I keep thinking, how many trips to the hardware store does this guy make or has he got his own stash of racing hardware that will fill a large room? Secondly every time I think I’m overspending on my build I just look at his and then show my wife how much money I’m saving!
Awesome job!

Funny you mention that but I usually wind up ordering from McMaster car once or twice a week for hardware and have a long list of wiring suppliers I order from online.

I have a large Husky tool box from Home Depot that is filled with just hardware and wiring supplies alone, plus a couple totes as well. It's a challenge to stay organized on a large project like this. My basement is a huge mess with car parts scattered all over. Thankfully its slowly getting better as more of the car is assembled.

Most never give much thought to how expensive quality wiring supplies are these days. Between Deutsch connectors, fiberglass braided wire loom, txl wire, tefzel wire, cable ties and cable clamps, it's easily a couple thousand dollars. Then add in about $2500 in specialty tools for the wiring...

Awesome job!

I've had others inquire about hardware and supplies so I ran to the garage to snap a few pics.

The black tool box is just for hardware and supplies. bigger drawers have some tools like a heat gun, label maker and a hydraulic tool for crimping battery cables. I looked into Lista cabinets but they are crazy expensive. I got this box on sale for $500. I also looked into the drawer style metal storage boxes with the flip up lid, again they are costly for a single one, much less a bunch to organize a bunch of hardware. A good friend has all of his stuff organized in several towers of those, can't imagine what he has invested in the drawers alone much less filling them.

The little red bins come in numerous sizes. I found a site online where you can buy varieties. They were reasonably priced and made organizing alot easier.

I ran out of room in the tool box so I've been forced to use more of the Husky small parts storage boxes. This one is for small 6-32 to 10-32 button head hardware. What makes these cool is they are 18-8 stainless in black finish which most people don't know is available.

I had to fix the only issue I could find with the M&M shifter...the stubby wire lead on the neutral safety switch.

Disassembled and created my own harness and terminated with a Deutsch DTM connector. Pretty simple fix.

Little details.

Took time to install and wire the firewall starter bump switches.

These Ferrules keep the copper wire strands from being damaged when the screws are tightened. They also provide a nice finished look.

Thanks Jimmy.

I hate to say it but it’s looking like it won’t see the track till next spring. Things coming together much slower than I would like, but it is what it is.

Re: 8.50 index build

Found I didn't like the first way I had the shifter area wired. The 8 pin Deutsch connector didn't allow for bypassing the delay box, not to mention it is totally different looking than the other connectors in the DT series, and honestly kinda ugly looking.

So I rewired with a 6 pin and 4 pin connectors.

Tough area to make look neat & tidy with as much wiring stuff in one small area. It'll just have to do I suppose.

https://i.imgur.com/LT4TkWK.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/s8QUTMp.jpg

I've also been working on preparing the electronics panel to begin doing final hookups. Been so busy with other stuff I didn't keep track of supplies. I ran out of some heat shrink, label cartridge about to run out and didn't have all of the ring terminals needed. I'll have to finish up after those supplies come in.

Once that's done I'll need to do all the circuit testing and if all is good, move on to the engine EFI wiring.

Couple small projects Ive been working on while waiting for some wiring supplies to come in.

Been putting this off but finally got the quarter window boarders painted and installed.

https://i.imgur.com/pVjnUP4.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/AnTPPE2.jpg

Also got around to ordering the coil springs from Santhuff and got them slid in place.

https://i.imgur.com/0K0bKPZ.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/OaXTRFH.jpg

Decided I wanted to mount the Rife sensor block on the underside of the top cowl section. Did not want to surface mount it so this offset bracket sets the sensor back just shy of being flush with the cowl/firewall surface.

https://i.imgur.com/Mxyq5eR.jpg

And one of the last projects was designing and cutting out brackets to mount a 2" travel sensor to the shift linkage and tie into the Holley Dominator EFI.

Last little update is the engine is finally done and today is dyno day. Heading to the engine builders after lunch to try and learn a little EFI tuning.

Re: 8.50 index build

So Thursday was dyno day. Day went pretty well, made 6 pulls and decided to stop. The oxygen sensor on the Dyno Holley wasn't cooperating all that well. Felt we had a solid baseline tuneup saved which was really my goal for the day. Didn't hurt that the engine wound up making 15 more peak HP than before. O2's were still on the rich side (dyno o2, not efi) and the top end rpm limit was still a little low so it's safe to say there's still a little more power to be found down the road.

Engine changes since last time were swapping the too tall SV565 intake for a fully ported old school 2927 Super Victor. The last set of titanium valves gave us nothing but fits and were damaged so they were swapped out for a set of custom stainless valves along with a stronger spring package, new titanium retainers and titanium locks. While doing the intake fitment (cylinder heads have dowel shift) and porting on the manifold, the cylinder head guy found a couple small areas on the heads he wanted to adjust a little so we did. My guess is the additional power was from those small tweaks.

https://i.imgur.com/0F7WjUZ.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/dJaNcKm.jpg

Got home from the dyno at 6:30, quick dinner and back out to the garage. Engine set in place by 9:00. lol

Finally something worth sharing on the wiring. The main wiring panel and relay board are wired up. Not complete, but enough to power up and start testing some circuits.

Looks pretty decent for someone who doesn't wire cars for a living. lol Not perfect, but I'm pleased with the results. Have a couple small things I may tweak and try to improve.

Next I gotta do the engine grounds, then I'll start on the coil harness and then the EFI engine harness.

Back to waiting for some supplies to come in this week.

Next it to finish the engine grounds, then start on the coil harnesses. After that it'll be time to start on the engine EFI harness.

This was the second attempt at the coil harness. The first one I stopped when I realized I chose too large of gauge wire which just wasn't going to work. This second attempt I did the splices just past the merge point Just under the tube at the firewall I had two Deutsch connectors at the firewall so space was limited to try and stagger the splices. The lump really bugged me so I had to come up with another plan to clean up the look...

Re: 8.50 index build

For the coil harness I decided to install a Mil Spec connector on each side to pass the wires through the firewall. This allowed me to run all the coil wires through the firewall and do the needed splices inside where I had more room to stagger them and where they would be more hidden behind the dash.

One other small wiring project completed was the engine grounds. I needed to connect several large gauge cables to the back of the passenger cylinder head, but there was only 1" of clearance and near impossible to get s bolt started, so after some searching I found a stud that worked.

With the coil harnesses done it was time to move on to the engine harness. So first up was to work on the harness from the ECU to the firewall mil-spec connector. Once the wires were run, I metered the wires end to end to verify the pin outs on both ends.

Re: 8.50 index build

With the wiring pretty much done, it was time to install the transmission and converter. I had concerns over the converter pilot length given this car has an additional 1/8" block plate along with the 1/4" midplate. And sure enough, the pilot is too short as are the block bellhousing dowels. So while the trans was still in the car I wanted to weigh the car before removing it to resolve the two trans issues.

https://i.imgur.com/Up8Qo3y.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/FgE3Sbo.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/X2ZM23f.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/fs6YXMH.jpg

Weight as it sat on the scales, no driver.

https://i.imgur.com/ENqUgSb.jpg

I also weighed and accounted for all the parts not bolted to the car yet.

https://i.imgur.com/4P4Frvg.jpg

and a quick weigh with driver...

https://i.imgur.com/hTlo8yS.jpg

So in the end the car should be right at 2640 lbs with driver, race ready.
