Re: Lost Drag Strips

Does anyone have pictures or history on Seminole Dragstrip west of Tallahassee, FL on SR20? My parents live in Panama City, FL and I remember driving by this old closed track about 10 years ago. It is basically all there including the old tower. I never hear of any old stories regarding this track and I know that there has to be someone out there that can share some info on this track.

The project is still alive and well, Adger, with the same four core members. It has taken up a substantial portion of our lives and is still eating up the equivalent of another full-time job in hours per week.

Our project is substantially different than any before it and, quite frankly, is far beyond a paperback book as a final product. Our goal is not neccessarily to sell books but, rather, to get a copy of our work in the National Archives/Library of Congress for use as a research tool for future generations...and we're not talking for the next fifty years; we're talking five hundred years.

If we do sell the finished product, I can promise you it will be very expensive. However, it will aslo be positively monstrous in size...for whatever that's worth.

Bret,
Thanks for the update. I sure did enjoy working on that with you guys.
I can understand why the "Work In Progress" sign is hanging out. There is alot of history out there to be documented. I hope to get to see your finished product some day.

Did you folks include the old Brooksville Florida Drag Strip?

Know this is about Georgia drag strips, but it goes back in the 60's. Lots and lots of pictures and names of folks no longer here. The site is closed, but still there on the net......frankchastain

Steve1118...not sure how to get to your pictures. Have you seen the 2 home movies
on YouTube of Peterson? Not very good quality...but the PA2 version...which has the
Jungle Jim Nova and Schartman FC's...that movie looks an awful lot like PID.

Maybe you could take a peek? I never had the chance to go to Altoona or PID back
in the day...but stopped by once at PID after it closed...

Anyone remember Green Pine?, a small 1/8th mile track somewhere in central or
western PA?

Any better idea where it might have been? I live near New Castle PA, just on the Ohio line, roughly halfway between Erie and the WV line. Never heard of a Green Pine (but, then again, I'm only 32). I remember, hearing of, at least, Skyline (New Castle), Sunset (Mercer) in far west PA, plus PID, Keystone (now Pittsburgh Raceway Park) and New Bethlahem and Peterson Memorial.

I found through searching that Green Pine Dragway sits on the side of the mountain South of Williamsport, PA. - up in the woods, in the Allenwood area. A 'short' Circle Track was at the end of Reach Road, and it sounds like the drag strip was near it. They claim that the 1/8 track is still there.

Steve,
Were you able to drive up to it?
Did you drive or walk the track?
Are there any buildings or stands left?

Glenn, I did drive on the track, but I have a 4X4 Suburban. A regular car might not make it over a small berm that you have to drive over from Rt. 34. The property was operated as a landscape nursery for many years and there are building remnants from that business. No stands or buildings are left that I could see, although the trees might be hiding a foundation or pile of debris.

Thanks for the reply Steve, maybe it's an illusion, but the track appears to be pretty narrow.

Found some photos of that track on the HAMB site...from the guy restoring the
'55 Chevy gasser called the "Bad Banana"....think he had some Altoona photos
too....

Still can't get the photos Steve1118 put here of Altoona...anybody see them?

Guess that's the place...found a guy on another site that was there for THAT match
race at Peterson....probably 1969?

Re: Lost Drag Strips

I took a lot of the home movies, Tom Taylor took the others. None of them are posted on youtube.

The first Home Movies of Peterson I took were at a Tom Reese vs Tom Raley T/F match race sometime in 1966. Bob Kaiser, the future world champ, was there with a wedge 63 Plymouth sponsored by Williamsport Auto Sales.

I'll try to reload the pics.

Pit Pass from Tri-City. Did the Div 3 points meet in the mid 70's. If I remember right, wasn't that place located next to an Airport? I recall some drag strip in Michigan, we got woke up by a jet preparing to take off at about 5 in the morning! Probably didn't help that we sat up till about 1 or 2 in the morning drinking and bs'ing with some other guys in line. One thing I do recall, it was a long drive up AND back from central Indiana.

Right now there are still over a dozen tracks operating on a week-end in North Carolilna

Adding to your NC list are East Bend and are they still running at Wilkesboro????

Does anyone remember Windsor Dragway - Windsor, ON, Canada?

In it's day they hosted many major events and had the top pro drivers attend.

"Progress" shut it down. So sad.
