Just a quick shot of my 65 Chevy build. Just finished up the body work, we decided to just clear coat it ( like they do at Gas Monkey Garage/Fast & Loud on TV ) and named the car on the door. Hope those guys with those 100K stockers don't mind. I'll have about $500 in the bodywork and paint when I really finished.
Billy, thanks for the idea on the name! Will Lamprecht Div 1 I/H Stk 396/325 |
Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Ok....here we go....Billy has recruited another one into the slow and ugly force........really really ugly! 74 Pontiac LeMans 4 door with 40k miles. 350 2bbl to run Q, R, or T. Thrashing now and hope to get it done for the Dutch Classic. I'm having trouble posting any pics on here but will keep trying. Probably gonna drive Billy nuts with questions over the next couple weeks! Time to head back out to the garage where it is drydocked....

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
If I didn't drive him nuts picking a combo, you won't working on one lol! Looks like Q/R/T is gonna be stacked in a couple years!

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Wayne, you should start your own build thread! As fast as you and the Kid work though it would be a short thread. And we need LOTS of pictures!
On a lighter note, I might try and get the 1K car out this weekend. I've got a "trick" DualJet all finished up and I want to give it a try before The Dutch. And if the new DualJet doesn't fix my drivability problems I just might throw a Q-Jet at it. |
Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Yo! Billy.....a 1974 4 door LeMans.....you gotta love this guy. Wayne best of luck to ya. Billy will keep you on the straight and narrow. I used to race a 1974 LeMans wagon with the 350-2 bbl. Started out in W/SA, that was in 1974 however. Geez, I really won alot with that car....mostly local racing. The 4 door will look like an old Georgia State Troopers car...if ya paint it silver over blue....NEET!

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
We already decided to name the beast Buford and put the sheriff star on the door! We have the rear out and they are 2.73s....direct fit for the 4.56s.....woo hoo. Should have drive line out first thing in the morning. Converter and headers were on the doorstep when I got home. I have trouble posting pics on here tho......

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
and I second, start your own build thread, would be better and I'm sure one of these guys will help with the pictures.....Frank

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
OK....some guidance here. I honestly have no idea about how to do a "build" thread". Hey Billy...the Mama waxed Buford....you can leave your windows alone....

Started the build thread. And the adventure begins.....

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Just a quick update on the 1K car, I made 4 passes at "The Beav" yesterday. The first pass I ran with the stock carb which is what I've been using as it has less in the way of "issues" than my race carb. It ran about what it should have given the track and the weather. The next run I put on the "new and improved" race carb and *********** it stumbled but not a "running out of gas" stumble, more like a "help me, I'm drowning" kind of stumble. Took some pumpshot out of it and ************ it stumbled a little less. The last pass I took as much pumpshot out of it as I could without going into carb surgery or completely disconnecting the pump and it equaled the ET of the first pass with the stock carb but it still has some stumble in it as it was .13 slow in 60' BUT it went a full 2+ MPH faster at the FL and almost 1 MPH faster at the 8th.
What I am taking away from this weeks adventure is that I was trying to cover up a fuel starvation problem with accelerator pump shot and not fixing anything. After some floatbowl surgery, I have my starvation problem fixed and now have to start taking away pump shot as this combo apparently doesn't want a lot of it. |
Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Billy, any chance of having a fuel sloshing problem? Sounds like you found something if it goes 2 mph faster. Way to go Billy!

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Billy, if you feel like a road trip to test, you should have no problems making plenty of runs at Hagerstown next weekend (November 2-3). Killer air to see how quick it can go on Saturday (yeah, I know, not 'real world' air). Plus get to race for $2,000 (or more) to win on Sunday.

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Mike, I'm planning on being there with the 1K car and the Turbobird with a special guest driver.

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Well, I guess that I'll consider this my final report. It's been almost 9 months and a bunch of fun and aggravation but the UTI4U1K car did manage to perform as advertised. It went under the NHRA index(barely) for under a thousand bucks and with the addition of an 8" converter has, as of now gone almost 4 tenths under.
The Epilogue I went to the Lee Sherman race this past weekend with the 1K car and had great conditions and lots of time to BS with old friends and meet some new ones. I decided to stop playing with my Frankenstein Dual Jet and put the stock carb back on and try and drive the car and that worked out pretty well. I made a few changes to the stock carb on Saturday at the T+T and finally was able to get the car and the driver into the same happy place. Sunday morning came around with some real ego massaging air and the car managed to put together a great grouping of runs with a best of a 14.47 at almost 91 MPH and a 1.863 60'. The car was right on what I thought it should have run until the driver went red. And that pretty much ends the year and draws the curtain on UTI4U1K. If there was a "wish list" for the car, it would include a professionally done trans and an 8.5 rear so that I could give it more gear. Oh and some more time to try and get the Dual-Jet perfected. Knowing that it could be a viable combo, it could definitely pick up with a good shortblock and reversing the pistons. But those are all things that can be done during the course of a couple of off seasons without killing a budget. I hope that this little exercise has given at least a few people some good reasons to think and, more importantly, some good reasons to act. Stock Eliminator on a strict budget can still be done, even in the 21ST Century! It's all just good old fashioned Hot Rodding! Just don't let the "Zombies" eat your brains! The End? OBTW, Vic Guilmino and I just might be playing with a really different Stocker this winter. Stay tuned for project "The Great White What?" |
Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Billy, is it fair to shoot for a UTI4U1K with a previous bracket car or is that considered cheating? I would think it would be like having spare parts lying around..their just installed already? LOL!
3500 converter (not enough but installed) OEM c-4 with shift kit 9" with 4.86's 29.5 x 9 MT's Scared to keep an expense list though in case the wife finds it!;) |

Best race at Cecil was Billy getting spotted and knocking out a COPO.
Had a pic and erased it off phone, darn it........ Great weekend and I got to meet the Legend, Outlaw Billy Nees..... |
Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Thanks Billy,
Hopefully you have inspired a few people to "do it yourself" ,and join the fun here. The converter experience you had reminded me to point this out...You don't have to spend $800 + to get started. Case in point: I had a reader here from NM contact me about a 245 mm converter he bought at a swap meet for $50. It was nothing fancy...just a starting point. I was able to raise the stall up considerably , swap out the stator, and spot weld all the non - furnace brazed fins for a couple of hundred bucks... It would work well for a 302 ,C4 Ford project to get it under the index. Look around, ask around..See what's out there...I don't charge anything to cut a converter open and have a look. |

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
A big old pile of snow that was laying along side my shop finally melted away and there is an ugly old black and silver GP there now! And it seems to be calling to me, wanting me to show it some attention.
Well, it's gonna have to compete with an even bigger and uglier white LTD for my attention this year! |

Billy,
Many of us enjoyed following your Dime Rocket build. Perhaps a new thread is in order for the LTD. May I suggest: Captain Billy and the White Whale. Good luck - we'll be watching. |

There's a 1977 LTD 2dr coupe with 67k miles at an auction coming up in Ohio if anyone is interested. Says it runs and drives.

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
It looks like the 1K car might just be making a comeback! It's in the process of getting a new set of headers sized to the 2V 301's little or no RPM potential and it's getting a "dammed" carb that will hopefully work better than the parts-box carb that has been on it. There just might be a few tenths hiding in the old dog still!

Re: Under the index for under a grand!
Billy thats great to hear . I was totally impressed with your build and I am sure that many were kind of disappointed when the thread stopped there was a lot of good info here. If you do bring it back Thank you !!!!! Please keep us up to date.

Billy, I saw you on the sheets for Maple Grove. How'd you make out? Is that the first you've run it in a while?
Tell us more about the headers. |
