How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
Hey guys just curious who all has done this since its 400 hp stick and 405 hp auto alum head in a 396. I sold my ls car and bought my dads 67 camaro back. And tearing into now over the winter and would like to go 9.99 someday:), and I am gonna run the 396 alum head combo in A/S. I know its a tall order to go into the 9's with this combo! Everyone has to have there own goals in life and thats one of mine :)
Its winter time just thought it would be cool to see how many have done this and what the air was and so on. Plus excited to get this thing done for next year and have some fun!!! |
Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
Dirk Olson could and will if he takes the weight out and lets Lance tune the car :)

I believe Paul Mercure did it at Montgomery Alabama several years ago at the NHRA Div 2 Open. I believe the third or so 9 second Stocker ever.

I sure couldn't, but you already knew that.

Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
The Aluminum Head 396 was not available in '67, so it would not be legal.
The first year for this option was 1968. |

Went three nine second runs in a row a few years back in Bob Gipsons 65 vette
Closer to AA/S weight. It was the alum head version then. http://youtu.be/tiDeZ_JsZ-E |
Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
If memory serves correctly, didn't Bob DeArmond run the first unfactored 9 second run at Mission in 2001? Lots of hype waiting for the first Stocker in the 9's, not so much the 8's. Tony Tosto B/S 3050.

Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
Quickest runs to date by my unofficial stats:
AA/S Steve Ficacci 9.71 AA/SA Jimmy DeFrank 9.73 A/S Steve Ficacci 9.88 A/SA Dave Ficacci 9.90 B/S ? B/SA Jim Boudreau 10.02 I think Jimmy D, Karl Martel and I are the only ones in the 9s with an automatic. A handful have done it with a stick. Look for most of those numbers to be lower next year. |

Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
I can confirm there will be another MI based A/S 396 coming back out next year. In fact a young man I spoke with at the Sportnationals told me there will also be another car returning to A/S from NJ that hasn't been out in a while as well.
Next year in A/S promises to be very exciting indeed! |

Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
My son Adam and I have made many nine second runs at 6 different tracks. Some in competition and some in testing. Set the NHRA record twice in 2012 with a best of 9.80. Our first 9 second run was in 2010. Our car is a 396/375 1970 Nova.

So, the NHRA allows someone to run an engine combination which was not available for that model year, yet I cannot run a cowl induction hood for the 350/255 combo because the engine option was cancelled before the cowl hood was released? After checking the classification guide, I noticed that aluminum heads are also legal for the '69 iron block 427, even though that was never offered from the factory. |
Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
Thomas,it's not allways what was produced in the old days but what is accected by NHRA. Welcome to stock eliminator 2014,just have fun racing. I've been racing since 1962 and guys are bitching about the same things now as they did back in the day. You should have heard the crap when Ford brought out the original Cobra Jet in '68 you would have thought someone tried to kill Grompy Jenkins. This is from the eyes of a G.M. racer.

The GMPP 401 aluminum head is listed as an NHRA accepted replacement part for the early cast iron big block Chevy closed chamber rectangle port head. There is a HP penalty for using the aluminum replacement head. For example, we used them on a 69 Camaro 427/425, and that raised the HP rating from 425 to 435, so we had to add 80 pounds when running them in A/SA. There are certain parts allowed by NHRA as replacements for old castings that are both difficult to find, and expensive to buy. In the case of cylinder heads, a HP penalty is applied, it usually starts at 10HP. In the case of the 401 head, it is not allowing a different engine combination, it is allowing the 401 head to be used as a replacement for the OE head, with a HP penalty applied. The same applies to some heads for other makes. An aluminum replacement head is allowed for certain combinations, and it carries a HP penalty. |

Thank you for the clarification.

Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
Ken you have a very good car, but a 70 Nova should be 402/ 395 iron, or 402/ 405 aluminum.

Definatley some very fast 396's out there!!
I think A/S will be cool this year too! Hopefully with the new cars in there own classes it should bring back some old school cars. . |
Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
I went 9.95 in Dan Fletchers car with that combo in the semis in Pomona a few years ago. Unfortunately it was heads up and Jimmy DeFrank went 9.74. It was a 375 h.p. rating at the time but I'm sure Jimmy can still go 9's .
|
Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
I think Jimmy, Joe, and Lance can all go 9's in B/SA.
|
Re: How many 9 second 396/375 alum head A/S A/SA
well if the cars are built with NHRA specs, I would be surprised any of them could
