Bob Michael has a '62 GP which runs the same Tri-Power 389. Norman was thinking of trying to rig up a 421SD engine for his Cat. Don't know if that's still in the works, or not. It would be real cool !

Who knows about the last competitive 421SD Stocker, & when it last raced ?

Mark,
Do you remember Don Scinto`s SS Pontiac wagon?
I heard it was a low HP 389, because of the cam
in SS cam gets changed anyway, so it was fast
Any details?

Here's a wagon that was a Stock record holder. Don't have any info on it. But, It was in HPP mag. So, those who have that issue could tell us more.

I'm posting another wagon on the SS Pontiac thread, that was a MANY time record holder.

Since I have raced Pontiacs for 40 years I love them all. One that comes to my mind is that big Pontiac Wagon I think it ran SS/O Jack Mullins. Car just happened to have Turks Auto Salvage on the lower rear Quarter. Secondly would be anything Bob Michael was racing. Presently to me Chris Stephenson's Firebird is impressive.
The first stocker that ever caught my attention was a 69 Firebird C/SA of Pete and Wolfe Flescher (?) back in the Motion Raceway Days

Cool Thread

Yeah, we talked about that Jack Mullins wagon, on the SS thread. We saw him race it, at a points race in Jackson, MS, in '75. I didn't know a Pontiac engine would wind that high, til I heard that 389 screamin. I loved watchin/listening as Jack snatched on the 4-speed. He was my 2nd Pontiac hero, after Truman Fields.

That year, he won the Sports Nats & the US Nats. At the US Nats, he beat the factory Mopar, driven by "Miss Mighty Mopar", Judy Lilly. And, your almost correct. The car had "Turk's Auto Parts" on the rear lower qrts. :)

I agree that Chris's Bird is awesome. And he's had a good season.

Not familiar with the '69 Bird you mentioned. I suppose the only '69 Bird Stocker I can think of that is racing now, belongs to John Schloe. There are probably others I just don't know about. The '68's have always been popular.

PS: Wish I'd had the money, when your car was up for sale. Sounded like a bargain to me. Seems i remember that the new owner won at least 1 race with it this season.

Awesome thread - lots of history and lots of great pictures. I’m glad to see so many deserving Pontiac racers get placed on this list like the Burtons and the Schloes. Both of those families have made my racing life such a blast with their advice, assistance, friendship and hospitality over the years (despite the fact that I’m a Chevy guy) especially the Schloes.

As far as the fast Pontiac guys - I’d like to add Bob Mulry (Mulry/Aceves Racing) and Bryan Phillips into the list.....lots of Class wins and records for those two teams....not to mention all around good people. This thread has been great - please add more pictures if you have them.

LOL !

My favorite colors have always been silver & black. Ordered my '69 RA3 GTO silver with black interior. Kept it that color thru 60k+ street miles & 2 seasons of Stock Elim racing at local tracks.

Just another proof that opinions differ. Some like red, yellow, or green. I never have. Don't have a clue why not everyone likes the same colors, smells, or foods.

Yeah, I just ran across both those names as US Nats class winners, in 2004. Mulry had a '74 Formula, & of course Phillips has a '67 Bird. Phillips won E/SA & Mulry won K/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop

It was an all Pontiac K/SA final, with another white Bird in the other lane, driven by Don Holmes.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop

I like the silver '68 Bird that Bob Aceves drives.

And speakin of silver '68's, I like the the stick version that Adam Strang drives.

Since my wife raced '68 Birds, I've always liked 'em. Here's a Gillespie Bird driven by Julie Biermann.

Ronald Prince has one.

Todd Hoven has one. Todd now drives a Mopar. Duane has been driving the Bird. There's a story behind the Bird. I think Todd got it from Truman Fields, For a while he painted it up as a tribute to Truman's "Hard Times" Bird, which was the car that made Truman my first Pontiac hero. Todd has explained the whole story about the car to me. But, I may get it all messed up. So, I'll just leave it at that.

Leo Glasbrenner ran a '68. Lately, he's been racing a late model in Stock, and his 4th gen GT car in SS. Don't know if he plans on running the '68 next season, or not.

Gotta give a special shout out to Brent Flynn. When I 1st discovered this site, he had a build thread going, switching his '68 Bird from a 455 bracket car, over to a 400 powered Stocker.

And, he was trying to do it on a budget. I REALLY enjoyed following his build.

Thought of another Pontiac record holder. Scott Underhill's '71 455HO powered T-37 held the E/SA nat record, for a while. And I think his engine just got a 5hp reduction.

I think Stephanie Pike now drives the former Larry Maxwell red 455 Lemans.

While lookin thru my pics, I also found one labeled Larry Maxwell Wagon. It's one of those that has the GTO type front. This one reminds me of the Jim Hand wagon. For any who don't know, Jim was a big name in Pontiac circles, having written a book & lots of articles about Pontiac performance.

Jim's book is out of print & now has a high price tag.

Don't think I've mentioned this. Adam Strang got a good piston approved & built a 350HO for his '68 Bird. I think he made at least 2 races with it.

Anyhow, he posted that he ran a 10.837 @ 122.80 mph ! As far as I know that's by far the quickest pass ever made by a Pontiac 350 powered Stocker.

I suppose the next quickest might be low 11's, by one of the '74 GTO's, maybe, Brad Koivisto.
