No playback tach.....
How might you recommend figuring out shift times without a playback tach? I'm looking to keep the learning curve time to a minimum, as my track is 3 hours away!! In my head I'm visioning me going down the track with a stopwatch in my hand!!! Turbo 400 in the car.
On a different topic how do you turn off the throttle stop if you want to bracket race all out? Will I need to change timer settings to do this? Thanks in advance, Sorry if some of the answers are obvious, I do search before I post. |
Re: No playback tach.....
Well you could put a video camera on the tach and make a couple of passes and watch it with a stop watch. Don't be surprised if the one-two shift happens quicker then the two-three shift.
To run all out, I set all four timers (on-off, on-off) to 13.00 or any convienent time that exceeds your ET. Hope this helps :) |
Re: No playback tach.....
Thank you Bill. I find it hard to find Throttle stop help stuff through Google, I don't want to become an annoyance, but I have a lot of learning to do and I hate to have to use an actual race to do so. I would be first round fodder for sure!!!!

Straight liner
Your welcome. What kind if stop are you running? If it's an inline cylinder type make sure that the pedal has a solid stop, if it doesn't it can drive you crazy! If you looking far an inexpensive video camera try tigerdirect.com |
Re: No playback tach.....
if you had a mega 450 box, you could record your run to find the shift point then use that time. also w/ the 450 you have two screens, one for bracket, one for pro, that way you do not have to wipe your t-stop time out going from one to the other...

Re: No playback tach.....
Bill- #1 stop air. But I do have a pedal stop already. I'm coming from 10.90 with no electronics.
Keith- I have a Dedenbear lightning, It's my understanding that it has a button to switch from pro tree to sportsman tree and remembers all settings for each. I have yet to run the car with the electronics. I have this fear of it shifting too late, but I guess that's why we have rev limiters!!!!!! Brad |
Re: No playback tach.....
OK, here is a suggestion then. put in the time you think, watch the tach, if it doesn't shift before you hit the desired rpm, shift it by hand, continue till you have it zeroed in...
as far as your other post about some that leave w/.000 in first timer. it takes about .020 (not sure of the exact #) for the t-stop to close. so it is not really .000. this maybe helpful for a VERY hard leaving car that does not want to pull the wheels out of the beams. |
Re: No playback tach.....
Yeah good point. Thanks.
Hmmm my car yanks the wheels out of the beams, I had to drop lots of air out the front tires and run the .03 button and I still go red if I try hard!!!!! I might experiment with that. Another question guys- When t stop racing if the stop comes on before the 60 ft timers is that a big deal as I'm so used to looking at that number for consistency. Does that question even make sense?!!!! I don't think I worded it right!!! |
Re: No playback tach.....
just sell ur old tach and buy a playback tach if u can pull to the track u can do that and yes if u put the throttle stop on or off before the 60 ft you will get funky 60 ft times so i guess if u are going to spend the money to go to the track spend it on **** that gives you info

Mickey, you're right!

Re: No playback tach.....
If you don't have enough hp to get the car past the 60ft timers with the setting you have in the stop now you can raise the stop rpm to consistantly get past the 60ft timers. If your car doesn't wheel stand too much, you can just put the stop on later (dragster's don't care door cars do) if the stop comes off after the 60ft timers every time your 60ft will tell you if you spin or not. If you have enough hp to get past the 60ft timers in this heat you should have no problem when the weather gets better. Hope this helps I have run door cars and dragsters on the stop and have a little experience with throttle stops.:)

Re: No playback tach.....
As far as shift timers you have to be careful staging with shift timers. If stage and your flickers and have to push the button again you have to remember to put the shifter back in 1st gear, or the brake won't hold. If you shift on rpm you won't have that problem. The trans will shift when you get to the correct rpm (no guessing) I'm sure shifting on time is the preferred method. I personally prefer the rpm method and no problems staging. How ever I am old and slow and would forget to put the shifter back in 1st gear when restaging. You could ask 10 people and get 10 different answers. Comming off the stop in a higher gear is suppose to make the car more consistent and also spends less time on the stop therefore more MPH. 1 staging problem rolling the beams cause the trans in 2nd gear might make you change your mind LOL :D

Re: No playback tach.....
:)Most people who shift on time while throttle stop racing go on the stop from .000 to .300 and shift out of 1st gear around .5 seconds, come off the stop in high gear. When you are staging the car if you flicker the light and hit the trans brake button, when you come off the button to re-stage your timer will shift in to 2nd gear while you are re-staging and the transbrake will not hold in second gear. You HAVE to put the shifter back in low gear before you stage again. If you don't the brake will not hold and you will roll the beams. As long as you dont have to hit the trans- brake a second time there is no problem.:)

Re: No playback tach.....
Got it. Thanks.

Re: No playback tach.....
What I just described to you happened 1st round at Stanton. The guy I ran 1st round flickered the blttom bulb, got off the button to stage an inch deeper and when he put his finger on the button it had shifted to 2nd gear and the trans brake didn't work in 2nd gear. He rolled the beam and I got a free pass to 2nd round. :)
