Alex: I have no idea where they got the brown car, but you say the car came from Co. Could it be the blue car that Judy Lilly had in the above photos. I have been racing since 1970, and I never knew Judy had that 65 car,but then again there are a lot of things I don't know. Do you know where Judy's blue car came from? I paid a lot attention to these cars because a good friend of mine, Lynn Balek, from Mason City, Iowa bought his 65 Dodge new from Grand Spalding Dodge. Lynn introduced me to Gary O. from Nevada, Iowa and John H. from the Twin Cities.

Ray, in regards to this photo that was posted earlier...I heard a rumor lately about Judy Lilly's blue & white '65 Belvedere A990, but damned if I can remember it...okay I remember now, heard it might be the old 'Go Hummer' A990 car.

While those may have been reversed there was a "police" hanger that came that way and just bolted on. I had a friend that had a 63 aluminum max wedge in 66 that someone put them on.

Charlie, I see your point and it does seem that the front 'track' does look a little narrower on the '65 California Flash A990 car from looking at another angle, maybe the narrow tires had something to do with it.

340 Cuda. The Gruber and Kassie 63 Ply was an alum. sedan that was all white with red stripes on the hood and roof. It also had Keystone wheels all around. I can not remember for sure but I think it said The All American down the side. It has been the late 60's and I can not remember for sure on the name.

Also, A/MP in mid-year 65'

1966;
Popped on the Hilborn-injectors and ran #3000 lb. class
Northeast Match-Bash

Modified the rear-axle (shortened wheel-base) and ran #2800 lb. class.

1967;
The car was hacked up some more.
Ran #2700 lb. class. (Primarily Match-race Events in 'S/US' Class (Super/Ultra Stock)

1967;
End of year, Sold for $3000

1968;
Car was redone, and ran in C/A by 'Storm King'

1968;
End of year; car was gutted and scrapped.

Sadder words were never written.

I remember Dick Landy stating that one of the reasons his Coronet survived was because he was one of the few (only one?) to neutralize the body after the acid dip. According to him, the corrosion would very slowly continue unless it was neutralized.

By now we realize that a LOT of class cars got the acid treatment whether they were factory built or not. I wonder how many we lost because they simply lost enough strength to be unusable?

1965,

Plenty of options for the 65' A-990 cars to run in,,,

#3408 lbs. = S/S or S/SA (Factory Super/Stock)

#3408 lbs. = A/MP

#3200 lbs. = A/FX,,,,Maximum cubic inch 427 (w/Carburetors)

#3000 lbs. = Maximum cubic inch 427 (w/Carburetors or Injectors)

#2700 lbs. = S/US, (Super/Ultra Stock) ...Factory AWB (w/Injectors)

Unlimited = Any weight and wheelbase, (Blown, Fuel or Injectors)

With the demands from the drag strips for fast cars that could lift the
wheels off the ground, Match-Bash racing was the way to go.

Many of the A-990's were lost to AWB modifications.

1965 Super Stock Eliminator Pay-outs, at local drag strips back then, maybe $150 for a S/S Eliminator win. No money....

But A/FX or AWB Match Racing, you were pretty much guaranteed $300 for a Best 2 out of 3, plus travel expense money.
A 3 out 5 Match-Race, and $400 was the going number.

And if you were hooked up with the Gold Agency (booking agents), they could get you 2 or 3 Match-Races per week, and
at more money.
