I forgot to take a photo of the front bumper showing all the surface rust and dents. The rust and chrome was ground and sanded off and epoxy primed. Had to do a little bodywork

Epoxy primed again

Sanded

Block sanded with 180 and epoxy primed black so I could see if there were any imperfections

The rear bumper needs a lot of work

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps4ce8f170.jpg

After straighten, welding and a lot of grinding and sanding I sprayed at least 3 coats of SPI epoxy and started the bodywork

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps87930ab6.jpg

After a few times of block sanding and priming I sprayed 3 coats of SPI Red the next day 3 coats of SPI Universal clear

So do I I'm in the middle of building a 1968 Mustang restomod coupe painted SPI red. SPI red has no orange tint just a solid red.

Finally saw the published article on the wiring. Way slick interior.

Brian made patterns of all the interior trim panels out of poster board

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps0fe578d6.jpg

The patterns were sent to Scott Rod Fabrications in Toledo Ohio and were made in aluminum.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps685e9963.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7de847b7.jpg

NHRA requires the interior trim panels to have upholstery on them so I had Mike at Mike's Tops in Port Richey cover them in cloth.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps8c905cd3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps428411cb.jpg

Mike also covered the rear seat area with carpet. It looks a lot better in person

Wish my junk would turn out that nice. Did you put any flat panels on the floor before carpeting the rear area, or just form/glue the carpet on the factory floor pan?

It was just glued to the factory floor.

Great Build Rusty, I hope mine turns out as good as yours. A quick note that your shoulder straps are just wrapped around the pipe behind the seat, I think that they have to be mounted so then will not slide from side to side. Tom

Re: 1967 Fairlane Super Stock

After a lot of thinking and studying the NHRA classification guide I have decided to build a 302 from a 1968 Cougar and race it in GT/LA. It is rated at 230 hp and I can run aftermarket aluminum heads along with the same Quick Fuel carb that is the legal replacement for a 390 or 428CJ. This will be new for me because I only have experience with the FE motors. I believe it will be a lot cheaper to build than an FE and very competitive.

I would check the carb again. I think it takes the small carb.

I checked with NHRA and they said it was legal on the 230 HP 302 in the 1968 Cougar. It came with the same size Holley as the 390 so it is legal. I also found out I can't run the hood unless the engine has ram air.

Re: 1967 Fairlane Super Stock

I think the acceptable Quick Fuel carb is the SSR-585-VS.

The replacement carb for the Holley on the 390 is SSR-780-VS. The Holley on the 230 hp 1968 Cougar is the same size as the 390 Holley so it is a legal replacement according to the email I got from NHRA.

Dave Turner 01-20-2015 12:50 AM

Re: 1967 Fairlane Super Stock

An email from NHRA should be enough documentation to get you by..... just seems odd that the same size carb is approved for use on displacements from 302 to 428 cu. In.

HP Disp C.R. Ind. Make Model/Transmission Manifold R.R. Lifter Head cc Notes

325 390 10.5 1-4 Ford C8OF-C/SM, D/AUTO C8AE-A,D 1.73 H 63.50 12

15 – 1563x1563/1250x1313

Sorry its bunched up but this is copied from the Engine Blueprint Guide. The bold sizes, straight from my Holley book are for a "600" cfm carb. The "780" was used on the 335 HP 428 ci in the Mustang, Fairlane & Cougar. The last update in that year was #16 for an ALT Manifold.

Re: 1967 Fairlane Super Stock

Rusty -
Defintiely get that cleared up from NHRA Tech Department. Reading the tech specs and the carb list in the approved products document, it is clear to me that the carb is a ~600 cfm Holley, not a ~780 cfm. The footnote on the 1968 Ford Tech Bulletin says the carb spec is 1.563"x1.563" throttle bores and 1.250"x1.313" venturis and the same specs are listed for a 390. There is no 780 size carb listed for a 390 in 1968. The 1966 and 1967 390 GT engines are allowed the 780 carb as a replacement, but not any other years.

When you ask for clarification from NHRA, note to them that the Approved Products document has a note beside the Quick Fuel SSR-585-VS carb that says it replaces the Holley 3245 and 3806 carbs, neither of which is listed in the Tech Specs for the 1968 Ford 302-230hp engine. While the original carb has the same throttle bore and venturi dimensions, their technical document does not specifically state that the QF carb is a legal replacement. That needs to be verified.

Just for comparison, The 780 measurements.

Re: 1967 Fairlane Super Stock

When I was researching the Holley listed for the 68 Cougar 302/230 I found this quote from Alex Denysenko (Moneymaker) on another board:

"Late Mercury Cougars (Dan Gurney and GT editions) used a R4069 600 cfm 4150 center pivot float Holley. Looks just like a 390 GT carb. (the real one that is, not the one that NHRA allows lol)"

In terms of specs, the QF 585 can replace it, but I don't have anything official on that.

The only factory Holley on a 68 Mustang 302 was the Shelby GT350 which is missing from the Stock Car Guide. It's S8MS 9510-C Holley List No. 4234. The carb is rated at 600 CFM. It was offered as a replacement on the GT350 after May 1968 when it was emission certified. You could get an aluminum manifold on that car, too.

Not listed...

We have been very busy in the shop and I have not had time to work on this project.

We installed a TCI shifter with a custom mount made by my son Brian and Lokar power cut off attached to the Flaming River unit in the trunk.

Thanks Tommy.

This was after the Winternationals in 1972 where I won SS/GA class and broke out on the brakes first round of eliminations. I stayed out there 5 weeks and raced at Bakersfield and Las Vegas and made one run at Orange County with an 11.18 ET on a 11.43 record. Alex Walordy was doing a story that come out in Rodder and Super Stock magazine Sept. 1972. In that photo I was on top of I-10 trying to get the wheels off the ground for the magazine story. That photo did appear in the magazine and again in Mustangs & Fords magazine in December 2007.
