1990 IROC project
I've been bracket racing and running s/st since the early 80's and watching s and ss thinking I'll never be able to own one of those. Well I found this Camaro and decided I'm gonna try to build a stocker. Today I went and loaded it up and brought it home. I don't know if it has a 350 or 305 but I'll build whatever it is. I'm open to any suggestions you guys have. when I can I'll post some pics.

Re: 1990 IROC project
Mike,
the 3rd is a good package with plenty of combination options. Will you build it as a tuned port engine? |
Re: 1990 IROC project
Welcome, you took a similar route that I did before class racing. Good choice of car too, if it's a 350 it will be a natural I class or the 305 will put it as a natural K. The 305 are a little more attractive right now I believe as the 350 was hit with 4 up this past season causing us to add 50 more pounds.
Don't know what your budget is but being in Texas I would have to recommend you speak to J Allen Sherman for your power at Trumble racing engines. He's a member on the board and has turned out some really fast stocker motors. Good luck. |
Re: 1990 IROC project
Yes Larry, it will be tuned port.
|
Re: 1990 IROC project
Cooter, I'm kinda hoping it's a 305. The index looked a little softer to me. And you're the second person to recommend J Allen Sherman.

Hey Cooter, what year is your car? What gear are you running with the 350?

Re: 1990 IROC project
http://classracer.com/classforum/pic...865380&thumb=1 I finally got around to taking a picture of the IROC. I've already started removing street equipment. It's waiting it's turn to go in the shop.

Re: 1990 IROC project
Thanks for the compliments cooter, mike feel free to contact me on my cell anytime, 225-717-1461 or my shop number 713-477-4430, I've personally race a 305 1986 camaro in stock in the late 90's to 2000's and ran good with it and Shane Burkett is a customer of mine and has an extremely fast TPI 350 combination that we did for him, so either route you choose we can fill the need.

Re: 1990 IROC project
Thanks Allen. I'm a long way from needing power for this thing. I'm still stripping junk off of it. I'm about ready to get it in the shop and put a roll bar in it and then on to suspension.
|
Re: 1990 IROC project
Finally finished with the roll bar, all welded and painted. time for subframe connecters.

Re: 1990 IROC project
So I got my brand new Strange rearend assembly. It came with a chrome cover, do i need to put one of those girdle covers on it? I'm going to run the 245/350 combo in this car with an automatic.

Re: 1990 IROC project
Mike take alot of photos and keep updating. I had an 82 that was back halved (old school) had a 565 with turbo 400 (was outlaw street car) love those camaro's. It was street legal and I would cruise it up to sonic by my house. 3200 lbs. 7.81 @ 185 at Baytown.
Read every line of the rule book, got some awesome knowledge on this site. |
Re: 1990 IROC project
Mike, I run the same combo as your building. When your making decent
power, they must leave fairly harshly to make a decent run. They are not going to make up much E.T. on the second half of the run. I run a girdle and I know they don't hurt. I would say yes. J.R. |
Re: 1990 IROC project
I know it's been a long time since my last update but I'm finally making some progress. If I had a smart phone I would post some pics. I've got the doors put back together, back bumper back on, rear hatch ready to go on. back half starting to look good.

Re: 1990 IROC project
Well it's been 6 years since I started this project and I finally drove it down my road tonight. It sounds and feels good. Next big milestone will be getting it to a track for some testing.

I do have the 90 350 TPI in it.

Re: 1990 IROC project
Finally took the IROC to the track for it's maiden voyage with a goal of getting from A-B and getting it on the scale. Mission accomplished and came home with nothing broke but a lot of work to do. I might have to make friends with a teenager and show him my laptop and how to hook it to the car. If I ever figure out how to post a picture on here I have a lot of them.

I put the FAST old gray box in it. and I don't realy have a clue what I can do with it.

Re: 1990 IROC project
I went a little overboard taking weight out. It's a natural H car and it ended up 57 pounds light for G.
