Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series

OK Larry,
Knowing that you like to build them almost as much as race them (almost?), and you have been known to trade cars every couple of years... I am putting in first dibs on this one if and when you get tired of it! LOL
Cold and raining, so plenty of time to go back through the pictures. Lot of good tips and learnings, taking time and studing the pictures. Thanks for posting all the details.
Keep it up. You might beat that time line!

I did get all the front end put back together on my Firebird, just need to get the alignment done, and I should be ready to go in the spring. Need to tear the Jr. motor down and check everything there, and son's car should be ready too. Enough to keep me busy for a little more of the winter I guess.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series

a few updates for this week, we will have a new series of photos Saturday.

We have had the seats and dash in and out about a dozen times. The seats are in and out to test fit the cage side bars, shifter location, and control switches locations.

The in and out is successful because we are happy with the location and fit of all components. You already know about my "desire" for a comfortable drivers compartment. I like to call the drivers compartment my "control center" Everything that is part of controlling the race car [truck] is within easy reach and comfortable. In addition, my seating positing is comfortable and the entrance/exit is easy.

The dash housing has required several fittings/trimmings to fit around the cage bars. It now fits good and can be bolted in place.

Another pondering for this week has been the placement of the Digital delay fuse panel/relay panel and the MSD components. Today the decision was made to build a 15" x 15" aluminum plate to mount fuse panel, MSD 6AL, three step, and RPM dial modules. That panel will be mounted to cab rear wall behind the passengers seat. Stand by for photos of a clean and trick install.

Finally, we have some huge progress coming with the rear wheel tub sheet metal project. Our Team member "Little Chief" [AKA Popper] will begin the final install Saturday morning.

Stand by Saturday for a new round of photos.

one other bit of progress this week is with the rear gear set.

I have the 6.0 ratio setup completed and have removed the ring and pinion to be sent for treating. At the suggestion of Myron I shipped the gears here

for REM and CRYO processing

To transform a factory stock car or truck into an all out fully competitive race package requires many resources. It requires high performance industry contacts from all over the country. These industry contacts are some that a person cultivates over time while others come on-board as the need arises.

But and even greater resource are the local relations that help you grind out the details. One of my most valuable resources is my friend Monte. [AKA Little Chief on this board]

Monte is an experience fabricator and metal worker. These photos show the beginning of his wheel tub art.

Within the larger circle of Team Woodfin different team members contribute different talents and when it is all combined the sum is much stronger than any single member.

To operate the master switch a lever pins on the switch shaft. Then a control rod bolts on that and exits at the tail light.

I also want a control in the cab so we need a Morse cable connected to the same lever. I came up with this simple way to attach the forward cable.

Drill and tap the rod end to 10/32 machine thread then attach the Morse hardware for the forward cable.

I have heard the stories of master cylinder pushrod coming out of the master because the pedal did not have an upper stop.

Not going to happen with the Super 10. We have a solid, strong retainer. This is the same boss that mounts the steering column.

Also notice the original factory brake pedal has been bent to the left about 4" This gives plenty of foot room between brake pedal and throttle pedal

In other photos you will see the master switch mounted through the bed wall and the "on/off" rod comes out through the taillight.

I also want a control level within drivers reach. This shows a test fit cable through the fender down to the switch lever. The final cable will be about 10 feet in length and mount near the shifter.

And speaking of shifter, because the truck floor and seating is taller than a car by about 4" we need a shifter mounting platform. This shows a mock up of shifter "extender platforms" that will mount the shifter in just the correct spot. It will also incorporate the master cutoff drivers control lever.

Question, do some of you share my "loyalty" to some items. This shifter and air shift solenoid have been with me in five different buildups. I find comfort in having on-board components that are proven winners and proven reliable.

Tomorrow is paint day. Come on shiny black paint.

And even better news, no more fitting and welding and grinding to install custom items then removing them.

After tomorrow the parts go on to stay. We will have some sitting outside on all four tires photos soon.

It's time for some updates.

For two plus weeks my main attention has been struggling with an upper repository infection. It has taken the wind out of my Super 10 building sails :(

The turn around has happened and I am on the upward swing so let's get back to work.

This series shows the master switch on/off hardware.

The master switch is mounted inside the bed near the battery. The switch stem goes through the bed wall into the taillight area.

The push/pull control rod and handle exits through the taillight lens.

With a mounting bracket the forward push/pull cable comes back inside the bed at top of right side wheel tub. From there in goes inside the cab to a control lever mounted by the shifter.

Now the driver has the convenience of on/off power while seated in the cab.

rear struts in place, next comes "X" tubing to triangulate the rear bars and rear frame section.

Also coming soon the bed will be welded to the new frame in several places welding tabs in a number of carefully chosen locations.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series

Everything looks good, Larry. I like the remote control cable for the battery cut off switch and I think it would work well in my Mustang. What Morse cable and hardware did you use? Is it a parking brake cable or hood release? What about the cab lever? Are you going to fabricate it? The best I could find are parachute release handles.

Keep it up and thanks for the info and pics.

Dale

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series

Dale,

the cable is push/pull Morse cable like will be found with a dragster throttle cable. It is 10 foot in length [the cables are generally available in one foot increments in many lengths.] It has a 10/32" thread on each end and uses "clip style" hardware.

Several vendors sell the cables and hardware. "The Chassis Shop" is one example among several others.

The handle will be a chute release handle. I will have more photos soon.

Other sources can be marine suppliers. Morse cables are used extensively in boats for control.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series

Mark, Thank You, that is a very nice kit.

Dale, while the kit Mark listed is excellent it cost $200.00. In keeping with my theme of building everything that is practical / reasonable in house I have about $70.00 in supplies for my shop built version.

I will have photos of the completed system soon. The shifter mounting console box is under construction now.

Again, Thanks to all who are watching and enjoying. This is a cool project and quickly becoming my favorite race car, --- eerr - race truck :) And my only ever race truck.

I am growing to like the S-10 package. It is working out well and I expect it to perform well.

All the GT truck classes are NHRA minimums. That is to say no one has claimed a record in any of those classes. Many Many Many Moons ago I held records in the old IHRA Formula gas classes. Two different records over a period of three seasons. That was 48 years ago - WHEW!

So, once the Super 10 is worked out I will consider setting the record in "C" At age 68 it will be a good swan song.

Wheel tub Saturday.

Little Chief has worked his magic for an excellent fit. Right side goes in next then a raised flooring section over the frame.

The tubs are 38", looks just right and centered in fender opening. The 32 x 14 M/T has plenty of room all round.

Also notice components removed from bed for final cleaning and coating. I am experimenting with a light coat of 3M undercoater.

I want the bed to have a clean appearance even though it will have an aluminum cover. The rear third of the cover will hinge upward for access to battery and fuel.

More photos soon.

Tuesday is a good progress day.

*We have wiring being roughed in at the relay panel
*shifter mounting box fitted to floor
*both tubs now in place
*switch panel mounted in dash bezel. Notice the switch panel in angled toward the driver so the digital dial-in display is straight on to drivers vision.

Larry, was just viewing your panel installation and you may want to revisit its installation since it may not be legal.

Although it requires the leaning of the passenger seat, it is still too close to the driver.

The following is an excerpt from the General Regulations, Section 20, Page 36, 3rd Paragraph:

"All removable or pin-type timing devices are prohibited. Two-steps
or other rev limiters that are adjustable by thumbwheel, replaceable
chips, and the like may not be within the driver’s reach and will
preferably be located outside the driver compartment."

I was wondering if anyone would bring up the 2 step location.
The rule was not listed in the 2014 book, and strangely, it wasnt listed as a revision when I went through tech "class" last month.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series

One of our NHRA Division 4 tech inspectors works in Kilgore near my shop. I will ask him to come take a look and give an opinion.

If it is not acceptable I need to know now before wiring begins. It is no problem to move it however, there is no way the driver can reach it or even see it when strapped in.

Racers, am I to understand that no super stocker has the MSD components mounted inside the car?
