Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Looks good to me, but I'm not a tech director. My two step is mounted on a plate that attaches to the passenger side door x-brace. In your case, unless you're Houdini, you're not going to be able turn around with a 5-point harness on to change that dial.

Most of the cars have the panel mounted either inside the glove box area or on the passenger side upper floor to meet the rule requirements. In the past I have seen new cars bounced because the location was too close or at arms length of the driver and did not matter if they said they could not reach it after being strapped. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Larry…Looks okay to me. It will be behind the RH seat anyways. Your build displays true roots to the sport, done on your own and help from your friends. One of the most interesting builds on this site. The "dimes" involved were found in the bottom of the ashtray. MB.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Maurice,
I like your "dimes in bottom of ash tray" :) It is not exactly that low with cost because in order to be competitive some areas are expensive. However, I am saving in several areas by careful spending and in-housing fabricating where practical. Once it is finished and race ready the net cost will be very reasonable by todays standards. In addition, nothing is being sacrificed that will keep the package from being completely competitive. I expect it to qualify well and race well. |

Dale,
Here are both ends of the master cutoff cable. The "taillight" end has a flat strap tab with clamp and the "shifter" end has a clip like used with a dragster throttle cable. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
The drivers handle moves about 1/2 the distance the shifter moves. In the above photos the drivers handle is "off"

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Looks good, Larry.
I just finished fabricating a shift mount for the Quarter Stick in my Mustang. It's wedge shaped sloping down towards the front to straighten the stick out for the 2-3 pull. The lever could mount to the side like you have going. The car is buttoned up for a coat of primer right now. I'll post a pic of the shifter setup in a few days. Between your build and Rich Taylor's Ford vs Chevy thread I get a lot of useful ideas. I'm sure he reads this, so thanks to both of you. Dale |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
After looking at your use of the K&R air armed unit, I also purchased one. that is a trick little piece. I am using it for my street/strip dodge coronet. it will be for the three speed shifter and also tires.thanks for the idea. I am just not convinced for my t-stop use in the race car, I will stick to co2 for that one, lots less chance of water contamination. I have been debating the use of a battery cut off inside the car, love the safety aspect of it and if I forget to turn the master on. BUT somehow, somewhere I am sure I would accidentally hit it and kill the car during a race.

The vision is coming along. Fenders & hood temporary set on for fit check. I wanted to double check where some wiring and some components will be mounted.

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Keith,
note that the switch handle is well ahead of the shifter. This buildup is the 4th time I have incorporated the drivers electrical cut off handle in a race car. After many runs never any remote situation where the switch was accidentally turn off. During a run you are no where near the lever. However, there have been several times I was strapped in, ready to roll and the power was off. Turning on power is as easy as reaching beyond the shifter and pulling a lever. Very convenient. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Any ideas who would adjust the 2 step going down the track, and why? Just no logic behind some rules.
|
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Ed, you and I have some of the same thoughts :)

Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
And a note about D 4 schedule.
Originally I forecast to be ready for the spring of 2016 season. I have revised that forecast and now think one of these dates is possible. September 18-20 Thunder Road Raceway Park Gilliam, La. October 9-11 Thunder Valley Raceway Park Noble, Okla. |

The racepak has an internal G meter that requires a specific mounting orientation. These photos show the proper orientation. The USB card is accessible when drivers seat is tilted forward.
Also, the last photo shows the beginning of connecting wires. |

Friday updates.
The gear set has returned from treatment. I like shiny parts :) |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
I talked to evans perf. last week and will be sending my dana gears for the same treatment.
This build has been very interesting as I have always liked the trucks and wonder why you see so few out there. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Jim,
The S-10 package is a good choice. As this build progresses I continue to enjoy the experience. My age is 68, I have built MANY race cars and find that each package has it's personality. The S-10 is no exception, even with it only about mid-way in construction it's advantages are showing. Some things I already like; - easy entrance and exit - good, comfortable seating position - good visibility - relatively easy to work on - cool appearance in race trim - it has the unique factor I like, especially with the step bed - the body parts are plentiful and reasonably priced just to name a few :) |

Mocking up for visualizing.
Hood to carb clearance will be good. Header fitment is excellent. Header will have good tire clearance and good ground clearance. When race ready it will have a Victor E intake. The photo is just what I had for visualizing. The Quick Fuel replacement carb has an adjustment screw with label "fast --- slow" I have it set on "fast" |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
How much H.P. does your engine make?
|
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Glenn,
It is within reason that a well done 327 super stock engine can make 580 - 585 - 590 horse range. I expect the Super 10 to run 1/4 mile et in the 10.40 - 10.30 range |

Some mighty fine Saturday weather work day updates. Man O Man, it is soooo good to have some sun and relative warmth [low 60's]
These photos show I am closing in on engine position and header fit. The engine position is a balancing situation between header fit, steering shaft clearance and driveshaft angle. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Larry, do you have or anyone following this build have a opinion on how a truck would work with a stick combo? Has anyone ever run one with a stick?
The index in SS/TB is .25 softer than GT/F which is the same 10.5 weight break. Seems like a good combo. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Correction, meant GT/TB vs GT/F.
GT/TB 10.85 GT/F 10.60 Both at 10.5# |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
tough to make up for the weight break the automatic gets in gt/tb
|
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Jim,
as Mark posted above, the "automatic with converter" is allowed 5% weight removal even if that means running lighter than the class minimum. In the case of the Super 10 it means my truck would be about 150 less weight with an auto over manual trans. Yet consider this, as of now only a few trucks are running in the GT classes. If you want to build a manual trans GT S-10 I say do it. The construction would be the same. Most parts would be the same except for those items specific to manual trans. It would be great fun and you would still hold the option of swapping in an automatic. |

First photo shows final fitting to complete the bed floor.
Second photo shows a test of 3m spray undercoater on the tailgate. I like the look and will spray all the bed interior with that product. It will be a very lite coat just to give the bed interior a clean appearance. In addition, we will install a white aluminum bed cover. The rear section will have a piano hinged section for fuel and battery service. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
That bedliner coating will make for a clean appearance for sure...good looking machine!
|
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
Hand,
It is not bed liner material. It is 3M rubberized undercoater in spray can. It goes on in a very lite coat [especially if you move quickly] Three can will do the job for about $9.00 per can. #08883 |

I "fret" over things! Especially items that are giving me trouble because I am having problems visualizing the details.
Example, engine placement in the Super 10. Because S-10 trucks never came equipped with SBC engines nor 12 bolt rear axles, nor 32 x 14 rear tires it is a challenge to juggle the driveline alignment. So, after some "fishing lessons" from an experienced friend, I did just like a full tube chassis would be aligned. I used a full length mandrel [also known as a section of 2 1/2" tubing] through all main caps all the way to the pinion flange. Photo #1 shows mandrel aligned with pinion [camera angle is mis-leading, it is spot on aligned] Photo #3 show mandrel out rear of block Photo #4 shows mandrel out front main When finalized the pinion will be adjusted about 1.5* down I like it when a plan comes together :) |

It gives me a smile when parts go in for the final time. This shows the bed cleaned and painted [well, almost, mid floor will be in soon]
Battery, cell, compressor, fuel pump ready to bolt down. Also, some of the wiring roughed in and in process. Third photo shows becoming satisfied with front plate placement. Mounting tab patterns attached with vice grips. |
Re: Woodfin's SS GT/TB construction series
This will be an interesting week for the Super 10. I am submitting the information to Micheal Beard to finish the design work.
Once Michael has the final design I will post the results. The design will incorporate our "Team Woodfin" logo, the "Super 10" logo and other special licks. The truck bed will have a white aluminum cover. On that cover will be; "Faster Than A Bullet" "More Powerful Than A Locomotive" "Able To Leap Tall Buildings" [then the Super 10 logo] |
