Was at carliyle pa. swap meet years ago and had two sets of those wheels, onenew set in the original barrel as they were shipped from hurst ,un-opened and a set of used ones . It turned into a auction, I think the new ones sold for $1600 plus , they went nuts over them !!!!!!

Hemi Moose 11-14-2011 08:30 AM

Re: Hurst Performance

Yes the wheels came in this type of shipping drum.

Has anyone ever heard of a one off 68 or 69 442 that was built for George Hurst with the Tornado front wheel drive system? A coffee talk discussion brought this issue up. I am not referring to the any of the Hurst sponsored race cars.

Yes. There was a magazine article on it but I can't think of which issue at the moment. I think it was a Hi Performance Cars issue circa 68. I'm pretty sure the car was a 68. Had those vented rims like Toronados had. I will try to find it or the magazine issue. Not to be confused with the 67-68 Hairy Olds. The car you were talking about looked like a regular 68 442 on Tornado rims. I think it was a challenge to get everything into a GM A body.

I had mistakenly thought it was in a Hi Performance Cars issue from 68 but in fact it was March 1968 Super Stock. You may be able to find an issue on ebay. All I did was google FWD 442 and there it was. I saved it to my computer and Im going to print copies for myself.

Here it is in color. According to the link at the bottom of the post this car was a one off car built by Hurst for George Hurst.

1968 FWD 442

http://files.activeboard.com/972781?...ZsGMsp1wmZU%3D

1968 442 with a 455 with front wheel drive. It was purchased in 1970 from Guy Martin delarship in Woodland Park, California. The story is that only 3 of these cars manufactured as a special order from Hurst from Oldsmobile. This is the only one known to still be in existence. It is gold with a black stripe down the hood. The VIN is 344878M137975.

Do you happen to have any information on the Nova that was shown in the above photo? Just curious, did Hurst keep records of all of the Vin #'s of their cars?

I noticed that Nova and marvelled but I dont know anything about it. I was desperately trying to post Mopars to balance my flood of Olds shots. Not sure about the VINS either. Just know a little about the 442s being shipped down the road to Demmer Tool and Die in Lansing for striping and the installation of Toronado 455 engines to make them Hurst Olds. At the time GM had a ban on intermediate A bodies of 400 cubic inches. Although the Chevy 396 was a 402. So the 455 engines had to be put in the Olds outside the GM plant. The ban was lifted in 1970 as we all know. Hurst seemed to make a variety of vehicles of different makes. Most I guess were one off vehicles.

I'm really confused on the shot with the guys in the Hurst shirts hanging onto a hemi It looks like a 273,or 318 2 bbl. dangling over the engine compartment of a 65???? Barracuda, but then you have a couple guys trying to wrestle a race hemi into the interior of it. Was this the first wheelstander??

VC, I don't know why I was thinking Buick when looking at some of the photos you posted back on page one, it obviously was an '74 Hurst Olds W30, maybe the similar body styles that year threw me off, not to mention all the others that they built over the years such as Pontiac Chrysler Dodge Plymouth AMC/Jeep models back then or perhaps a few others that I don't recall at the moment...I am curious though how many '71 SSJ Grand Prix's did they make, because I didn't see to many of those around.

I'm pretty sure it was this car, the '65 Hurst Hemi Under Glass...notice the different front grills though.

They made the Grand Prixs in 70 and 71. The 4 headlight cars are 70s like the bottom photo and the 2 headlight cars are 71s. Im not sure of the production. My guess is about 500 per year. Pontiac guys can weigh in.
