Just noticed the shot of Gene's car on the trailer. That is the day we picked the car up from Ed Miller in Virginia. Who had that photo?

Re: A990 Super Stockers

This is the sad history of A990 Plymouth no. 32.

The car was delivered to Holiday Chrysler/ Plymouth in Edgewater NJ, without a designated buyer and it sat in the showroom for months until racing season came around in 1965. The car was not bought with the intention of racing it.

At the time we all raced at Atco three times a week, fri., sat. and sun. While we all had stockers there were three guys in Edgewater township that campaigned a dragster with a 409 in it. These guys bought no. 32, drove it on the street for a couple of weeks and then took the engine out for their dragster and pushed the car out on the street in front of the house and that's where it stayed for over a year and was still there when I left for college.

It was listed for sale in an east coast car and parts magazine but I don't know it's destiny, I never went back to NJ...anyone have any ideas?

John Rayford owned the car at that time.
No I'm the one just over rear window with sun glasses. I drove the alter wheel base, old S/M car and as I was driving the Poor Boy at that time for Sam, I may have been doing double duty that day. Can't remember that far back . But the truck in front was mine, and the guy at the door (with red hair and blue shirt) of Poor Boy was part of my team
Left too right they are,John Rayford , Harry Cambell, Me, Sam's neph.Sam just behind him (just see part of his head), Ronnie Hensley, and unknown last

Jim Wick was a Wisconsin based Super Stock and Pro Stock competitor and this A990 Coronet was still active at Great Lakes Dragway in the mid 90s.

Dart was researched and identified as the one,has been painted back to 69/70 style, looks BITCHIN'! Funnycar body is on youtube under supercuda, not sure what happened to old chassis but it is definately the original body, rumor was car was destroyed in a fire years ago,not the whole story I guess.still amazed the cars survived!

My story :
In 65 I had a good paying job at L.O.F. Glass Co.
I called Dodge & asked how I could get a new car. They said we will send you the paper work & you have to ordered it from a local dealer.
I went to "Glass City Dodge" with a offer to have them help me with the car If I payed for it.
It was on a Friday night I meet with the owner in his ofice, I'll never forget that it was a Friday night as you will see in the rest of the story.
He said lets fill out the papers and come back tomorrow moring & I ll sign a deal with you.
So as I drove up to the dealership at 9:00 am Saturday the place was covered with cops.
As I walked up & tryed to get in I was told that the owner had "SHOT" himself last night.
When I told the cops my story of being with him around 7:;30 last nighht they asked me ?
for a long time.
I still have the form I got from Dodge some place in our papers.

Holy cow Tom, that sure is a weird one...did you ever find out why he did it or was it foul play...and your lucky he didn't snap in front of you or something else worse happen when you were there...so you almost ended up owning a '65 Dodge Coronet A990 or did you have something else in mind at the time.

Very nice Impala. Would love to have it now. Not every cool Impala was an SS , a 327 or 396.

The car is apparently ruby red. It is the same car you see with the lab Technicians standing beside tinkering with the engine. The prototype car prior to being modified, sans single headlight and interior.
Looking at the wheel arches on the color photo from Jim Schilds book the interior is to be Tan, but interestingly the upper door frames are painted red. This would surely narrow down the search.
17 red cars, 2 with red interior. At a guess it would be the first red car released, early January.

I thought this '65 Coronet A990 looked familiar, it was on the cover of an old Hi-Perf Cars issue that I recall...

I was doing a search & came across our car so I thought I would post some pics from this past summer.
The car was known as Thunder II until June of 67 & originally campaigned by Jim Almeter of Attica, New York than was sold to Jerry Vaneck in Toronto, painted red & called the 1/4 Mile Hustler.
Its more famous as that car than it ever was any other name during it's racing days. Hap Gooder has owned it since 1973, he raced it a short time but ended up putting it in the garage & forgetting about it until he got the bug again! It was a 16 year restoration which included rear frame rails, 1 door skin & etc, etc, car was finished July 2008 just in time for the All Hemi Reunion in Salem Ohio. We love going to the strip & shows to tell the stories the car has accumulated thru it's history. The pics show the original Ramchargers posing with the car as well as Diane Sox & Buddy Martin who gave us their award at the All Chrysler Nationals. We also displayed the car during the Ramchargers Clinic this past summer.
I don't need to say what an honor it is to be associated with such an historical car & terrific crew, thanks to Hap Gooder, Jason Albano, & Al Murphy, Brothers Always!
Cheers & Merry Xmas
