I have 2 questions. Maybe stupid but I must ask.
The fresh air intake vents. Is it ok just to block them off with sheet metal?
The car has a inside hood release. Is it ok to do away with it and make the hood release from the front grill area? My cable is broken and I can fab a handle release that will work fine.

Robbie, you have to leave the heater controls in the dash ..That is, whatever parts show from the front ;-)
You have to block the cowl vents on the inside.
I don't see a problem with the hood latch being outside, as long as the safety lock apparatus is retained. I doubt anyone would notice actually.

Cool. Thanks Mark. I have 2 days off next week. Lots to do. It's the first car I've built from the ground up. I'm having a blast!

And here I was just about to head out to Apache Junction Sunday to buy the kick panel vent mechanism that I'm missing for the right-hand side. I have the left one already installed, that came with the car. The '66 Malibu is different from later ones where it's integral with the kick panel itself, this is a separate piece with the flapper valve and cable and knob to control it. But if it's not a tech issue if it's just blocked off under the kick panel I think I'll skip it and make a block-off plate.

Rob, I'm glad to see that progress is being made.

Actually you don't need to block it off at all. You'll just get a little "astro ventilation" in the Az. summer. The cowl vents are designed so the water will run out at the bottom of the fender.
You just can't block the cowl vent on top...Called streamlining in the rule book, I believe.

Re: 79 Mustang project U/SA

Yes you dont have to block off the kick panels and you must leave the cowl alone BUT on 1967 and earlier cars heater controls are optional ( you can claim heater delete)

There is mastic that glues the door skin to the crash bars, so don't just start prying and pulling on it, otherwise you will do a number on the door skin. My 78 Zephyr, the crash bar had to be cut in half to get it out of the doors A cut-off wheel is best, and whatever you do protect/remove the glass or you will be replacing it. The grinding embers will pit the glass.

I second that too. The Fox body cars can quickly lose weight. I came up 120lbs light my first trip to the track, and this driver is way overweight himself.

Well I have a fantastic news update! I sold my 67 Mustang bracket car so I now have the money to fund this project. That will make life much easier. I will miss the ole girl but it was time. Ten years and lots of fun but I really look forward to Class Racing.

You can build this thing right without spending a million bucks. Hope to see you out there soon. You and BJ can gang up on the wagon.

The Ford gang throwing out the gauntlet. The 4200lb tow vehicle against the little Fords. This will be fun.

Re: 79 Mustang project U/SA

Well I made some good headway over the last week. Picked up some old school Centerline wheels, a 5 lug disk brake front set up from a 94 GT, ordered upper and lower control arms and Mike Graham is going to sell me BJ's C4 with a low 1st gear and a Mark Yacavone converter.Next weekend will be a busy one. Lot's to do.

Re: 79 Mustang project U/SA

The '94 brakes may not be legal. I thought that the '94 went to a different spindle type, which may cause a problem. I don't know, but you may want to check if making the spindle change is considered cross-breeding parts. It may not matter, since aftermarket brakes are allowed. However, the spindles as I recall are very different from the 79-93 spindles, as are the rotors.

If you do run into problems, I have a set of 5 lug rotors and gt calipers that I would donate to you. You have to pick up the shipping costs. I had the caliper pistons coated by Swain, and solid inserts installed. The rotors have 1/2" long studs and new bearings. They spin pretty well.

They're available to you if you need them.

RobbieRacer 02-01-2016 11:47 AM

Re: 79 Mustang project U/SA

They are supposed to be a direct bolt in, but if it turns out that I can’t use them I will just take them back. I was going to get 87-93 spindles and run 5 lug rotors, but thought this set up was better. I’ll have to look into it a little deeper.
Thanks for the offer.

The SN95 spindle and hub system is definitely better than the Fox set up. It should be lighter too.

I'm finally getting some work done. Rear end out, cleaning up the sheet metal. Pulling the front end apart. Nasty greasy mess. Got a great deal on the rims. I cant remember the last time I saw Firestone Drag 500 tires. I like the old school rims.

Got word from the D7 tech guy. Good news. You guys are right. I can use that intake and It's ok to use the SN95 brakes. Cool.

Although I think you should take Saturday off and take a car, any car, over to Wild Horse and have some fun with us.

Got some more work done. Got the K member stripped and repainted. There must have been 10 pounds of grease on it.
Also got the motor pulled apart. This motor turned over with no problem, Not tight at all. I have never seen a crank with this much damage that didn't have a broken rod. 1/4 inch groove worn in it. WOW.

Bah, it's a ford, string and scouring pad dipped in 30wt and it'll go another 150,000 minimum!

Now if it was a chev....it would of been in pieces when you found it! LOL!
