Question for Ed Wright
Ed,
I was reading one of your posts about your N/S 56 chev. When did you hold the record and do you remember what you set it at. I ran that class also back in the dark ages thanks, Butch Sentner |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
When they did away with Stock I held it at 13.10. Tom Ronca held the MPH, I don't remember what it was. Sonny Bryant and I swapped the et record a couple of times. Back then it was worth 200 points, same as winning 2 rounds at a WCS race. Setting the MPH record was 100. Now, zip.

Re: Question for Ed Wright
I held it in 1970 at a 13.24 and then I put a Marv Ripes glide and went some 12.90`s at Cecil county in good air. Cecil times were phony for the most part, too fast.
I was able to sell my 56 after the Cecil testing to a guy that was there that day. Butch |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
A lot of records were set at Cecil County and Atco back then. At The Dallas track (actually in Lewisville) at the Spring Nationals we would see some of those guys, as well as some left coast record holders, that could not run their own records. Welcome to the Sourhwest. :-). All you saw was their tails as their heads were under the hoods trying to find what happened to their cars.
Your name doesn't ring a bell, but I'm old. Buddy Ingersol and Garly Daniels ran N/S at that time with the same combo. A 1956 210 dr sedan with the 225 hp 2X4 carbs Vette eng. |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Holy cow Batman -- Is this the same Butch Sentner that owned Sentner's Sunoco in Allentown , Pa ? Or the one that owned Superior Automotive Machine again in Allentown . Or could this be the same Butch that was partnered with the infamous John Troxell in many racing endevors ...........Geez Butch I had no idea you could type let alone operate a computer.......how the hell are you ?
PS -- Welcome to ClassRacer .................. |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Butch,
Don't know if you are aware of this Junior Stock thread but I'm sure the guys would love to have you take part. Bob Rice http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=201085 |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Hi Bob,
I`ve read all the posts on the junior stock site. GREAT SITE! Thanks for the heads up on that site. Butch |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Butch, I'm really bad with names, I appologize, but it seems like the record was 13.24 first time I set it. Probably was yours It was at the Dallas/Lewisville track. Don't remember the year, but had to be about then. You had yours flying, 12.90s with a 'glide! About unheard of back then.

Re: Question for Butch Sentner....
Hey Butch.....You going to the Nostalgia race at Beaver Springs next weekend? I would like to stop by and say hello! You original Jr. Stock guys are my heroes! I started going to the 'digs" about the time you ran your car....although I missed seeing yours. I think I was at a race when the Ronca Bros. set an N/S record...not sure of the date although 1971 sounds about right? I saw the photos of your car on that site as well...and talked to several people that said you were one of the "heavy-hitters" back in the day....in a VERY tough Division!!
Many years ago, I met Alex Jarrell, the 3-spd. trans guy. More recently, I met Ken Gunning, and Laverne Benner at the Vargo Dragway Reunion. Might you be at "the beaver" next week? |

Re: Question for Ed Wright
Hi,
I won`t be going to York or Beaver Springs as I have a prior thing going that wkend. Hope everyone that is going has a great time Butch |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Hi Ed,
You may remember the guy that bought my 56. His name was John Thropp from Delaware. His interest was peaked when he saw the 12.90`s and at that time the record in n/sa was 13.60. He set that record the first record meet in 1971. I didn`t keep track of how he did with the 56. Butch |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
With all of the 56 talk, does Lamar Vaubel ring any bells?
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Yep, met Lamar at the World Finals the year they were held at Amarillo Texas. He had a black convertible (with a 'glide?)Very friendly guy. We talked quite a while. My home-made "slipper" clutch (3 speed saver/7" tire-hooker :-) ) gave up so I could not even qualify.
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
I remember Lamar Vaubel.......He was a great guy who left us way too soon.......I think he lived in a small town just northeast of National Trail Raceway in Ohio
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Sorry Lamar is gone. I hate to look at ND anymore. Every week we have lost someone else.

Re: Question for Ed Wright
Bob, that gaudy paint was traded to me for building a painter's engine. I was too poor to have mine painted,
He was too poor to have his engine done. My paint was left over from previous jobs. :D I thought it was really cool at the time. Not now. |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Hey Ed, I knew I knew you from a prior life, in Omaha. It hit me when I saw the picture of you racing the lime green 69 Chevelle at Cornhusker Raceway Park. That was Gary Vincent's SS/E car. I also raced a 69 SS 427 in SS/E. And a Roadrunner in SS/I. I'll try to attach pictures. I didn't pick up my time slip in Tulsa, when we raced in qualifying. I broke a part (fixed now), and the A/C in my trailer quit. I was hot and miserable, so, I headed home. I am too damn old for this stuff. P.S. was my light any good?

Re: Question for Ed Wright
SS Dart, Were you in the red Dart parked across from us? (black '96 Trans Am, SS/JA) I saw that one leave early. Give me your class & car number and I'll look. I have time slips here four four passes. Two SS/EA cars, one GT/HA (think that was Bryan Chaney, and a GT/EA. Let me know and I'll check for you.

Re: Question for Ed Wright
It looks pretty good to me Ed!

4911 - SS/EA..........We ran together in 2nd Q. pass. I think you had problems too. I glanced over on the launch and saw the under carriage of your car then you faded and passed me when I clicked my car at just past half track. Thanks Ed
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
You had an .036 light and a 1.44 60'. I had a .048 with a 1.34 60'. Mine failed to shift, and still don't know why. I disconnected my tach from the MSD tach output " just in case", don't really need it anyway.
Hope you got everything fixed OK. Even with the temps, if the starting line was any better, I couldn't stand it. |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Thanks Ed...The Dart is fine. I got looking at the Cornhusker Raceway Park pictures closer and The lime green Chevelle of Gary Vincent's was a C/S car then, so than must have been 1970 or 1971. I was racing the Roadrunner in G/S at the time and also had a P/S 62 Catalina. Oh yes.........7 inch tires. What fun. The really fast guys around there in Stock (I am sure I will miss spell some names and leave some out) were Fred Anderson, Garber and Daveny, John Wilson, Eddie Rezac, and Richard Charbaneou. I was just a kid fresh out of the Army then.....where has all the time gone?
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
I knew my 60' was not any good, the car spun and the front end stayed on the ground. (Obviously it stayed on the ground if I could see the under carriage of your car.......ha ha) thanks again
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
The guys I talked to most "up there" were Eddie Rezac and Herman Chapman. Saw the others you mentioned, all fast, just never got to know them. Wonder if Herman Chapman is still with us? Always enjoyed visiting with him and his wife. Judy Lilly didn't seem to feel the same? :D Don't know why. Some friction there.
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
How could I forget Herman Chapman. Really fast and would ground tow his Chevelle.
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Herman was really fast, and seemed like a no-tricks guy. None you could see, anyway. :D
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Ed,
Did I see your 56 running at Hallsville, Tx back in the day? Paint was the giveaway.... Who did you sell it to? Seems like I know who had it. |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Probably so, if it was a WCS or special race. I ran Tyler one Sat night before a Sunday race at Dallas. Don't remember many special races in that area, but I'm old. :D
|
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Butch, I found the record sheet good ol' Bob Rice sent me. It shows your old car:
"N/SA John Thropp St Georges Del - '56 Chevy Atco NJ 9-71 13.29" PM your email address to me and I'll email you a copy if you want. |

Re: Question for Ed Wright
I know what he was doing! First time I ran the Spring Nationals there I still had everything in the 9 passenger wagon. I was down to the last 2 cars in class, and a couple of friends were all excited trying to help me get ready. They trimed the tires (7") while I was doing other things. Red Anderson put a rule bok to them just before we pulled out to run for the trophy. (The rule book was 7" long and was often used to check tires), I was OK there, cold tires. They took my picture holding the class tropy, had me move up for fuel check, measured my tires and they were 1/16" over hot. Disqualified me. I got the picture, just no class win. Still have the picture as a reminder.
After that my tires were always 1/8th' under cold. I always learn everything the hard way. My friends felt really bad, but they were as green at that stuff as I. Heck, I was just happy I was fast enough to win class. Those SureForm body files did make the smoke! |
Re: Question for Ed Wright
Ed,
Speaking of the spring nationals, 1967 I was driving a 1960 chev biscayne owned by Johnny Novak. Car ran D/S with a 320 hp 348 built by Bill Jenkins. We managed to beat all the 57 Chevys and won the class. At tear down the NHRA guy checked everything but when he looked at the combustion chamber and piston in the block he was scratching his head , about that time the Grump came walking by and said don`t worry that block and piston is legal. The NHRA guy said good enough for me and we were the D/S winner. Great times to be a racer Butch Sentner |

Maybe some of you guys from the Pittsburgh area will remember this 56 from Larry's Speed Shop in New Brighton.
