I believe that would be the late " Buford Heavy " Eric Duncan.

I'm pretty sure that the car was built for them. I have the strong impression that it's a Haas car but they may have gone to Bickel as he was pretty big in the IHRA right about then. At that time, business was still pretty good so all the manufacturers had deals in both the IHRA and NHRA. The Kirks had the Mopar deal. Directly behind them is the Konigshoefer (sp?) Thunderbird from Canada with a Quality Care deal. |

I did some checking, it seems that Doug Kirk sold his mountain motor Avenger to Larry Morgan...

Wisconsin Pro Stock racer Larry Peternel campaigned a very unique Chrysler Imperial back in the early 80s.

Jim Wick, another Wisconsin based racer, campaigned these Mopars throughout the midwest Pro Stock circuit.

I always liked the "off the wall" cars even though they were seldom competitive. The Gapp & Roush Taxi is about the only one I can think of that did very well. A neat pairing would have been the "Beyond Criticism" Cadillac Eldorado in the other lane, though I'm not sure if the cars were being raced at exactly the same time. The Eldo carried a bunch of gold plating. I saw it get wrecked heavily at Gateway with Ed Dixon at the controls and I'm thinking that was the end of it. As I remember, the car was based out of Florida by Global Industries or something like that. |

Re: 70's & 80's Pro Stockers
[QUOTE=Dan Bennett;358566]You had to admire Peternel's determination to race. The last few times I saw him, he had a GM F-body in a well used Chapparal trailer. The wheelie bars were two piece; he'd unbolt the back half so he could get the trailer door shut. Just about everytime I saw the guy race, he was absolutely a one man team. Others had crews all over the starting line, but Larry managed to get in the water, do his burnout, and stage properly all by himself.
Thanks Dan. Larry, as most who know him is one of the true innovators. He used a camper special converted ramp truck that was pretty trick. Really looked out of place with all the 18 wheelers. His main crew guys Paul and Steve are very sharp. It's shame they raced on a shoe string budget. Larry could use our thoughts and prayers right now. He just got released from Mayo in Rochester today and is far from out of the woods. |

Re: 70's & 80's Pro Stockers
From a post on Yellowbullet: Geremy Glass wrote "This is my dad's friend, Floyd Williams, testing out his car at his service shop.
He ran pro stock back in the 70s. He qualified 2nd to Bob Glidden at Indy one year. He raced the Williams/McEwen pinto. He was a legend in SE michigan. Im sure some members here remember him from detroit dragway, ubly, etc." http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...g?t=1227928038 In seeing this picture, it sure captures the 70's when many a car were built, wrenched, and tuned in gas stations, home garages, small shops, etc. and maybe even run up and down the street a time or two...very cool picture! |

This is a pic of the ex- Cotton Pony of Bunny Burkett, and I believe an ex- Vindicator of Drake Viscome. This was the Mr. Preston Pro Stock Pinto belonging to Preston Whitacre out of Winchester, VA. His son Patrick sent me this pic a while back. I think he said this car used a 427 Tunnel Port for power.

Too cool...
http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9...pontiac04b.jpg Now, all we need is a photo of Judd's Speed Shop 1970/71 Buick Gran Sport...err...I mean, Buick Skylark, Pro Stocker. Ah, here it is... http://imageshack.us/a/img191/5070/sspeedshop.jpg "Just a little history I found out about the Judd's pro stocker car. I know some people were asking what ever happened to it. Well, the motor is still in one piece and is explained to me exactly like how Tom explains it here http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.ph...light=judd%27s The person that bought the car he believes in around 1979 from the Judd's...well sort of didn't get the whole car. He does have the front fiberglass clip off it and the motor still together with everything how Tom explaines it. It never had the prostock or tunnel port heads nor 4-bolt block. When he wanted to buy the car the Judd's said it was so weak from the original acid dipping that if they lifted it, it would just crumble. They said they had the frame and body acid dipped but did not put paint on the underside and did not neutralize the acid, so it kept eating away. So they decided to sell the motor and hemi 4 speed and front clip to him. The rest was scrapped. So there you have it...no more car, but the original front clip and engine is still around." M68 |

Re: 70's & 80's Pro Stockers
Slightly off topic but, is there a link to any pics of the Reher Morrison Monza that they raced in 1976 ? I have seen the same 2 or 3 pics that are on the RM site, but I want more. Does anyone have any pics of the crashed Monza from Etown that year 1976 ? Any links to old magazine coverage of the Monza they started P/S in. I do already have the June 1976 Car Craft magazine ,still looking for more info ...
Thanks, Proud RMS fan and Monza drag racer. |
