Topper: I may be able to answer some questions for you. There were 2 Superbirds at S&M. The one in front of the building at the top in post #32 was a street/show car. The lower shop photo shows Joe Fisher at rr, myself standing at front of the race car. The Paul Lance SS cuda is on the right and Chuck Neely's (SS racer from S Carolina) car is against the wall. The race car was sold to Norm Parha (sp?) from Baton Rouge LA some time late 70, early 71. The show car belonged to Chrysler and I believe was returned to them. The race car was searched for by MANY people since then and has never been found.

Randomly came across this thread.
Funny story on Dad running the bird. He won first round of eliminations, came back up for 2nd and they had marked the sheet wrong. They wouldn't let him back in because he wasn't listed as the winner. Other guy was already gone. Correct on being 2 and one being a street car. Car was butchered later in life, but hasn't been found, but plenty of people own it, as they keep trying to sell it to me. |

Update: I found the shop that I think the old bracket car used to rot behind. Also found the owner that sold her after Katrina.
The shop looks like it would have been mostly underwater following the hurricane. The owner says he'll try to dig up some old photos, but can't help with who he sold the car to. Post pics if anybody's got color pics of it following its trailer accident, nose removal, and repaint under Norm Pearah. Happy hunting. |

Bumping an old thread. We just finished filming a Buddy Martin documentary at my place. During the week of filming, we confirmed that the "race bird" had the vinyl taken off the roof and painted per Ronnie's instructions. It was then promptly corrected by the higher ups to have it put back on. This was confirmed by the man that painted the car at that time.

Sweet find! So many questions:
Who painted the car, Red Gibson? Rumored that there was a Plymouth dealership Body shop that painted the SM cars and then they were lettered by Carl Clayton. Any pics of the car before or after paint? Before pics would be the HOLY GRAIL of Superchicken pics. Where can I see the documentary? |

Documentary is close to being finished it will be posted here on the main page, also Red did alot of the paint work and Carl lettered the cars.

I read somewhere in some obscure post in a random forum about a guy that used to work at a dealership where he used to wash/prep the S&M cars before and after paint. Kind of implied the cars were painted at the dealer's body shop. Would Red have worked there too? |

I wonder which the order is for the supposed two cars One SS/E One C/MP Neither car has side markers or the fender scoops Yet, I found a picture , stock hood and it DOES have side markers and fender scoops. Plus it has Crager's instead of Keystone wheels. And In said photo Buster appears to be younger. So I " think " its an old original of the period photo????? OR isnt it Anyone have pictures of the SS/E car . where its lettered up and does have the side markers ( original back in the day photos only please , As I know of at least 2 clones out there ) If so Any idea WHEN said photos were taken in its life |

As Steve Stasko stated above, the 3rd photo is someone's cloned car.
The S&M cars were all painted in the beginning by Red in his home garage. He did have a teen son that worked with him (Tommy?) Red did not work in a dealership. Worked for many years at Western Electric in Burlington until he retired. Tommy would be in his 70's now. The Superbird was at Red's house when I started there Dec 1969 but I did not see it until it was painted. The front fender vents and side marker lamps had been removed and filled as well. The race car had a Hemi, 4speed. The street/clinic car was 440/auto. See post #42 about 2nd car. The race car was SS/E first raced at the Blaney SC Div 2 points meet in 1970 and later that year at Dallas in CM/P. Herb was the last to race the car at Pomona in 1971in CM/P. Then it was sold to Norm Perha in Baton Rouge. Again, refer to post #42 concerning 2 cars |

The Superbird race car was an original hemi car off the assembly line. Street hemi version 10:1 compression, 2 carter 4bbl/ 4 speed. fit the SS/E class well at 3800lbs+. It used the Edelbrock "Rat Roaster" intake which was legal for street hemi's in late 69.
When the car was converted to CM/P it had a hood scoop installed with an "A990" cross ram and Holley's as I recall. The super stock 10:1 engine would have been replaced with a 12.5:1 compression race engine as well. |
