Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
In this build I tried some Proform tools: the electric ring filer and the 4.125 ring compressor. Both were POS's. The ring compressor was 4.126 to 4.132 not round and not going to work in a cylinder with very little chamfer @ 4.124 ID. Ring filer was so loose the indicator moved 008 to 010 just by turning it on. I did buy a AARP compressor that worked well
Break is over back to work. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry, can’t wait to see you, Patsy and the car at the track...I have gotten quite a few PM s regarding the stocker hood issue with mopars...
...so I will just ask away ?? Will this car have the correct hood on it...asking for a friend ..... |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The top of the car is red so we painted the hood to match. It looks like the correct hood. With some "Hillbilly engineering'' the hood will be wired shut. The cool part about the car is that when you touch the door handle the window roles down just a bit. And when it closed it roles up like magic. I sure hope the battery stays charged so I will be able to get out after a run. I think since it's a 2015 it will still be in warranty until after the election.
Oh ya tell your friend "Thanks for asking" |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry,
While others might worry about hoods 'n stuff....I just want to compliment you on that laser etching on the piston....nice touch. I would never have thought of that. LOL:D Glad you are enjoyin' the fun parts of making things happen.;) Best to you and yours, HB2:) Dissident |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Maybe it is a mistake but the pistons only varied .5g and I did not go after that. Top to bottom the parts were pretty good, some of them just didn't like each other. Assembling the heads was a real chore with big hands in tiny spaces. I bet the Ford folks have all kinds of fun with the four valve 302 -327

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Engine management hardware, I have an early TPI IAC with a late model adapter plug on it to interface with the ECM. Almost forgot the TPS, MAP, and the air temp sensors. All this stuff looks good on the computer screen but no one has any information about the part. I'm not trying to get the secret recipe for KFC, just what size thread, bolt spacing, or style plug.

What made you wanna retire the pink car ?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We lost a killer engine the first race on a Western swing in Ga. Cam failure, I was done. Found a car and bought it.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry, any chance Dumbo will be making a flight this weekend at Indy?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Still making parts like each other. Elephant is still very grounded. We are still looking for the magic feather or magic dust like Santa uses.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry, your doing a great, quality job and making good time on it! Hell, I've been working on my DP for 3 years and will be lucky to have it complete by the Fall Classic at Indy ( this year...I hope...maybe).
Can't wait to see your completed Drag Pak at the Track. I'll try not to drool on it. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Found a used topper for my truck so I can travel with my engine secluded, dry, and out of sight. Topper was born black but painted white, of course my truck is black. And so it goes.....
Everybody have a great Fourth Of July, and please remember the brave folks that made it happen! |

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I'm not finished with the engine yet, and have started a to do list on how to improve serviceable and methods on the next gen3 hemi build.
A funny thing happened when getting all the sensors in a pile to check fitment. The adapters will not work, I need ------32, but I ordered -----23, just another stupid old man trick. Oh well UPS likes me |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
This goes in the category of a fly in the ointment. I had to have my right wrist worked on requiring several stitches. So this will slow progress, just what the Dr. ordered.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry,
Any of those one-sided knife fights are never any fun!;) Heal up and get well soon, my friend! Best Regards, HB2:) Dissident |

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I'm so lucky to have Patsy as a wife and racing partner, she likes racing. She is not very mechanical but would almost take a Bullet to get to go to Indy.
Today will be lite duty day. Clean and put up tools. Make list of things to take and do at dyno. Install injectors and fuel rails. Plumb return lines to regulator and other stuff One head on, one to go! |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Go Patsy Go!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Patsy, did you get the other head on? Read yesterday only 1 was on.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Worked on the fuel rails to get clearance from the intake manifold. Got the correct adapter, -----32, for the IAC and it should work, I hope. Got to work on the air inlet to get the blades to open up all the way. I hate to leave any HP at the shop or the trailer. My friend George Widuch, pronounced VeeDoo, always said if you do a lot of things that cant hurt it will help. I still have a million things to do.
Thanks for the well wishes HB2 and Frank. How can I state this, Patsy is a supervision expert or so she claims. We do have fun and laugh with and at each other. Jeff, Bev Provost, of Al and Bev Provost, would have the head on in a mater of minutes and ready to fire. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I know what you are going through. RJ and i built our Cobra Jet from scratch. You will go through every emotion there is to say the least. The satisfaction when the car fires up for the first time makes it well worth it. There area few people who still build there cars from scratch and Mr Heath is one of them. We were use to working on older types of cars so the learning curve was pretty steep. Keep up the good work.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Today I'm off of the gal. of milk weight limit. The doctor said my wrist will let me know if I'm trying to do to much. First things first, get caught up on three days not doing much around our home.
I'm still waiting to here back from the air inlet folks on the fix, it's brand new, on how to get secondary to fully open. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The fix is on the way for the inlet. Pictures of the intake with all the "stuff"on it. I would have pictures with the air pan on it but it is a do it yourself custom fit. The air pan is a real quality piece. Patsy will post pic
and the book of Dumbo |

Getting closer!! Hope I have hood clearance!!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Wow! That looks awful tall. Cross your fingers.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I “heard” that they ran out of the correct hoods one day and the only thing they had left were some pro stock hoods from the Motown Missle and shipped the cars with those hoods. Just some I heard, or dreamed, I’ll check!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
You wont have any problem icing that intake.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I've been working on installing a CO2 fire suppression system in the hood.
The nozzles will be assigned to cool each intake runner. Just before pulling into the water hit the button, let the "smoke" clear. In and out of the water box, pull to the line with incoming air temp of less then 40* F. I don't think NHRA will like it........at all. If you dream up stuff like this in your sleep, you and I need professional help! LOL I need to check General Regulations to see if it's legal. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Bret I think the '14 302 NA CJ will be in a class above me. It is the small 392 not the 426

Larry, you are doing a great job on this build. I can't wait to see what numbers it will run. Good luck.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Frustration, I think I have everything in a pile to finish the engine and the car but not so. And so it goes......
