Opinions on the best mini-starter

I know this should prob go in the tech section but I have to make a quick decision and I need some good advice.

I had a starter unexpectedly go bad this weekend (won't say what brand)... I had an old backup which worked fine.... but I want to buy a new one and I'd like to get some opinions on which one (or ones) are the best.

I went on Jegs & Summit and there are just too damn many now to choose....

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've had good luck with Tilton. Not the cheapest ones though.

Angelo,
With respect to the choices of the other qualified gentlemen that responded to your post.
I have had good luck with a CSR starter that I bought a couple of years ago for my Big Block Stocker.
I have had to replace the spring under the starter drive a couple of times though.
But CSR seems to have a better handle on that spring than some of the others do. They sell a replacement that is pretty darn good.
I have had to replace that darn thing every couple of races with some of the other big name starters of the same design.

I dont know if any of you have ever used a CVR before. I have bought 3, for 3 different vehicles, and havent replaced one yet. Its not super small, but it is smaller than a stock starter. It's cranked a 13 to1 BBC for 4 yr s now, and had one on my Duster for 5 yrs, and one has been on my Cutlass for 4 yrs. Been good to me...

Barnett has them.

I've had a Tilton on my car for the past 7 years or so with no problems at all. Sbc with 13.1 comp.

The starter on my S/S car is from Greg Porter at GPE Competition Starters. He is a racer and builds a great starter. No problems on my end with his stuff.

A Tilton starter is all I have ever used. I have installed one on each new car of mine over the years (street and track), and have never replaced one. Because you know when a lesser part will let you down.....the final......for the money!

I've only had one Tilton on my AMX and after about 7-8 years of use I had to replace the spring and pinion gear (if that's what it is called). Cost me $125 for the parts and only a few minutes to replace it on my own.
Great starter and I did get my money's worth!

My new engine required a larger gear because I went to a smaller flywheel. So it's a custom. I called Greg Porter and told him "no rush" as the engine is far from done. It arrived about 7 days later! I haven't used it yet but I think it will crank over a diesel, it's still a mini and the price was right. I would suggest a call to Greg.

Avoid the Jeg's branded starters. I bought one and the drive slipped almost from day one. I thought it was initially a mesh issue but after some investigation I realized the drive was the problem. Installed a new drive and it works fine now......

Never had an issue with either an East Coast or Tiltons. Big Block engines with high compression on gas or alcohol injected.

Tilton, I bought the one for my car used in 2002. Still works, just had to replace the drive return spring last year. Spring and retainer cost 27$ My brother used to Work for IROC that is now gone. He told me stories of when they used to load the cars in the trailer, they would put the trans in 1st gear and use the starter to move up and into the trailer. They are the best

I use the HOUSE OF PAYNE starter. They are built by Mark Payne that runs Top Sportsman. Very good piece and reasonably priced too. I got his number in the trailer will post it tommorrow.
