there are a couple things on it that tipped me off to one of landys cars comparing it to his other ones and what he did to those are done to this one can someone give me alittle info i know they had several 68 cars in the pits with them but hearing how this car disappeared in the southern state i have to beleive its the same car |

It is all very cvonfusing..... 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T Hemi. Turquiose with white vinyl top,,,,,,,,bucket seats. Ran in SS/B in 1967,,,,,, It was a 4-speed car,,,,,,,,,and a flat hood. Winternationals 1968,,,,,,,it ran with a flat hood, and in SS/D At the Hot Rod Magazine Championships in March 1968, at Riverside Dragway in California,,,,,,,,Mary Ann Foss was the designated driver,,,,,,,,,it was classed in SS/DA They put on a scooped-hood off of the W/O Coronet Model 440. Its really amazing, all the different photos that pop up from back in the day. Paul, I'm wondering if anyone has a shot of ABC sportscaster Keith Jackson in or around one of Dick's Chargers. I remember an in car camera run, down the the track, that Keith took with Dick, banging away on the shifter, that aired on "Wide World of Sports" many years ago. What would really be a home run is if someone could come up with the footage. Thanks for all you're doing Paul. Danny Durham |
