Re: Sox & Martin (BO29's Only)

I grew up between Dodge Main and the Lynch Road assembly plants. The HOT sticker on the windshield was put on a lot of the high horsepower cars coming out of the Lynch plant. The cars were driven off the line through a security station and across the street to a lot where the cars were loaded onto trucks. The guys who drove those cars were all high seniority guys who were pretty much older. The HOT stick was to warn them of the cars power and not kill themselves.
The Hemi Bo29 cars were put into an adjacent lot after they came from Hurst. Went to see them a couple of times. Knew when they were being picked up when open trailers went down Mt Elliot street to the plant. Some racers bypassed the dealer and picked the cars up at the factory.

The pic is from an adjoining lot next to Lynch Rd Assembly Plant. It was taken by a high school friend about a month before we graduated. The cars were parked right up against the fence. There was no hiding them. At one time there were probably 6-10 at one time.

Nice shots, but I wonder who's B029 it turned out to be...also notice there are two pieces of paper stuck to the windshield.

Cool! Any chance of you posting a much larger photo? Your photo reminds me of the Oldsmobile dealer whose lot was located a couple of houses away from ours and whose lot was not fenced-in. This (car-crazed) kid in the late-1960s used to ride his bike through the lot and check out the cool 4-4-2's and other Oldsmobiles.

It was just too cool back then...I couldn't wait "to grow up" and participate in the action. For sure something would happen before that time. :( Supercars and souped-up cars here, there and everywhere, and me, not old enough! :( I eventually did "grow up" and got my drivers license and graduated from high school but brand new and real supercars were no longer being produced by 1976. :( Still, lots of second-hand supercars around back then for a song. :)

Anyway, in late-1968 or early-1969, Bennedetti Oldsmobile received a white & gold Hurst/Olds. This was the coolest-looking 4-4-2 this (then) 11-year-old seen! I used to check out that car and fantasize all the time. Then one day it was gone. They put the H/Olds in the showroom which was located on the next street over. Great! I used to ride my bike to the dealer's front window and gaze at the car. Then one day it was gone. SOLD!

Then the 1970 models...my (foggy) memory recalls the 2nd coolest-looking '4-4-2' this kid seen up to that point...a bright yellow Rallye 350 Oldsmobile. Man, this supercar stuff is too cool! Can't wait to get my drivers license (you know the rest of the story :( ).

One day as I was making my rounds through the dealer's lot (circa 1970) I did see my old friend, the coolest-looking 4-4-2 I ever seen, but not in good shape at all. There it was parked against the wall in the dealer's back lot, with roof caved in (obviously someone rolled it), body banged up, no wheels or tires on the car, etc. "Another one bites the dust," as rock group Queen would sing a decade or so later.

Is that 2 different cars in the lower photo from the upper? No GTX lettering on the B-body in the 2nd shot and the white trunk stripe is missing from the 'Cuda in one of the pics.
Just a quick observance

Taking another look it appears the upper cars are '68s and the lower cars are '69s, but I'm a Chevy guy, so what do I know??

I seen this on Jayski. com this morning

Sad News - Randy Stewart: Randal Lee "Randy" Stewart, 61, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012 at his residence. Randy was born March 17, 1951 in Cabarrus County [NC] to the late Myrl Stewart and Fannie M. Stewart who survives. He worked in the early years for Eugene Coard, Ronald Liles, and Sox and Martin. Later years he worked for Hendrick Motorsports.

I did not know him but RIP

Never heard of Randy but sorry to hear the sad news nevertheless.

Here's a photo of Ronnie Sox at Detroit Dragway in the late-1960s. Btw, it looks to me like there's a bit too much positive camber.

This was an S&M Cuda. Stewart Pomeroy owned a couple of S&M cars, a RR, the Cuda and the Colt. He also owned the Missile after Carlton was done with it. He owned better cars than I dream about owning.

mopar 68 re too much positive camber. S&M were probably just trying to get the car to go straight down the track. When you've raced one of these cars you learn quickly the frt end doesn't settle down for a long time under power and that the frt end goes into a negative camber, toe out , guard rail kissin stance. I'm thinkin they tried lots of + camber to try and fix this.

When running larger front tires for more roll out in lights it required lowering torq. bars to reduce ride height. Because upper control arms are shorter than lower arms and swing on a shorter arc you get negitive camber at static height. If camber is adjusted to zero degreas the camber must go positive when the car leaves. The trick is to control camber as much as possible along with a good amount of caster and get (NO) toe change thru the entire front end travel.
In that shot it looks like the right front wheel has gained some toe out. It may be just the position of camera though.
The Cuda that Pannuty purchased from S/M had no work done in the front end department, and Ronnie was match racing it the night we took delivery.

Notice the difference in the 2 Sox and Martin cudas at the beginning of this thread. Both pictures taken in 1970 at the Winter nationals and the race the week before at Orange County International Raceway. One a SS/B and the other Pro Stock driven by Don Carlton. Check the decals on the front fenders placement / different on both cars. The Pro car was the same cuda ran at the US Nationals in September 1969 in B gas to show case the new class.
