You may want to consider a C5 core. It's a later version of the C4 with an improved case. The band adjusters are metric, I believe, with fine threads. It also has better fluid passages. You would need to change the bell housing to a C4 housing since the converters are different. But, they are nice transmissions, and worth a look. I believe that everything else in them is C4 (I can double check for you).

Some builders prefer the C4 by default because from what I can gather they are just used to building them. But, again, there's really no difference between a C4 and C5 other than some case improvements. From what I see the C5 seems to be a better transmission. I'm building a K/SA for my son, and will be using one.

Follow up: There may be some other differences. Going out for the day, but I'll take a closer look when I get back. Nevertheless, you should look into them.

C5's have a deeper bellhousing due to the deeper lock up converter they used, but have a improved oiling system that is a plus. The valve body is unique and is usually traded out for a C-4 valve body. Front band adjuster is a fine thread that is a 2:1 ratio to a stock C-4 course thread so you have to double your band clearance turns to 3 turns instead of the usual 1 1/2 turns. They are good cores to use if you swap the bellhousing for a C-4.

Not to take this thread off topic... Question,

What years and models was the C5 trans used ? Also, any visual markings or way to indentify them once removed from the vehicle? I would like to have a couple of good cores under the bench just in case.....

Thanks ,

May be unrelated, but I seem to remember reading at one time Ford used, or was planning to use a sensor running off either the flywheel or rear crank flange to read a signal from. Possibly that is what that hole was for, acsess for a sensor?

I need to purchase a flexplate and have noticed two different configurations for a C4...one with a single step and the other with a dual step. What/why the difference and which do I need?
