Billy I don't kno how you are handleling donations, but Moneymaker RAcing is willing to donate free of charge a pair of Calvert Racing true 90/10 front shock for your Grand Prix, along with a good used Holley fuel pressure regulator. just let us know where to send the stuff if you want it and it will be on the way via Fed Ex

I guess that I should post an update! I ran a best of a 14.81 @ just under 89 MPH with a 1.91 60'. Considering the weather, I intentionally had the timing back and too much jet in it to be sure that it would go down the track. The weather looked a lot better than it really was as the barometer was quite low and the low temps made the DA look good.
The new converter worked better than I expected and I'm very happy with it. I do need to do some T+Ts to get my carb and timing right as running the index in good air just isn't going to cut it. I think there might be a tenth or two in the tune-up. After that, I may have to throw some money at it. I'm getting to the point that I really don't know where this whole project is going or where it should go so I'm open to suggestions! |

I think a lot of people would be interested in some on-going reports of the benefits of adding traditional race equipment. Such as light wheels vs. heavy wheels, suspension mods, headers, etc. Car Craft reader response to their project cars that were done in that manner was always high, so there is interest. I do realize that such an effort takes quite a lot of work, but more importantly time and desire. Maybe people on the forum would be willing to donate to such a project? For example, if somebody would like to see the benefit of adding roller rocker arms, they could donate to a fund or send you a set of rocker arms. You install them, report the differences here. They get the info, get their name added to the car, you get a better race car in the end. Just an idea. |

Iraceitall and Joe, my friends and I joked about "Under the Record for Under 5K" for the next project but I can't imagine this combo having that kind of potential. It's just too restricted.
Dwight, I have some "stuff" that I could throw at it above and beyond the budget. I like that idea. I would like to first spend a couple of weeks trying to max the car out as it sits though. I'm a one man band kinda guy so, I appreciate the offers but I'll pass on the help or donations. But hold that thought because something BIG just may be on the horizon! |

:cool::cool: Billy, this is without a doubt one of the coolest things going. It reminds me of when my friends and I would see what we could scrounge up in the way of parts to make our cars go faster on the cheap. The idea of under the record for under 5 grand is very cool. Why not keep making changes to the car and see how fast it will go? This car at a National event taking down the new factory cars would be the ultimate showdown. Good luck with this car and maybe an article done on this subject would be inspirational to many guys wanting to do this same thing. Not sure what magazine, a reference to Car Craft was brought up in an earlier response. I think that would be very cool. By the way, your name upside down on the car - PRICELESS.

Summer's here! From 600 ft DA at "The Grove" to my day at a T+T at "The Beav" where the good air this morning was 2750 ft and it got as bad as 3300 ft by mid afternoon.
"Dime Rocket" tip for the day, local racetrack run T+T days. What would you pay for a tenth in your new Stocker or SS car? 6 hour T+T cost me $40 and it was worth every dime! Just one quick thing about doing T+Ts, go with a plan of what and how you're going to test. If you think that you can go to NHRA meets and test or make changes then you are kidding yourself. I kinda knew when I went to "The Grove" last week that my tune-up wasn't right but I had an unknown converter in the car and, with the bad weather threatening to make it a one Q run and race deal, I wanted to know that the car would go down the track. It did but not very fast. Ancient history. The first pass, in the same state as it was last week, got me a 15.36 @84.61 MPH. That compared to a 14.81 @ 88.82 best last week. Not even the IHRA index, I've got my work cut out for me. I made 8 runs changing jets, timing, carb gaskets, a different carb and finally, my launch RPM. To make a long story short, it reacted to leaner jets(more so that the weather would require), more timing, taller carb gaskets and raising my starting line RPM. The carb had a pretty bad stumble that I didn't want to take the time to figure out today so it went back in the truck but it showed some promise. Simple tuning got the car from a 15.36@84.61 in 2750ft of air to a 15.22@85.68 in 3300ft of air. Still not a bad weather index runner but an improvement of almost a tenth and a half and a MPH for 40 bucks and some sweat. I'll take it. |

In summary:
If you drag race or want toon alimited and reasonable budget,than the b.n.r.c method as reflected in this on going post is the only practical and viable way to do so. The b.n.r.c. Approach provides a challenging and educational experience for both the entry level and experienced racer alike. Not withstanding the satisfaction and accomplishment that can accrue through this type of project. The "dime rocket" can be unusual and different which is part of the appeal.moreover,this type of machine can be used as a stock eliminator class race car and/or as a bracket catagory race car without the burdens and concerns of wearing out an expensive,sophisticated techno motor and transmission. This type of car can be maintained with out highly specialized parts and can be transported to the race track on a simple,open style trailer. While some may say that there are disadvantages to racing a "slow" car,i believe that given all of the variables involved in drag racing the possibility of going rounds and winning races cannot be discounted using this type of car. Further,given the overall investment of time and money the downsides are greatly reduced. In closing there remains some major considerations. And difficult questions to answer as they are basic and personal.-do you like and relate to this type of race car and is the performance range what you seek?. Run the numbers and search your motivations,the drag racing answer will come. |
