Is this a direct bolt in?
I just a acquired a 1985 Pontiac Parisienne Safari Wagon. It has a Chevy 305 4bbl. Looking at the guide, I think the 305 may put me out of the 'Dime Rocket' running. It already has 100 extra HP. But it will be fun for me and my 13 year old to run in Jr Street.

Re: My 88 Olds wagone U/SA 10 Pennies

The wagon in question will weigh about 4200 pounds.
That's way, way over capacity for Vega box.
The Time Bomb Vega box is smaller, only 2 bolts will line up, the Pitman arm has a much smaller spline, and the rag joint coupler is under the standard GM size too.
Years ago, I started to put one on my 78 400 Firebird, but then decided it was too shaky of a deal, just by looking at it.
I've seen plenty of 3rd Gen. SBC Camaros with them, and to me , that's about the limit.
These wagons should have a standard size GM car, or an S-10 box manual box.
It's almost a direct bolt in, except for the Pitman arm, which is the subject for another thread.

I would think a Vega box would be illegal. But I should know better...

Well, ya know , it doesn't look all that out of place on a 3rd Gen. Camaro...

I think it's okay for safety reasons.

I ran a small box on my old 307 wagon. 13.70's with about 5k in it.

S10 probably - I remember getting it well under 4000 lbs and then adding 500 back into it.

What about cutting the crash bars out of the doors. Also can you eliminate some of the hard ware on front bumper?

You guys have been making me nervous on Vega box. I started thinking about it and my old Super Stock Monte with 454 had a Vega box and if I remember correctly it weighed 1800 plus lbs in front weight. More updates and picture soon.

If you mean the impact shock absorbers for the bumpers, that would also be no in Stock. Lighter fasteners could be used though.

That being said, I don't think I've seen a tech guy shine a flashlight down inside a door, in about 40 years.
You'd be lucky to find all the window regulators in 2017.

Mark, that is exactly what I was thinking have never seen tech look at that not in div 4.

Cool build looks like it would be a blast, think outside of the box and read every line of the rulebook.

Finally getting started. Long over due. Car came from Orland Park IL, hence the surface rust. Removing nearly full gas tank. Will get fuel lines removed and rusty brake lines removed today.

Re: My 88 Olds wagone U/SA 10 Pennies

Bill I will call you.
Here is my small progress. Always something to do before I get to work on car.
Anyway I assumed that all G body o.d. rear control arm bushings would be the same size as hole in wagon control arm i.d. WRONG. I didnt want to put stock bushings in and wanted to use these urethane ones. So I made reducing sleeves to except bushing in larger hole. Then cut metal pieces for reinforcing arm itself. I had the metal, lathe and time so it didnt cost me anything. Im sure there is an easier way, but here I am. I have completed 3 of the 4 holes. The uppers Im going to cut and use half of them and the other end adjustable to set pinion angle or just make some from scratch.
http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/v...ywood/bush.jpg

PS. I problably could have found G body arms and cut and stretched as the wagon ones are way longer, but I didnt have any and didnt want to buy any

Jeff Stout 04-04-2017 05:09 PM

Re: My 88 Olds wagone U/SA 10 Pennies

After fighting the gout for a week Im sort of back on my feet. I welded and painted lower reinforced arms and starting mocking up adjustable uppers. I need to put rear end car to get final angle and length on uppers, drill hole and weld. This is stuff laying around shop. The shiny item in picture is adjustable heim end.

Re: My 88 Olds wagone U/SA 10 Pennies

Jeff, Earlier, you said you had a 12 bolt for the car. Still using it?
That being the case, have you eyed up the idea of using the metric arms with it?
I know the G bodies are way different..Different angles, metric bolts. Also the upper ears on 12 bolt housing don't point towards frame brackets. I have never tried doing a later big car / 12 bolt deal, but wouldn't be surprised if they are more like the G bodies.
I did one of them in 1985, before you could buy anything for the swap.
Also, location of spring pads?

Jeff Stout 04-05-2017 11:07 AM

Re: My 88 Olds wagone U/SA 10 Pennies

UMI Performance makes a offset upper arm that fits a 12 bolt to G body. But my lower and upper control arms are way longer then G body, so I had to made my own. I don't trust the metric holes in frame where control arms mount so I'm going to weld 1/2 large OD washers in place to reinforce hole and make them 1/2 diameter. Spring perches may need to be addressed.

Yes .I made offset arms in 1985
Have you tried fitting those uppers in the car?
You just might end up with a left and right upper arm.
Crank that welder up good. You'll be pulling on a butt weld.

Not sure if photo will show up. Photobucket is being stupid today. I installed a bolt to help secure upper adjustable rod to upper mount. This will be much stronger then just a butt weld the 2 together. Rear end is in and in place left to right.

Re: My 88 Olds wagone U/SA 10 Pennies

I used bigger tubing & made some threaded ends, the bigger tube gives more welding area.
