Best lifter?

I would like to know what lifters people recommend for a sbc Hyd stocker combo. I am putting it back together and don't want to use the shubecks. I have a new cast iron cam that has been nitrated. I would like recommendations and can you use them from cam to cam? Is there a break in process? Thanks

Robert

What is that suppose to mean? Seems like a contradiction of terms or is that their interpretation of a hydraulic lifter?

Re: Best lifter?

I use precision products performance center(PPPC) tool steel lifters, they oil the rockers right( don't flood) and have ran them 450+ runs with 475lbs springs.
Break in required, using 1409Xpac spring' I break in with stock LS springs, was using break in rockers but springs now have too much pressure, break in rockers won't drop it low enough to be safe.
springs are easy to change installed height set, so just pop LS off and 1409X right back on.
If lifter has .015'' travel it is considered "hydraulic".

Mike do you use them on a cast cam? Also, can you use them from cam to cam? Adhering to the break in process of coerce. Thanks to all the reply's please keep them coming.

Re: Best lifter?

You can refinish some tool steel lifters to allow them to be used on a different camshaft, they must be sent back to the lifter manufacturer. In order to be able to move a tool steel lifter to a different camshaft or lobe, it would need to be DLC coated. You cannot run DLC coated lifters on a cast iron core cam. You can use un-coated tool steel lifters on a cast iron camshaft, whether the camshaft has been nitrided or not.

I use Trend lifters.

Using PPPC coated lifters on steel cam so far so good! I still keep my fingers crossed.

Comp Cams takes an order over the phone for a stocker cam........are you getting a steel or a cast iron cam ???? Does the cam spec card spell it out ???? Never been ask that question.

Re: Best lifter?

Comp will ask you what core you want. I'd say 90% of the flat tappet guys run a stock diameter cast iron core, I think Comp calls their premium core a P55 Lobe Lock. They offer gas plasma nitride as an upgrade on the cast iron cores. Yes, the core has its own part number, you'll see it on the card.

Re: Best lifter?

We have been using the trend limited travel tool steel lifters that we get from Alan Roerich. We then send them to dynacron to get treated. We run 200 seat and over 400 open on nitrided cast cams with hundreds of runs. No issues.

Cast nitrided with Dynacron coating on cam and
Lifters works awesome, ran 2 yrs and cam looks
Perfect.

Re: Best lifter?

James and Ron, a couple of questions:

- Are you having the cast cams nitrided and then Dynacron coated?

- Is a non-Dynacroned, nitrided cam is okay?

- If you're going to Dynacron the cam, do you get a non-nitrided cam to start with?

- What are you doing for break in?

Feel free to PM me if you wish. Thanks in advance for the advice! :) -Al

I have been nitriding the cam and having it
And the lifters both Dynacron coated. Have
Used all types of oil with no issues. I have been
Breaking in with soft springs also!

I thought I got you guys a set or two of solids as well. Not sure if that is correct, or where they went, maybe in the 396 in the Corvette.

By the way, if anyone is concerned about oil flow to the top being too much, they have a pushrod cup with a 0.014" orifice. They can probably be added when ordering at a low or no cost upgrade.

Several DLC coating applicators say they do not like the Driven oil, and will not offer support to those using it. I do not know the story behind that, other than a few years ago, there were some lifters that the coating came off of in NASCAR engines. The Cup guys use less spring pressure than most Stock Eliminator guys use. No DLC coating applicator I know of will suggest or support their coating applied to a lifter being run on a cast iron cam core. I have had some tell me to coat the cast iron cam and the lifter, but I have not tried it, nor do I intend to.

Re: Best lifter?

Yes we had solids for the 396 as well.

Re: Best lifter?

Robert,
I haven't used any coatings,use the P-55 cores,non- nitrided,PPPC lifters uncoated.
Use lucas break in oil and race oil.
Have switched them and broke them in to another cam, check the crown on the bottom of lifter if has .0012'' or more and smooth use again.

Re: Best lifter?

Dynacron is not a dlc it is a tungsten disulfide
Lubricant coating and has a natural affinity or
Attraction to any oil, kinda has a property to keep
Oil on the surface making it a double benefit.

Mike how much seat pressure do you run? I take it that you check the crown after use before a new cam, if need be you get them resurfaced?
