Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephanta
In mixing and matching the bearing shells the SOT (Stupid Oldman Trick) bit me in the butt. Old folks should not try to do any work in their head, there is no room, it is full of useless information. Long story short I put the wrong shells in the caps and the clearances were way off. After disassembling I miked the shells and replaced thick ones with thinner ones and everything looks like it might work. We will know on dyno day.
Thanks Mr JR and Mr Byrd |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The Total Seal Ring Grinder was my Christmas, Birthday, and Anniversary gift all rolled into one. Talk about a thoughtful wife. The Total Seal piece is very predictable. If you need another .005" to make target on your ring gap it will do it. It does a good job on on the oil rails too but I can not be heavy handed.
Back to work |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Rings are done, I think. I still may have to adjust pull on the oil rails. So far everything has been coming in the shop just in time. Its been fun working on some different aspects of trying to go fast, but I still have more questions than answers.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
After checking the top ring it the smaller ring compressor it showed that the ends were butted against each other SOOooooo
I am having to make a ring compressor because the one I ordered got delayed in shipping. Thanks Fed X. I did not have enough material to make a real one just enough to install the piston with the oil ring to check drag. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I got a morning email around 10:30 am or so it stated the package will be delivered by 1:30 pm. We get a different email now stating delivery by end of day. I would guess the ability for fictional writing would be paramount for the interviewing process for a customer service at FedX. It is 5:30 pm and no package today but it was promised yesterday Friday. But what I made worked. The hard part was picking up the angel of the taper, based on the compound it's close to 4.xx degrees. I feel just like Dumbo, working for peanuts.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Got my new expanders from Mahle. It helped the oil ring pull.

Paul I’m not trying to be evasive but that information is with Jeff Taylor Performance in Sellersburg In. Some things I prefer not to know. The reason being, if I don't know some proprietary information and for some reason it gets known it could not come from me.
On ring pull are you curious about RB or Gen 3? Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I believe all the parts are here. It’s all on me now. |

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Best I can remember for the RB is using an old fish scale that had a needle it was about 10 to 12 lbs. Once something worked I would reuse the the oil ring in the next setup. The Gen three stuff I haven?t had much success on oil control. I?m trying something different this build.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I got to use a Buxton valve spring checker, Wow was it nice. A read out in thousands of an inch and lbs of force and a printout of each spring. Put in coil bind clearance and valve lash and it shows installed height. A really nice tool and it?s easy to use.
It?s almost 5:00 am so I better get to work. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Early birds get the Wally.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Taking a break. The block had its final cleaning. Cam bearings are installed. Sound track from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show " is playing, all is good! Solvent tank cleaned and refilled with fresh solvent. Supper tonight at the Fancy Farm picnic, where everything is home made and all proceeds go to the church.
Back to work New cam turns in the bearings, another good day of racing. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Fish fry?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Tons of barbecue pork, mutton, and chicken and all the fixings ice tea included. This year was the 144th annual. We did not go, Patsy has a tough time standing in line. The fish was Friday.
Time to go to work. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I think now we have a better than a coin flip chance to make Indy. The cam shaft passed my tech check with the new pushrods. New ring compressor worked well the anodized ones stop the aluminum shavings from getting into the engine. Running a little low on Luberplate 105 but we will make it. Crank and Camshaft end play is right in the center of spec.
A big tip of the cap to Militia products timing gear set it made the process of installing center line so much faster and very accurate. Another good day of racing |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
SOT forgot to mark off stuff that was torqued on my list. Spent most of the morning dissembling only to find out it was torqued to spec and I forgot to check it off. Now I know.
And for my next SOT, drum roll please....................... |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Get yourself a red marker - when you torque something, mark it.
Takes the remembering out of the equation. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I now have my springs assigned. For me it took two sets of springs and a few spring shims to get close to what was the target height. Most of the springs used fell under the bell curve. The PAC Springs micrometer was dead on. Its 20 TPI so it adjust fast. I should start loading real parts in the engine
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I awakened, you can bet the farm I was not going to use “woke”, and decided to bite the bullet and make custom spring locators, cups out of commercial parts. No shims, I like that

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Lost the day being a Grandfather. Oldest granddaughter leaving for college middle of next week and her Honda won’t start. Long story short I had to put a starter on the Honda. It used up most of the day finding parts and installation. Family First.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Lost? Larry that was a big win light for Grandpa!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
All the hole have something in them and torqued. Sheet metal day today.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
With a little luck I should be close to finishing today. FedX is just terrible, I know I sound like Charles Barkley. I?ll leave it at that.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dyno day is Monday 9/19/24. I still have a lot to do but I?ll be there.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Will you be attending Bowling Green if Monday is a success?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Up and at?em today trying to get to the dyno. It?s been a long last two days and today looks the same. Got to love this game.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
And only 235 miles to go be for I sleep. And I need to eat something.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Be careful Larry, my thoughts are with you. Rest, eat and hydrate well.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I?m at Jeff Taylor Performance at 7:45 am. Monday. I made it with hours to spare, 5 1/2 I think. They?re installing now. Keep your fingers crossed. I have to admit it I?m enjoying sitting and watching there progress.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
My poor attention to detail almost cost me a failure. But we got lucky and found the problem. It made decent power and the engine ran through the rpm range smoothly. Lots of NHRA Class stuff being worked on in the JTP shop.
There is a list of people that were kind enough to help me reach our goals, but that will have to come later. Now we have to get ready to race. BG and Indy. Got to get to work. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Engine is in car and being hooked up. It takes me more time to do stuff when I?m dead tired. This is cutting it to close, it?s almost not to much fun.

I?m working on my second cup of ambition as I type this. It should be a good day.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
It was a good day. Only problem was finding the little things that I promised myself I?d fix next time the car was down. A lot of them are fixed and it probably won?t go any faster but ease of assembly will be better next time.
Going to the dyno generates a few problems with sensors being different for the dyno. Then I have to pick up the changes and put it back together to race. I think next time I?ll make some some wiring harness?s with duel plugs to accommodate the dyno stuff. At the dyno I let the professionals do there thing while do mundane stuff like adjust valves and bring donuts, not just any donuts but donuts from Nord?s. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Tap , tap , tap. It's 8:00 am and we need our update! Is it ready yet?

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
After a test drive I decided to enter D3 BG points race and I'm so computer challenged I could not do it.
Got it done our Division Director sent me a link. Had another good racing. |
