Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
When closed loop the system will work to attain those AF values notice the % of change and edit the fuel table or let the system self adjust. Be sure to save each tune after changes are made.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I disagree I built the engine also. Robin Lawrence’s dyno service help me more than I know I think it’s in closed loop and corrects very little. Plugs and pipes look good.
They just called us to the lanes. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Seems you have some of the best help available to anyone in the country.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I know I’m getting better. I’m just not getting better fast enough to gain confidence and be able to evaluate some of the things I would like to find out about. Things like individual cylinder timing, torsional twist of the crank and how to tune for it, timing injection pulse to reduce to reduce energy in the reversion wave in the intake. And all of these things may help or hurt but it would be nice to know.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
To help avoid confusion on what file needs to be downloaded to see the data log of the run. I will delete the down loadable files from the ECU so only to have a choice of around eight to download for the run. Every time I stated the engine it starts a new file.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The rev limiter works I just hope it was set low enough.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Just picked up my Buxton spring checker, thanks Mr Don showing me your Buxton. It will be a great addition to my engine program.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Just started working on a new set of heads for my small elephant engine. I hope it will run well enough to get in Indy. I still think it should be class winners and the remainder of the field based on qualifying, that will get folks to run them all out. I have never won class in super stock.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
8750 rpm spike and the engine leaked within 4% of each other. The Comp springs did there job, Jeff Taylor gave me some good direction, and the Buxton spring checker gave me very repeatable information to set springs from coil bind. I think I will lower the Rev limiter to 8500 just to give me that warm fuzzy feeling.
I would like another Copper Class Trophy from the Sports and a class picture without “The Mask”. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Yesterday I decided to stop tiptoeing around the fear of the tune for Dumbo. I changed a few things with the help of Robin and Jeff. I took good notes I think and tried to use good judgment on not straying to far from the line.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Yesterday was a.very good day. I pulled the tune out of the ECU I made notes on the settings and reinstalled it. It worked but it did not log like I wanted. The car started and ran fine, I think. I will know for sure at the Sports. Pulled the tune back out and tried and tried to get it to log like I wanted. After what seemed like a short eternity I found an important bread crum on the computer screen “unsaved”, I hit “save” and the logging did as I think I wanted after I reinstalled the tune. Then I spent the rest of the day studying the Holley system.
I don’t know what is the best way to learn EFI installation and tuning. Never having to work with computers really put me behind in technical development. I went to David Page’s FAST two day school and still think it was money well spent. On Saturday we all got to adjust some stuff on the dyno mule. But if I would have asked a question every time I needed a question answered we would have still been on chapter 3. For me it was better the second time because the words had meaning. I’m armed but not very dangerous and may never be, but l’m not hesitant anymore. Now the only question is What will make it better? |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Put a different tune it and it didn’t like it at all, it fouled the plugs. 16 of them
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
With the help of my phone camera I was able to see what was way different in the information between the two tunes. Some information was fat fingered and some switches were turned on that did not need to be activated.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo is starting to act like a well behaved race car sometimes. FI is a lot like having a child. A child will let you know that they are not happy and want something to make it happy.
We lost in round one of eliminations but we ran dead on with a 3. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo ain’t exactly printing tickets but it’s at least in the same Area Code.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Working on the stuff under the hood to make more power. We made more power and now we have to figure out how to hook it consistently. We will be busy until Indy and beyond. We are not ready to complain about the track we have work to do. We have to be the one going down the track and our opponent might have traction issues.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Very slow week for me. I had cancers removed from my nose. Next day one eye swollen shut and the other one was only a slit. Chris had to drive me to Jerry Newsome’s house to help load the Jerry’s Challenger. Both eyes are open now. Doing breaks and bearings on trailer before next race.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I feel kind of foolish having to do this to Dumbo, I found out that I was breaking the rules on fuel check. After a run I would dip the cup in the tank to get a fuel sample. Travis told me that the sample had to be taken from under the hood. It will be fixed tomorrow now that I have my new valve and an adapter to mount the valve and fuel pressure sender in the fuel system. Also we will be moving some weight around to try to get the car to leave and not spin when it crosses the bald spots.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Four wheel scale day.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry, FI cars have the rule of sixty. If your older than sixty you shouldn't be trying to figure it out. Can you put a carb on it? See you Labor Day weekend. BP
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Now you tell me. Thanks for the smile this morning.
The best thing about my Dodge is working on it to make it completive. We are so slow that I can't complain about the other cars in the class having an unfair advantage. Like they say "If your not the lead dog the view never changes" I'm off to the shop to find some parts in some bar stock. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We will load up today and travel to Indy points race tomorrow T&T Thursday. Rain rain stay away!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Well we will see if I helped or hurt the car this week. I did make it legal for fuel check. My black eyes are almost gone from the surgery on my nose. Also installed chiller fittings in the cooling system and a larger fan. Baby steps.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Santa Claws came this weekend. I am now the proud owner of my own ECU. Now I need a backup unit. Thanks so much for letting me use your spare ECU.
We made some progress on going A to B. Six runs within .016 in 60' from morning to HOT afternoon. I even had Patsy filming my burn out and the launch. I'm changing converters to see if I can get Dumbo a little quicker in 60'. I need to add a little weight to help the balance of the car and make it fit the Class. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We had a family meeting yesterday on why Dumbo is such a slug that spins.
We viewed the runs from Indy. Chris asked the obvious question, have I adjusted on the front shocks to loosen them up. To let the car transfer weight quicker. NO, I felt really stupid that I didn’t do the simple thing first. The good old K.I.S.S. Method. I will try the local track and see what my different converter reacts. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
BELLE ROSE, La. - Final order after Friday's qualifying in Stock Eliminator at the South Central National Open, Cajun Classic: November 23, 2020,
#2 383 FS/D Larry Hill, Hickory KY, '15 Challenger 9.332 10.60 -1.268 What's so much different today? |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
It would not pass fuel check, to much LA. Hot Sauce. But Frank if you do find out please share because we can not get back to that performance.
The weather that day is what everybody dreams about. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry,
I feel your pain, but I'm very confident you will figure it out. All the best, Frank |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Testing at BG today.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
What a day. We leave the house at 5.20am to get to BG by 9.00am testing is from 10 to 6. First stop 10 miles down the road is for diesel. Start one pump OK start second pump not OK the hose falls out and covers my pants and shoes in #2 Diesel. I can't think of anything more manly than taking your pants, shoes and socks off at the truck stop fuel island, but I did.
Long story short, go home get cleaned up hop back in the truck, motor home, and have a good day testing with my son and the help of many. Return home at 9.30 pm just completely beat. What a great day we had! |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo put a smile on my face today. Then the sun came out and real hot and made the smile a frown. Spun hard round two. Two stick stock cars F/S and G/S got real loose down track right in front of us round two. We both thought the track crew would stop us and inspect the track, but not so.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Off topic but the motor home refrigerator just died. I worked fine at BG last weekend. Never a dull moment racing!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Only one more fuel filter to check then we load up for
BG and Indy. We are looking forward to seeing friends and foes. Foes are friends that are just in the other lane. |

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Frank we always try to be a player for class at Indy. Been number one a few times at Indy then got tore down and passed tear down. It’s someone else’s turn to be at the top of the heap. I always tip my hat to anyone that is smart enough and works smart enough to be number One at Indy.
We are so happy that Dumbo is wanting to be a quick elephant. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
It’s not related to the build but another bump in the road got us. The motor home generator stoped running some time during round one of Super Stock. We got beat first round and came home. Today we’re going to see if we can get enough stuff working to get to Indy. Just another day at the office. My elephant doesn’t like the heat.
Almost forgot I had to put Stocker stuff back on Dumbo for Indy. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Well tomorrow is the big day a lot of us live for, Class at The U S Nationals. According to the entry list it’s three COPO and Dumbo. Win or lose it will be fun.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Kinda nervous it’s Q1 at Indy we want to do good and have a chance for class. This will be Dumbo first Indy. More later……..
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Maybe Dumbo's first, but not yours. Just do your deal, and remember to have fun - after all, that's the idea, right?
