Will get it done as quick as possible... i figure another 1k will get me to better than before...as long as piston didnt get hurt, or worse...

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Sorry to hear...at least the motors still in one piece. How much valve-to-piston clearance did you have? -Al

Bummer, Brent. If you need anything, let me know. Are all the keepers intact?

brent flynn 04-14-2014 05:03 PM

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Yeah, Bob, i had valve cover off at the track, and keepers all looked normal... gonna rip intake and valley cover off tonight...will keep you posted...

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Removed heads, #4 exh valve bent, as suspected... only went to 5700-5800.
Pulling shortblock tonight, to check #4 bearing, and make sure its not passing anything, as the filter was pretty clean, but, lifters already showing wear. Cam still looks fair. Also alot easier to degree cam, and i have a pan bolt, along passenger side, that is leaking a bit...( a first for me) ...Chris at Comp is gonna be working on a new grind for me, and we will figure out springs and lifters...Hope to be ready for testing, before Joliet.... fingers crossed...Piston had very small spot on it...

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

It's not lookin' good for the home team.... I took the shortblock out of the car, removed pan, checked a couple bearings, and its obvious that ive had alot of material go through the oil system... the filter wasnt showing alot.... crank will get by with a polish... but looks like i will need to start over, as i will have to give block another cleaning, and probably a touch up on the hone, even though the cylinders look fine... Apparently, Rich(Hand Over Fist) and I , arent supposed to get down the track , this season...

Hey Bob! I dropped the cd off, couldnt find you... Came back a little later, and you were gone... !2.06 in that wind, was pretty good! How did you end up doing?

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Thanks again Brent. Got the sailboat out of the wind and turned 11.80 Sat. morn, then blew the tires off in elims. I think there was stuff on the track because it never did that before at an NHRA track. Bob M.

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Dropped heads off at machine shop yesterday... bearings in shortblock all look good...endplay still at .008... New cam should be in, this week. Gotta order lifters. Need to clean oil pump and wash shortblock out, to make sure no material floating around... had a little bit in filter, no brass... Then, it'll be ready to back the other direction... not sure if it was the guide or not, that caused the problem...but, it'll be back, stronger and faster than before!

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Hope it turns out well, Brent. Going to Chi-town?

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Im gonna try to have it ready for Joliet... I cleaned oil pump, and reinstalled... also, finished cleaning pan and pan rails... may glue the crank scraper on tomorrow night...Sending my cam/lifters to get coated, soon as they come in...gonna lash .003-.005 this time... goin with VMAX Rhodes with the oil passage down the side... Gonna talk to machinist tomorrow, and see what he says about guides... he said he would probably loosen exhaust guides...im thinkin he may have set them a tad tight...i still dont believe that 3/8 turn preload was the problem, if it were, more of them woulda tagged, you would think...you goin to Joliet, Bob?

brent flynn 05-06-2014 10:24 PM

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Got pump all checked and cleaned, scraper back on...Waiting on heads...Cam should be here tomorrow/THursday... all thats left is gaskets, and lifters... shouldnt be too long now...3-4wks, it should be fired up again...

Lookin' good, Brent. Not going to Joliet. Scattered the motor on the '62 so need some time to recoup. Lemans is still hanging in there. Bob

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Dang Bob....what happened?

bob3240 05-07-2014 06:05 PM

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Looks like a lack of oil at high rpm, worse won I've seen for a Pontiac. Broke the whole section of camshaft out, ripped the rod out of the piston, laying all twisted up in the pan; broke the block also.

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Sorry to hear, Bob...too bad they wont up the bore to +.090...then you could run a .030 400 block... cant imagine what happened? how many passes on this engine?

bob3240 05-08-2014 09:37 AM

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Way to go Brent! Might be a good idea to take lifters apart and check for debris. Mine were full of it on a motor that spun a brg. By the way, most excellent CD. You guys rock! Bob M

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Just out of curiosity, i went to look at IHRA indexes for F/SA... its 12.15/7.80
Heck , my 1st run, i was almost .5 under at the 1/8...and i was out of the gas, before i even got there..as you can tell by the mph... Wish NHRA indexes werent so stiff!

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...

Well, almost ready to go back into the car... Valves set to '0' , Cam in @ 105*, new Comp 251/256* , nitrided... Coated lifters and cam... Put oil pan on last night, as well as front cover... Gonna finish it up tomorrow eve, and set it in the car Saturday or Sunday... will have it running and broken in , probably the following weekend... Im hoping to hold it to the floor, all the way to the 1320, this time
