Div. 7 racers, R.M.R. has a BIG RACE 4 US!
 

We may have bombed with regards to Tucson, but I just spoke with Ron Craft (the manager of the drag strip at Rocky Mountain Raceway, in Salt Lake City), and here's what they're offering us during their upcoming "Nitro Jam Race" the weekend of June 17-18th (Fri-Sat): A Stock/Super Stock Combo race that will have these features:

1. An entry fee of only $150 bucks.

2. A payout of $1,600 to the winner, $900 to the runner-up, $500 to the semi's, and $100 to the quarter-finalist, as long as a minimum of "9" entries show up for the race!

3. An Ironman trophy will also be awarded to the winner.



We need to jump on this, and I plan on doing so, so how about it racers??? Since they only need a minimum of "8" racers (because I've already committed to going), and if Paul Plummer from D6 country shows up too, then we'll only need "7" minimum? There won't be contingency postings at this race, but with a guaranteed payout of $1600 to the winner for a race that cost less to enter than a D6 or D7 divisional, that's pretty damn good I think.

So here it is racers, I know that D5 & D6 have divisionals going on that same weekend, but D7 doesn't so this is our opportunity to embrace the competition that we claimed we wish we had....I'll be there, who's with me???

Oh and there will be weight and fuel checks there also, as well as I.H.R.A. classes, so those of you with DP's and CJ's will not be racing amongst the carbureted class cars...after all, R.M.R. is an I.H.R.A. track. $1,600 bucks to the winner and an Iron Man Trophy? Sounds like an operation that's proving it cares for us sportsman racers to me!!!

I have been in contact with Skooter and Ron as well - I am planning on attending the Salt Lake race. I am also personally posting another $200 to pick up someone's entry fee and a little gas money via a random drawing for those stockers/superstockers who show up to race. Also, there is an NHRA division race at my home track of Spokane the same week-end - 1/2 hour away from my house. I am foregoing a division race in my backyard, planning on traveling 11 hours to race on top of mountain and support IHRA out west. It is a small price to pay for what is always a great time with IHRA!

Come join us and have some fun. By the way, I know there are a lot of bumper and wheel polisher types that have street cars in Salt Lake. Instead of going to the burger joint and BS each other about how fast your sled is, why not take it to the track during Nitro-jam and enter stock in pure stock class. There likely won't be many if any cars in your class, you can foot brake bracket race all week-end long, run at a National Event and have a chance to win some real money. At the burger stand you can't even win a hamburger!

That last part was funny Paul...lol, but I'm glad that you're going too, so now we only need 7 more entries...hopefully those "bumper and wheel polisher types", will show up with us (if not shockingly some other stock/super stock racers)? I look forward to meeting you, and shaking your hand to thank you for being there last year as well! The last time I raced at that track, I was barely competitive, since Glendora had me factored to race turbo mopars (not to mention my factor was based off of the aluminum headed V6's, while mine was/is cast iron, and 10-20hp weaker). However, they thankfully gave me a much more fair adjustment to 125hp (down from the original 150hp). It took awhile to get there, but this too is worth it...see ya there...

Additionally per my chat with Ron Craft, If you are not an IHRA member, you can purchase for $25 bucks a "one race" membership/competiton number/ chassis certification ( as long as your NHRA status is current). If it is not current, then an IHRA membership etc., will be required at IHRA rates (which are still half of what NHRA now charges).

"See my adjustment to the original post...due to clarification by Ron Craft". Again this race WILL NOT QUALIFY FOR THE WORLD FINALS "TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS" race after all, due to it being a combo race, and not a regular Stock Eliminator and regular Super Stock Eliminator race....that will be changed next year, with the success of this race helping that quest out!

My first post on this forum. This is worth trying to get the car count up in class racing in the new division 6 of IHRA. I will be there for sure , and possibly 2 other super stocks and 3 stockers from Wyoming and Colorado. The track is great, Ron and the personel are super to work with and really appreciate the sportsman racer. It's in June and there is lots to do in the Salt Lake Valley.See you there! This is one super stock that's in for sure!

Here is the extent of my personal ability to attract racers to the Salt Lake Event.

There are three stock eliminator racers in my community. I personally only know one of the other two. I do know that both of these guys are died in wool NHRA competitors. This isn't meant to be negative. They and their friends have raced together at the NHRA events for years. As I stated in a post several months ago, we are not only fighting multiple division races scheduled the same week-end but also battling the family reunion nature of the NHRA santioned races.

Needless to say I am the only local racer willing to fore-go my local division race and travel to Salt Lake.

I do have a good friend who is an old school super-stock racer who is working hard to get his car together and is expressing sincere interest in going to the Salt Lake event. I would say we have a 50/50 shot of getting him. Travel costs will definitely be an issue for him.

So all of that having been said, I do have a few other outside-the-box ideas that I think would best be discussed sans email or phone vs. this forum. Ideas that we could work out with Skooter at IHRA and Ron at RMR. Email me at m900rider@gmail.com or call me at 208-691-6394 to discuss.

Glad to hear that L. Rush, because with you and those you spoke of hopefully being there, that will make this a venue where all of the fans that showed up for their Nitro Jam race last year, really like seeing us there (over and beyond where we all will be coming from). I think there's some Az. racers (and possibly at least one Ca. racer), who might chime in on this with me too, but I'll have to chat with them to see? Ron is very excited about this happening, and I'm thankful to have the chance to support it (along with you, Paul Plummer), and all others who'll be there. Having raced at R.M.R. in the late '90's, I don't ever recall seeing as many fans in the stands, as there was at their first Nitro Jam race! THE STANDS WERE PACKED (from what the Drag Review Magazine pictures showed), and my biggest regret was I wasn't there to take it in with the "5" racers (Paul Plummer being one of them), who were there. GOD willing, I will definitely be there this year, and I'm counting the days!!!

Great news from Wyoming & Colorado, I am originally from Great Falls, MT - Anybody else in Idaho or MT reading about this and care to find out more and how to participate?

Terry Hombre - are you doing the Spokane Division Race? If not, come and visit us, I still feel a little guilty about missing second gear and then driving around you when you thought I broke!!!! Come and trailer me!! If not, good luck at the division race in Spokane.

Paul you mentioned a while back that you car was a little slow to be competitive in nhra class racing. Maybe if you stayed closer to home and put that travel money in you car you could pick it up some. We know those Buicks can be good combos and in div. 6 you are not having to dodge a bunch of the DP's. Good luck which ever way you go.

Your thought train is correct in theory. Here are the issues with NHRA and the reason why I chose to set-up a crate motor stocker for IHRA:

1) NHRA meaningfully stopped enforcing rules a couple of decades ago which changed the face of stock eliminator racing and the associated costs. Additionally all of the cheating has resulted in the downward migration of all of the indexes and two years ago a further reduction of .3 in the indexes.
2) I would need to pick-up about 74 HP to be exact to have a chance to run with the fastest Buick Stocker in the country and still would be marginally competitive with other C cars in the country, I believe the current record is 10.25 in C/SA. The only way to do this is is to pay approximately $8K for a set of ported and covered heads and intake manifold. My car is alredy set-up with the lightweight trans, chassis & suspension mods, etc.
3) Per HRD, my cylinder head shop, "their is no-way to pick-up 74hp with a set of bone stock Buick cylinder heads and intake without a bunch of porting, covering and severely cutting intake and exhaust flanges to get the runner volumes back to spec.
4) I can afford to do this, however, HRD's & my personal moral and ethics will not allow me to knowingly violate the written rules no matter what the cost. I am not a herd follower so I do not care what everyone else is doing, not on aboard with "Its only illegal if they catch you" mentality or the one I like best " I just bought this engine from an engine builder, I don't know what is in it?
5) At the last division race at Spokane, there were 5 C/SA cars out of 21 racers and I had to shut the car off at 1000' every qualifying run to position myself at the bottom of the ladder in hopes of avoiding a heads-up race first round. In years past this was no problem as I was running .5-.6 under the index which was enough to play keep away.
6) Two years ago NHRA penalized those of us who run completely legal programs by dumping the indexes by .3 of a second. With my combination I am now a .2-.3 under car with very limited ability to play keep away.
7) To compare and contrast with IHRA, I used my same NHRA stock eliminator bottom end, added a set of unported cratemotor spec Buick replacement heads, intake manifold and Holley 850 carb per IHRA rules all at a cost of around $4K, checkout www.classracertech.com for hard costs and performance data associated with the conversion. The good news is that everything was manufactured in this century and I did not have to do any porting and covering BS and did not have to take out a second mortgage on my house to afford the go fast parts. .
8) Based on late season testing, my car will easily run 1 second under the index in F/CM or G/CM.
9) IHRA just added a divsion six for us here in the Northwest and Canada with at least 5 tracks within one days drive including 5 pro-am events and two national events.
10)You can drive right up to the gate at these events pay your money - no grade point BS and at the IHRA National events I have never been more than a half a block from the staging lanes. They treat us stock and super stock guys like royalty event though we are not the fan draw.
11) For me it is a no-brainer to run IHRA, No more shutting off at 1000', much cheaper to run, don't have to cheat to compete, get to use modern parts, get treated like a rock-star at every event.
12) I will continue to support our local track effort. Cindy and Charlie are good folks who are rebuilding our local racing programs here in Spokane and we all need to make it to the track a few times each year to help them in their efforts.

Harry, I'm glad that Paul's going to haul to SLC, to run this Nitro Jam event, and here's two reasons I feel he's going to do it:

1. The enhancements that NHRA graced us with included lowering our indexes .30 sec. IHRA (on the other hand), has left the indexes alone (as well as the classes, thus no running heads up with DP's and CJ's).

2. By supporting IHRA, we're letting NHRA know that we embrace competition out west, which may (eventually) get them to share the cost of racing with the pros, instead of sticking it to us sportsman racers all of the time (for the pros benefit). :(

Therefore, Paul's car (just like mine), will be more competitive against the indexes. Heck, I'll be hauling nearly that same distance (he's going to be), next week my darn self...I had made plans last year to move away from Az. to either D6 or back to D5. However, with the Tucson track embracing IHRA, and Salt Lakes offering for this race, I'm feeling good that we in the west coast, will now have more options for our racing dollars. Where you race is occasionally more important than how often you race....

Ron Craft, Dragstrip Manager at Rocky Mountain expressed his gratitude to everyone planning on attending this event. He also reconfirmed the racer fees and guaranteed purse for the event as follows:

Hi Hawkster, after last Septembers bracket finals, I left my car up there in your neck of the woods, and now that IHRA has been embraced by Tucson, I'm going up there to bring it back here (eventually). Since my company has made an acquisition of a financially plagued company (here in Phoenix), staying put in Az., is starting to look better for me, and I wish to support some sorely needed competition for our racing dollars out west...I just hope the weather co-operates with my travel plans. I'll pm you with more info....

Since posting the joke reqm't, there hasn't been one post......hmmm... ok, no one has to tell a joke to get on the list....but I do have one that I heard recently that I thought was pretty funny - one you could even tell in church!

There is this snail and he is a door-to-door magazine subscription salesman (Hang with me here and use your imagination - it could happen). Anyway, he strolls up to this persons house, rings the bell (must have had a snail ladder I am guessing) and is greeted by a very cantankerous home owner (A retired class racer no doubt).

The gentleman takes one look at the snail and says "what the hell do you want?", to which the snail replies " I am selling magazine subscriptions would you be interested in possibly Drag Review or Car Craft?" The homeowner gets very upset and says "oh great another salesman " and proceeds to launch the snail off of his porch via his right boot!

About two years later the snail crawls back up on this guy's porch, bangs on the door and says " hey what the hell was that all about"?

The payout is ok for the racer with the low car count but the track won't do very well. Eight car minimum is only $1200. with the finalists taking home $2500. Sounds like the federal government is running the track. Hope they can make it up elseware.

Let us know about yourself, your car and what class you run? We would love to get your name on the list for either Salt Lake or Ashcroft B.C. to help these track owners from having to subsidize our racing efforts. If you are a Spokane local, maybe we could meet up at the track during a test night and hang-out!

My stocker is a 68 camaro. Currently on a rotisserie for updates, has been for several years. When I lived in eastern wa. I raced a lot at Deer Park in the sixties then Spokane in the seventies. Lately I've been racing a 53 Stude or a 31 Ford coupe at nostalgia races. Woodburn,Bremerton,Pacific and Forks mostly. Sometimes Yakima and Boise. Hopefully have the Camaro back together in the next few years. I even had a 69 Buick GS 400 awhile back so I know where you coming from. Hope to see you some day but it won't be at Ashcroft. Been there done that.

Hi Don,

Go to the IHRA website (from here), and scroll down the 2011 schedule to find the SLC Nitro Jam event, and there's an icon with the good stuff on the events payout (plus the classes being run), there. For more info, visit "rmrracing.com" for possible contacts, nearby hotels, etc....I'm going to have to check that out myself. Glad to see you're going, and that we have nearly 20 cars! With this race having more cars than the San Antonio race did (8 stockers & 5 super stockers), this will speak volumes towards this race being a regular national event next year!!!

BTW, check out the fans in the stands from the Tucson Nitro Jam race! I don't recall ever seeing that many fans there for any of the divisional events they held there, during these past four seasons, do you Don? You can go into the IHRA website, and pull up the Drag Review Magazine, and read it from cover to cover online, and you'll see the coverage, and all of the fans they had there too! See ya in 2mths.!
