unfortunately won't even take this kind of work. Yes, very well equipped and I'm very lucky to have this opportunity. Unfortunately between school and work Autumn hasn't been able to be involved much in this process. |

Re: H-I-J '76 Nova re-fit.
Well, good news and bad news. The good news is the crankshaft guy will be ok... the bad news, he had a what he thought was a heart attack while grinding the crank and has been in the hospital since Tuesday. Seriously you can't make this stuff up! Also, the spring cups I have are going to need some serious machining to fit. Did work on the rods today to start measuring bearing clearance.

I think this would be a good jumping off point for head flow on a 882 casting @ 28 inches 4.060 bore

Two sets of spring seats neither is close. Thank you Comp for putting the wrong set in the right box!

Stout heart, Todd and Autumn!:D
Back in the day we used to say, "IF it doesn't fit and it isn't on time and it costs too much it must be race car parts" and evidently the people side of the equation is pretty much the same. Keep on keepin' on and it will work out. Grab adversity by the scruff of the neck and beat him to death with a handful of the details properly addressed! Regards, HB2:) |
Re: H-I-J '76 Nova re-fit.
I have a crankshaft in my hands, I also have a set of spring seats that will take the least machining.

Re: H-I-J '76 Nova re-fit.
Wow this is dragging on! I just move slow because I don't trust I'm doing everything right so I ask a bunch of questions. Anyhow, checking bearing clearance, assembling pistons and rods, starting spring seat machining. I asked PAC what everyone was doing for the 1409x spring install in these heads, he said "although we wouldn't recommend it, most are just throwing them in the head with no spring seat or cup". I just don't know how you guys that build your own engines can possibly do this without a machine shop at your house. Back to it tomorrow, at least for a couple hours.

Re: H-I-J '76 Nova re-fit.
Not much done today, Main bores are slightly off so I ordered a set of main studs and I'll have to align hone it. Won't happen till Monday.

Re: H-I-J '76 Nova re-fit.
Test fitting wheels before mounting, just a LITTLE close on the left side shock mount.

Dang. Is it as close as it looks? Remove a couple of threads?

Is that a urethane bushing that nut is being tightened down against? Doesn't seem like a good idea.

When are we going to have some dyno data?

It is align honed and the mains all look good now, so at least I feel like we can move forward until the next issue pops up. |

Back out of the tank for the second time, rings are on the pistons, time to start assembly.

My dad used to tell me "the harder they fight the sweeter they will be when done." We know your Nova looks great and bet it will run strong. Thanks again for taking us along on your journey.

Todd, it's been obvious by the intensity you've had on this build that you like "Gitten 'er done".
I'm sure you're more than aware that engines can take time, and Murphy's Law can be the general culprit. In my own case, I find that everyday life pushes me hard. When I'm in my garage, I slow down and enjoy. BTW, I'm jealous of you; that's a great shop to build an engine in! lol |

Scraper and windage tray are on for the last time, oil pump is on, cam is in and degreed, checking fit on the valley tray and breathers. Second set of rockers are here.

Re: H-I-J '76 Nova re-fit.
Stayed at work late and got the rear rims done, since there's no polish or chrome anywhere this is what we went with. Before and after, what you think?
