Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
We were also able to "seal" off the drivers compartment from the trunk. Now we will begin mounting/routing the fuel cell.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
With the crazy cold temperatures rolling through, about the only thing I could do was get started on the wiring. You'll see I updated the print with some revisions. One in particular being a DPDT relay added to latch the line lock on for staging purposes and releasing once the clutch is released. This also allowed me to wiring in the burnout rpm separate from the launch rpm.
All electronics will be where the glovebox was. https://i.postimg.cc/90KL4v8z/Wiring-Diagram.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/jqH6ynDZ/20210116-122137.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/rFq1jyWc/20210213-091704.jpg |

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
I think you need 2 bars running from the top of main hoop to the rear frame. I maybe wrong might check rule book.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Looks nice. Now that I see the photos of your electrical layout everything makes sense. Good luck fitting all this stuff in your glove box with room for expansion. I tried that with my Mustang and wound up with a panel on the passenger side foot board. But that's a Ford....
Keep up the good work. |

I checked back in the book (I run a 10 point cage), and this is correct. This car has the crossbar angle braced but not the top hoop. Here's a pic from the 2020 book: |

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Looking back, can't believe we missed the main hoop support bars but thankfully it was brought to our attention before the interior was in.
So thank you! We made quick work with a saturday afternoon and added two bars. https://i.postimg.cc/xC36jzZT/20210220-114043.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/k54SRtDg/20210220-142142.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/3R0Dn5XM/20210220-142231.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
To wrap up our afternoon we settled on our fuel cell location. Made our fuel cell band before running out of enough material for a on the second one.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Can we run a hand brake for our park brake? The stock pedal brake runs into our roll cage and its also a bear to get the cable ran to it.
|
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
You can remove the parking brake. Parking brake is optional per rules.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Well I wasn't able to make it back this weekend due to work and probably wont for a few more but dad started on the new dash cover, along with mounting the "control center"
I made the panel without measuring under the dash myself so modifications had to happen. The terminal strip closest to the firewall had to be moved in order for the panel to fit. With the heater core panel easily removable dad come up with a quick solution. Try not to knock his flip phone images too bad! https://i.postimg.cc/Bb5PBsNC/thumbnail-IMG-0025.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZY6NSFZy/thumbnail-IMG-0026.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/TwDDhnDF/thumbnail-IMG-0022.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Pretty cool. Beats my attempt to fit all that stuff in the glove box of my Mustang.
I really wish I still had my flip phone. Motorola Razr. |

Also we are doing the heads ourselves. We had an extra head that we cut in half for a little R&D.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Hey Everyone!
Had a slight hiatus from Classracer as the Divisional season kicked in. At that point the Super Street car was giving us fits since we were going from a 414sbc to a 632bbc with almost 1.5 times more in the power categories. After a season filled with a gear change, new headers, a couple converter swaps, one broken transmission(valve body issues), and the hundred adjustments to the suspension we really had us a competitive car to close out the season. Even with all that said we were able to put ourselves one round away from a divisional championship(tie-but had the head to head) in just our 3rd season chasing the D5 points. After winning the St. Louis Divisional we had to take our season into November, none other than a 2800 mile round trip out to Vegas to improve a second round loss. First pass off the trailer I hear a ticking noise and caught we found out later to be a bushed lifter that froze up a one point creating a flat spot. Fortunately the cam was serviceable to get us through the weekend but after winning first round I did everything on one end to win but was dropped on my head on the big end. Losing the round that would of gave me the 11 points I needed by .009. We will be switch gears back to the malibu as the frost sets in! https://i.postimg.cc/QxB16RXV/Resize...4-164806-1.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/QNg1vp5Z/Screen...436-Chrome.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/zfM4mssv/IMG-0158.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Now for the malibu....
We have made slight progress with a new driveshaft loop and driveshaft. https://i.postimg.cc/mr0ppQ9F/20211226-104102.jpg We have completed the brakes and they are bled, working well. Next, was the interior where we have completed the carpet, seat mounting, and seat belts. The switch panel is just sitting in there and not the final destination. https://i.postimg.cc/bJcL9qXx/20211225-154100.jpg Lastly, We have finally received our block back and now can start assembling!!! https://i.postimg.cc/C5tRbLXY/20211226-100344.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Love this build! Those boxy Malibus are one of my favorite body styles - they make great-looking race cars - and the clutch pedal always adds several points to the cool-meter.
Can't wait to see this one on the track! |

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Something we've been scratching our head on is the clutch linkage and finding the right headers. We end up just buying a set and rerouting the #5 hole to give us clearance. Here is the before pics.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Update on the rest.
We did get our crank balanced. We also bought a set of Total Seal rings $$$$ Intake acid dipped and painted. Waiting for bearings to start assembling. We cleaned up and painted the instrument cluster and bezel around it. Settled on the switch panel location so we started wiring. So far I am really happy with how the wiring is going and the routing to the glove box. Tach mounted. Fuel pressure gauge mounted. Clutch and flywheel arrived. Should really see some movement now if we can start assembling the short block! https://i.postimg.cc/J4SCxW5B/20220122-153605.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Maybe I am just used to the old Holley fuel pressure regulators, but that appears to be plumbed wrong. On my Holley reg, the higher pressure feed goes to the bottom, where you gauge is plumbed, and the side ports are reduced by the adjusting screw. Seems odd that you couldn`t find headers to work with the factory clutch linkage, as I have seen several stick G body GMs with a 4 speed and headers, but at least you could make those work.

Must retain the unaltered stock manifold, consistent with year
and engine horsepower claimed. Grinding, sandblasting, or any other modification inside manifold prohibited. Runners and plenum must retain OEM appearance. :D |

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Looking good! You're going to need a clutch fork like this:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/n...caAqljEALw_wcB The throwout bearing needs to have about .300-.400" freeplay when the clutch is engaged, which means you won't have anything keeping the pushrod from falling out of the pocket in the fork. This way, you can use a rod end / heim joint to connect it to the fork. Keep it up, hope to see you out with it this season! |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
heim ends are the only way to go also make up a piece of tubing to go from the Z bar to the fork and put left and right hand threads so you can use helms along with lock nuts--- makes adjusting so much easier PLUS no way that its going to fall out of the assembly---FED 387

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Hey Everyone,
Been a bit! I thought we were turning a corner but the short block had its barriers as well. Total seal sent us the wrong rings and it was month before we turned them around. Add in the offseason maintenance on the super street ride and the malibu's progress really slowed. However, we have the shortblock now assembled. We are really happy with the assembly, deck height, bearing clearance, cam installation etc. https://i.postimg.cc/vZZKns7h/IMG-0302.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/jd4VNcpx/IMG-0303.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/HLjFqgVn/IMG-0307.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/dV5zN1Qg/IMG-0306.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/BnSrCD3x/IMG-0308.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
What is everyone's thoughts here? There is not much threads for the head bolts. Should we go with studs?
https://i.postimg.cc/k4KYCX9J/IMG-0305.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Pretty sure no studs on a stocker.
|
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
It's the 21st century. Studs are legal in a "Stocker".
