Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Studs have a different clamping force than bolts. That is why they are used under higher cylinder pressures. Also they will cause cylinder roundness issues if they weren't used to hone it. A bracket motor you may never see the difference, a stocker motor on the other hand you.....

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Hey guys,
Another long break. Took a long time to get the heads and intake back from the machinist(I really don't think they enjoy us stockers! haha) however we are pretty happy with our turn out. Cam is installed and sitting at .045" intake and .110" exhaust for piston to valve clearance. For our first build of this type whats your thoughts on the intake clearance? Not looking to break any records and will have a 1000 other bugs to worry about but we feel it is just about right. Assembled below and we should be seeing this sitting in the car in the next few days! https://i.postimg.cc/J4998qPj/Engine.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Hkrvr7Pd/Engine2.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/zvmHF4qx/Engine3.jpghttps://i.postimg.cc/jdxP30z1/Engine4.jpghttps://i.postimg.cc/zX2bdLDL/Engine5.jpg |

Glenn,
Sorry left out some key enough. We did retard the cam two degrees and it gained us about .007” on the intake clearance. Putting us at the .045” mentioned above. |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Alright!!!
Really big week for my dad as he was able to get the engine set in place. Bellhousing, clutch, throwout bearing, starter, radiator hoses, modifications to fit the clutch fork, etc. done. Pretty monumental for us to see the engine in place, this obviously adds fuel to the fire. I however made the move to Columbia, South Carolina  My wife is a dentist in the Army and will be stationed at Fort Jackson for the time being. I will still be making it back for every race I can!! Specially Division 5. However a lot of the progress will be in my dad's hands as we look to get him back in the driver seat!!! https://i.postimg.cc/RCGp9YSF/engineuptop.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/50BGwNWq/enginetop.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/G2x747vX/bell.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/HkMtJvgb/clutch1.jpg |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Congrats on the build, you should RE READ the advice Glenn B. gave you,…if this is a dish combo ,45 thou is not enough clearance. I would invest in a soft touch for the water…down the road you might consider custom head gaskets for more valve clearance…just trying to save you guys some $$ and aggravation ….

My experience tells me this fuel pump won't be up for the job on an 11 sec. stick shift Q-Jet car. Unless your test track is across the street, it costs a bunch to go out there for the first time and find a problem such as this. Good luck |

Do you have an at minimum size/suggestion you would go with? |

I don't like the idea of 4 degrees to be honest. Also what's the motive behind the silicone radiator hose? |

The vane type pumps are rather old school but sometimes will work with faster Holley equipped cars. I don't keep up with the latest pumps but I would probably look at Aeromotive stuff that's used in Stock without a return system. Maybe SS Div 6 will see this ...He'll know what racers are using today. |

Yes MSD grid. With the 3 step wired up. |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
A good rule of thumb for a 11 second stocker fuel system. Unplug fuel line at carb, using a stop watch and a one gallon jug …see how many seconds it takes to fill the jug. …you need to be in the ballpark of 25 - 30 seconds …
MINIMUM. ….. |

One Holley Blue pump works fine on my 464 Cu in. Buick Q jet car.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Finally!
We have a running car... Dad tried making a push to get it to a local track this weekend but as always with these builds final fitment on a few items pushed it out another week or two. We have a few items to tie up, wiring to clean up, make 20 passes up and down the driveway :D and then we will be at a track near you! https://youtube.com/shorts/aqskc9Dy3Ck |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Curious what everyone thinks will be a good baseline for timing? I'm assuming this SBC will like a lot but 38 degrees seem like a good baseline?
Eventually I will tune a 2 degree retard into fourth gear but need to see how the grid reacts to a manual and if there is much an rpm drop to tell when it is changing gears. |
Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift
Hey Guys!
Dad was able to get the car to the track last week. You will see 35 years of rust for my old man behind the driver seat and a lot of suspension bugs to work on. The best pass he made was 13.42 @ 102mph. We have the rev limiter set at 6400(very conservative for gear swap misses), leaving at 5000, and set at 42 degrees of timing. First thing on the list will be springs across the board. Fronts are cut springs but you can see now with the engine in place it sits to low. Back we are not getting any kind of squatting with the Calvert shocks set on one of the lowest settings. Overall happy with the start! https://youtu.be/IOifBOCgddk |
