Steel City Missile
Does anybody have any knowledge or pictures of a 1974 Plymouth Duster called the Steel City Missile? I have been told that it was based out of the Pittsburgh area, raced in NHRA G/SA as a 1973 Duster and was a record holder in 1993. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks, |
Re: Steel City Missile
It was Raced by Steve Beyano (sic) and the sold to Mike Loge in Mid 90s (California Missile) Then I acquired it maybe 10 years ago or so and sold it to a Bill in Joilet ILL. He had Brad
Van Lant prepare to car and it was FAST!. Brad probably knows who bought it from him about 3 years ago. This is the Yellow Steel City 73 Duster 340 car not the Aspen/Volare Car. |

Someone sent me a copy of this picture.
I'm not sure who sent it to me. But I believe this is the car you are referencing. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...estein_011.jpg |

Talked to Steve the other day.He is retired from the sea food business.A couple of years ago he went to Bonneville and set the c production stock record in the 240 mile per hour range in a newer turbo charged Mustang.I told him there are new Mustangs in stock eliminator that can nearly run that.!!!LOL

Re: Steel City Missile
Bill Ponche's duster is NOT the "Steel City Missile".....Bill's duster was sold to Chad Langdon and his Wife at the time Debbie raced it around 1976.If I remember correctly Chad won a points meet at orange county with it too.Phil Saran bought it from Chad and Phil Raced it for a few Years.Around 1986 we bought it back. We painted the duster yellow and My brother Scott raced it until around 1995 when Jon Irving bought it. The duster was an original 73 340 auto california car...very clean!!! My dad bought the steel city missile from Steve Benyo in 1985 renamed it california missile, set numerous records, won a national event with it and several points meets. In 1989 i started driving it and won and runner uped at a national event with it and also set some records. This car was very "trick" for the time... Re: Steel City Missile
Anyone have pictures of the car with the yellow paint scheme?
Thanks, Phil |
Re: Steel City Missile
I am sure Randy is right....my memory is not that great anymore.
I'll try again......I think the Black Duster went to Dan Durham around 98 and then to a young guy in Rancho California who race out of Bob Mazzolini's shop in riverside in early 2000s forgot his name. Have I got it right this time? Is that the Right Missile? I think there might have bee two different Black cars that you raced and I may still have the wrong one. |

Re: Steel City Missile
I would like to know the whereabouts of the" Real " Steel City Missile that was owned by Steve Benyo. The car was a 1974 360 built by Neil Lehman and myself. It was the Hamburger / Lehman team car in the mid to late 1970's. The last I head it was in Michigan and was converted into a 1973 340.

Re: Steel City Missile
Wes,
I talked to my dad today about the missile. He knows who has it now, it is still on the West Coast. We raced it for many years and have loads of pictures. It was in the Mopar Performance Parts catalog as the California Missile. When we stripped it down to paint we could see remnants of the original hamburger paint scheme, blue and white. Loved the car, it was good to us and my Mom still hasn't forgiven him for selling it. lol, If you want any info, just call my dad, Mike Loge 925 584-8402. |
Re: Steel City Missile
Sort of off topic, but this thread got me wondering what happened to Bob Lambeck's black Duster? There was an article in Hot Rod or Camaro Craft magazine and it showed the build up. They claimed to use the factory oversize cast pistons. Stock was pretty close to stock back then.

either his Yellow or Red Dusters? I do know that both of those got sold to a gentleman in New York State in the late 80's or early 90's. As for the 1973 yellow California Missile, there was one or two owners between Chad Langdon and myself. I bought it from Mike Rice of Long Beach CA after he bought the Steve Hahn 1979 360 Volare and painted it Red and later it went to Mike Loge and Chad Loge had some great success with it. |
Re: Steel City Missile
I appreciate the picture and information from those who responded. These old race cars have had an interesting history of moving from one side of the country to the other with various owners. Some get lost in the shuffle and some are found and resurrected. I'm glad there are those out there that have some first hand knowledge of these old cars. Thanks again, Phil.

Re: Steel City Missile
Small world. In 1998 I bought a 73 Cuda S/ST-bracket car from Mr. Irving (Hope you're doing well) and was tempted to buy that yellow ex-Loge Duster sitting right next to it instead.
I remember the car was verrrrrry tempting... |

[QUOTE=Philip Saran;332965]James, I don't know if Bob Lambecks black 1974 Duster got repainted to be
either his Yellow or Red Dusters? I do know that both of those got sold to a gentleman in New York State in the late 80's or early 90's.> As an update, I talked to Steve Ekstrand (Tim's son) awhile back and he said that the black 1974 360 Duster was sold and the next two dusters (one yellow and one red) were built by them. He said the yellow duster was built in something like a two weeks time frame. |
