Re: Who all races with a V6?
Any paticular brand your interested in? To be honest, this will be my first forta with a v6 myself. I am currently building a 91 Chevy S-10 4.3 motor with a manual trans. Why you ask? The biggest reason is I have it and its in the classification guide. Maybe not the best choice but with the people that I have talked to from here have been a HUGE help with all kinds of tidbits and guidance to keep me still interested in this combo. Not one person has talked me out of building it, even when I think I am way over my head. Believe me when I say this, it is no cheaper to build a v6 than a v8, at least with my combo. Still got to have a bulletproof 12 bolt under mine since I'm running a manual trans, so same price there as a v8 motor combo. Still got to have a reliable trans even with at the most 275 hp, 3.19 first gear aluminum case t-10 will work great with my combo but I will be upgrading to a jerico next year so still the same cost as a v8 combo. Some engine parts will be cheaper, maybe some machine work will be cheaper, but in the long run a v8, IN MY OPINION ONLY, would be a more econiminal way to go. Now don't read this as a discouragment in any way, just throwing out some plain facts that I have gathered since I have taken on this project. Hell some pieces are more expensive for my combo than a v8. For example, if I remember correctly, headers; 1 1/2 hedmans are under 200 but there 1 5/8 are over 400. If I was building a v8 car, almost everybody has an used set laying around that they will sell cheap. Now with that beening said, yes I am still building my S-10 for many reasons, one is as I mentioned earlier, two; I love the challenge. This is a t.b.i. system and I have heared of a few in the past using this system so I know it will work, but its still a big challenge to get it to run a second or more under the index (typing that last part with my fingers crossed). Third; other than bracket racing or the .90 classes, how often do you see a first gen. S-10? I know you didn't ask for my two cents but here it is anyway; race what YOU want to race. Do not in any way let anybody tell you not to do it your way. If you decide on a 4000+ pound barge with a straight 6, v6, or even a 4 banger, then do it. IN MY OPINION ONLY, the best part of owing a race car is building it yourself. Now I will get off my soapbox "cause I'm afraid of heights and I'm starting to get sick. lol . STOCKERS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rick.

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Don't ever be afraid to get on the soapbox with me, I love to hear peoples thoughts and why they do what they do. The challenge and parity are what I love about Stock. I definitely want to build my own car, but I don't want a V8, I am so sick of small blocks after years of dirt cars. I am pretty much "leaning" towards a six, I just got this thought after a Lemans wagon with a 231 came through my shop this last week. I'm waiting on a rulebook to show up, so I can do more studying, but I have spent a ton of time documneting factors on cars, both that I have and can get rather easily. Keep up the input guys, I truly appreciate it all.

Re: Who all races with a V6?
I also recommend Lane "The Hawk" Weber, for V6rwd talk. However, I race a fwd 173c.i. V6...I'm happy that I've enjoyed having a competitive car and not having to spend more than $5k on the engine work, plus the Accel Calmap software to bring out the power that Verle Stevens put in the motor...since my factory computer fought it, and thus a car that should've ran in the 16's instantly when it was built (04/96..yes 1996!), started out running 18.3's...the factory computer didn't like all of the legal mods done to the heads, and camshaft. The only sad part is that my car didn't run the index (or better, for it's first 3yrs), and it wasn't until the '99 MIle Highs (a race I loss the 3rd rd in by just .009), that the car was competitive. However my best break came 2yrs ago, when after years of begging, and the years 2000-2006, barely having a competitive car, NHRA finally dropped my horsepower factor down from the originally high 150, to a much more fair 130hp.
I hope you go with the Chevy 229, because it's 3/4's of a small block V8, so some of the parts (such as water pumps, et. al.,), could actually work on that motor that work on a V8? Thus the cost should be reasonable, however the V6 Buick has a big following as well, and with racers such as "The Hawk" out there keeping them on the map, that combo could be competitive in cost as well? I agree with you about wanting something different, which is why all of my noteworthy racing experiences have been with V6, or 4cyl cars (except my 1973 Pontiac Ventura, and it's 350 poncho motor). Good Luck with whatever you decide to do, and you already have a fan from out west, because although I have my own car to race, I'll always root for the slower half of Stock Eliminators race cars (meaning those that actually run 13sec's and slower)!!! |

Hold up, time out. LNorton, forgive me but did you say that your 231/100 runs 12's? That's impressive. How deep into the 12's does your car run?

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Dont forget about Harry Doolittle on the West Coast. He runs the N/SA 02 Firebird with the 231 CI V6. I think his quickest qualifying time was 12.11  in Pomona. I wouldn't be supprised to see him in the 11's this year.

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Harry went in the 11.94 at the finals in november 2006

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Yup, We went 12.83 at Cecil County this year.
And Doolittle has a bad piece! |

For that matter there's a '68, or '69 Ford Mustang that runs in Super Stock with a 6cyl engine, and at Bandimere Speedway I believe it was running somewhere between the high 11's, and the low 12's. I must say though, the 13sec & slower Stockers are the Arizona Cardinals of Stock Eliminator drag racing...GO CARDINALS!!! |
Re: Who all races with a V6?
Man Gary I love your enthusiasm. You may just convince me to run my 289ci/2bbl in my boat.

Re: Who all races with a V6?
I ran V/S 80 malibu 89-91 229 chevy 3 spd. stick had a blast, had to sell car in 91 kept engine(nobody wanted that) got car back year or so go.
Going bring back out in near future hopefully this summer V6 tip buy V8 parts that will interchange like lifters, springs, rod bolts, rockers, pistons, rings etc. every third set end up with a fourth set, some things are cheaper that way. Mike Taylor 3601 |
Re: Who all races with a V6?
Good tip. I almost went that way, V6 in a wagon or 4dr. Who did you get headers from for a 229?

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Greg Schmutz in Division 1 runs a 79 Malibu with a 200 V6 in V/SA and is VERY fast !!!
|
Re: Who all races with a V6?
A 200? The baby to the 229? VERY impressive! I started drag racing in a G-body. I grabbed a Mopar (slant six Aspen coupe), but as I go along here I'm thinking I should grab a V6 Malibu just in case...there's a granny-fresh one with a 229 and a bad trans in the wrecking yard right now!

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Hooker had headers for 229 when i got mine i don't know if still offer them haven't checked for years.I didn't know Schmutz was a 200 i figured was 229 or 267\v8 I knew he was fast ,200 that fast is really flying.

Re: Who all races with a V6?
Don't forget about 4.3L TBI. Hugely underfactored. Should run mid 12's in a monte carlo or el camino not leaning too hard on it.
