I've always just used a propane torch Dave. Heat the metal shells until the rubber starts to melt and you can easily punch them out with a hammer/drift...took me about 20 minutes for all four bushings. |

Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Here lately I've just been cleaning up the engine bay and going thru the mass of wiring. I have a bit of painting to do and I'm trying to time it with the prevailing weather...it needs to happen soon if it's going to happen this year. I do have the manual brake parts to install as well as a new aluminum radiator w/fans that I picked up for $149.
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psb16be29b.jpg I need to get my rings finished for the Camaro so I can begin putting it back together. It needs to be finished and out of the way before I can bring the 302 home and tear it down. |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Somehow managed to get some pieces painted today despite the cold...probably crack off like a M&M candy shell lol. If it turns out as good as I think it is I may end up painting the entire car...dammit.

Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Got the trunk area and engine bay touched up yesterday. I still have to yank that windshield washer bottle out of the fender.
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps9515ac6f.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps92470489.jpg This afternoon was a light day...all I did was mount the manual m/c and clean up the shop. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps9101efb5.jpg Here is the custom 3 gallon cell w/in-tank efi pump. Going to mount it high on a bracket which will extend out both sides for weight boxes. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psee149ffe.jpg New radiator fits fine despite the tweaked radiator support. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps93df6b94.jpg |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
A question for anyone who might know -
I have asked this question on some Mustang forums with no replies to date. When I removed the luggage rack and spoiler from the donor trunk lid I ran into a problem. The spoiler was attached to the lid with a screw at each end...no problem. The third brake light housing was attached to the lid with two long screws...problem is the spoiler sits on top of the housing preventing access to the screws. With the spoiler loose on both ends I pried some to try and separate the two pieces to no avail...finally just took a die grinder under the trunk lid and cut off the protruding screws to release it. I will need to figure out how this works in order to put all the pieces back on the newly painted lid. Maybe some adhesive was used between the bottom of the spoiler and top of the brake housing? Just looking for advice before I get heavy handed and break something. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps1380ed65.jpg |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
You're correct about the adhesive. There's a patch of black adhesive in the recess of the brake light that bonds to the bar. Use a heat gun and pry the two apart.
By the way, you can do away with the luggage rack and add a spoiler if you claim the car as a 1993. There is a special edition convertible for 1993 that has a factory spoiler that looks nice. |

Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
My pleasure.
About that spoiler. You may not be able to go that route, if that's something you're interested in doing, since it may have only come on LX models. I'm not sure if it was available with GT ground effects. If you really wanted to have that spoiler, you could take off the GT effects, and put on LX front and rear bumper covers. I'm not sure if anyone else has a 1993 special edition stocker or super stocker. You could be the first..... Anyway, just a thought. |

Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
No, it's the 1993 Mustang Special Edition. I think that they came in yellow, red and white, but you can change the color to whatever you like. Black on chrome would be very cool.
Here's a link that I got from Google to ebay which will give you an idea of what the car and spoiler look like. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-Ford-Mu...p2047675.l2557 Here's another example. https://www.triplewhitefox.com/mustang-index |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
That would be an option running 150+ pounds lighter and M/SA...think I will stick with the original game plan for now tho.
Dang...that ebay LX sold for only $3500. Glad I didnt see it earlier lol. |

Still slogging away on it. Got the trunk lid back on the car...working on a wire harness tuck in the engine bay right now.
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pse67e7156.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps1e83bb09.jpg Need to rig up a relay for these fans. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psa06e7e9c.jpg |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
I have a single two speed fan in my 68. One circuit is on the thermostat and the other is on a manual switch. That way I can run the fan on low with the electric water pump on to cool the car with the engine off.
In regards to comments on deleting heater controls over in your Camaro thread, the "keep the controls" rule leaves me scratching my head. I kept them but threw out all the mechanics behind it. The levers just flop there. I understand the stock dash, but heater controls aren't in the dash. At least in my car. Dale |

Feeling a little under the weather today so I stayed close to home. I did manage to get all the interior parts painted/dyed today. Took my inspiration from this photo...

Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Still no luck with finding a engine management system...everytime I find something I get outbid.
Question for the Mustang racers...what type of air system works best on these engines? Are the aftermarket cold air kits legal? |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Been following your build. Why not use the MegaSquirt standalone engine management? Fairly cheap for what you get, especially since you can eliminate the mass air. You can buy it in kit form and build it yourself to save even more.
|
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Want to stay mass air to begin with. I just bought a used Anderson PMS IV today so I should be covered in that area now.
|
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
The Anderson works well, I have used it many times before. But there is a little bit of power to be made getting the mass air out of the way. The only reason I would run piggyback over a standalone is if rules required it, (which as far as I can tell, they don't here) As far as budget, for what the Megasquirt costs about the same as you pay for a used Anderson PMS, factory computer and aftermarket mass air meter.
Enjoying the build, please keep updating. |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
This is going to be different...can't be any harder than a Q-jet, right?

I've been following your build. I run the pms on my stocker and it works ok. pretty easy to use. chassis dyno is your friend! good luck with your project.

Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Not needed on this car, but I ran across this Aerospace rear brake system for half price and could'nt pass on it. This one may never have much go, but it will definitely whoa hehe. Much easier/quicker to pull the axles vs the drum set-up to boot.
While the engine parts are at the machine shop I think I shall begin putting the interior back in the car...be prepared for a shocking change in appearance. :) http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps164322e4.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps6562c016.jpg |
Re: Ford vs Chevy Build-up
Thanks for the updates. When my granddaughter is done with Jr's, we are going to need to find something else for her to race. I have everything to put my 64 Fairlane back out there but a Fox body would be the cheapest way to go.

I was beginning to regret messing with this console instead of deleting it, but I believe it's going to work out in the end. I need to fashion a mount for the shifter before bolting the console down permanently.

I have a Precision Performance shifter on the way. It will be rear cable exit and mounted where the emergency brake handle used to reside. The factory shifter location would not be comfortable for me...too far forward.
