In the whole national event series, or at the Gators? If it was at the Gators, I would have to say our own beloved Tom "The Old Man" Ward in 1984 running T/SA.

I dont think it was George Williams driving "Swampys Toy". It was some guy named Phillip MARSH....Thats the play on the name Swampys Toy. Swampys Toy was a 2 dr. Vega painted like Da Grumps car and Williams car was a panel wagon. George did win the Sports Nats. in Bowling Green, Ky (I think). Someone help out here.

Then George owes us a lot of money LOL Cause if he wasn't there we won. LOL We were runner up to him in 1980 at the Gators. We redlighted. I'm pretty sure it was called Swampys Toy it was a black Vega panel wagon.

Yes he won the Gators but the car name was somthing else. I remember seeing Swampys Toy at English Town and Grump was having his picture taken with the car and that MARSH guy who owned it. It was red on the side and white on the top like Grumpys car at that time. I will dig for the magazine that shows the picture. Georges car was white at one time before you guys ran him at the Gators. Let you know when I find it. P.S. I remember teching you guys in at English Town in 1974 or 75 when you had the Charger and I worked for NHRA..

Let's not forget our friend , intrepid track reporter Big Larry Hill, who won the Southernationals a few years back with his V6 pickup truck.

Hmm, Not sure about George Williams' Rampage Z/Stocker.
We need an archivist to look into this. How about Tony Janes?

, Back then ,the early runs weren't recorded either. I seem to remember adding about 8 tenths to the ET to stay out of trouble.

This is burned in my mind. It looked like George stumbled a bit off the line. I thought we had it in the bag.

Mike Smith won the '81 Summer Nationals and the '84 Southern Nationals with his '65 Belvedere 273 wagon. It was formerly Dick Moreland's, and is now Clayton Wright's.
It was also good for lunch runs, cuz of all those seats!

Larry, I believe that was the 79 Fallnationals at Seattle. Cal Queaphama was driving a white 61 Impala 4 door hardtop, in, I beleive, V/SA. I think Cals car was running mid 15`s at that time.

How about IHRA? Has Tom Gould won anything with his Corvair? And there was a FWD driver from Virginia(?) who had a good run a few years ago. I'm drawing a blank right now.

Re: Lower Class Winner At National Event

The FWD car was Tim Griffith. H e finished 2nd in the world that year but he also drove a mopar wagaon U/SA car at some of the 1/4 mile races.
He also helped me win the div 9 championship in2003 by loaning me his h/ps mustang to get record points.
Very good racer and all round good guy

In IHRA Randall Campbell made 13 Natl. finals won 8 in his 67 chevyII wagon Y/SA,also won 91 IHRA stock championship, not sure how many WCS wins, also 2 track championships @ Clay City,Ky.
I think that Randall would have to high up on win list in slow stockers.
Chip,
Where is Tim I have'nt seen or heard of him in awhile,he terrorized them @ Lake Cumberland about 8-10 years ago w/Jeep cherokee running Super Pro, No Box and Footbrake

Don't know if it is considered a lower class or not, but one of the most prolific national event winners has got to be Jody Lang

Re: Lower Class Winner At National Event

Bob Shaw's (#1 qualifier) times were 16.27,16.26, 16.23, 18.49 (single),16.23 (semi). Malfunctioning timers kept the elapsed times from being recorded in the final but the win lights clearly gave the decision to Shaw. Caisson (Y/SA) ran a 16.77 in the semi against Joe Swarz's (V/S) 16.08. On Monday, NHRA put 5hp on the 95hp Corvair moving it up to Y/S (24lbs).

What about Tommy Mattingly's wins a few years back with a O/SA combination older than dirt? Does that not count? Or Jody Lang with his N/SA? Or are those cars too fast?

George Williams was runner-up to Les Young's R/SA 66 Chevy wagon at the 73 Winternationals. He reset the Y/Stock national record at 17.22/77.05.
