It might have been ask before but does anyone know who was the last A/MP Record Holder was before NHRA got rid of that class?

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Not real sure...going from memory...could it have been that guy with the old Corvette
from the Northwest...Sherrill? I think the name was. Also recall Rick Houser being listed I think...he's mostly remembered as being a SS/AA guy... think that he dabbled a bit in Modified...maybe he was driving someone else's car? Very hard to recall....1980-1981-1982-1983 or so time frame...no old copies of ND kickin around here....maybe someone has one out there with a definitive answer? |

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Sherrill Huff was from Kentucky, the guy you are thinking about was Terry Sherrill from Washington area last year for Mod was 81. Barrett was from Div 3 the younger brother of Marty Barrett Div 3 tech director. Rick had a C/Gas Pinto latter built a 351 C powered Mercury Capria the one from Eroupe wrecked a short time later at Edgewater Park Div 3 track in late 70's

remember seeing the name on the records page many years ago. Thought that Barrett usually ran B/G...or C/G. Sherrill Huff was a tough Modified competitior from Kentucky...and might have owned and managed the Ohio Valley Raceway near Louisville. Maybe he still does? Anybody know who the last G/MP record holder was...and what was the E.T. ? |

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
We held the MPH record in 1986.. Harold Stout( David Rampys sponsor) held both ET an MPH after that.. I think he was first in the 8's. I can stand easily corrected but I do have the certificates for the MPH part so that I am sure of. Seemed fast then.

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Dug up a copy of ND Aug.20.82 it shows Shioleno Coleman Alexander Wise 81 Chevy with the A/MP record at 9.19 150.00 set 3-82 at Baton Rouge. This is when M/P ran in comp. elim. When mod. ran it,s own class as of 5-81 the record was held by Reids Auto with a 69 Chevy at 9.41 145.86 set at Englishtown.I don,t know how long M/P ran in comp. till it was dropped. Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Thanks for the info...Forgot that M/P went to Comp...thought it went immediately into
Super Stock. Just can't remember everything... Do we have an answer for the original question on A/MP record? Recall the Reid's Auto entry...it was a Camaro driven by a guy named Lucier...think I saw it once or twice... Thanks gsa612 for the info on G/MP...I remember when the record was 11.91...by Blevins in the Nomad...but that was ages ago. I know eventually it got pushed into the 10's...but didn't think it went that deep. |
Re: A/MP Record Holder.
IIRC, I think Tom Haner in the ex-Lambeck 68 Barracuda had it at 9.01 at some point, not sure if he was the last.

Barretts Capri can be seen in the background of this picture. It was at the Cajun Nationals seen here running A/MP.

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Why did the N.H.R.A. ever get rid of modified production class?
This was some of the best racing I ever saw and I could never figure out why they got rid of it. Jimbo |
Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Many don't understand why they got rid of Modified Eliminator. Plenty of cars. More than Comp, which they kept.

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
I am almost certain that Dave Hughes was the first A/MP car in the 8s with his '58 Corvette. I seem to remember National Dragster making mention of it during coverage of Indy one year. Not sure if Dave was the last record holder, but I know he held it on numerous occasions.

I was at the Edgewater points race when Rick crashed the Capri. Something was broken in the stearing as I remember the front wheels toeing out during his wheel stand and on the 1-2 shift. The cat took a hard left off the track past the finish line & hit a Gas class Vega that was coming up the return road (before the days of full length concrete walls). I have a picture of the Vega somewhere, I'll post it when I find it. I am pretty sure no one was hurt. |

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
As many of you know, I don't get on this blog very often but like the rest of us I'm not doing much to keep busy during this Covid-19 shut down and I saw this very old question that I can offer an answer to.
In the Nov. 5, 1982 ND on the National record holders page 48 the A/MP record was listed as 9.19 @ 150.00 mph set on 3-82 at Baton Rouge by Shioleno-Coleman-Alexander-Wise-Hadley '81 Chevy. All modified cars were made part of Competition Eliminator for the '82 season. I'll include the remainder FYI and enjoyment. BMP 9.67, C 9.60, D 9.76, E 9.92, ASM 9.81, BSM 9.75, CSM 9.85. Two of my "old" friends had their cars for sale (with pictures) Paul Mercure's '67 Camaro (18K) that he had just won the world finals with and Charlie & Jeff Taylor,s J/SA '69 Camaro convertible (9.8K) and their ramp truck. I was listed as the SS/JA record holder @ 10.79 Norwin Palmer was crowned the Competition Eliminator World Champ, Tex Miller champ in stock, Keith Lynch Super Stock. I was third behind Dan Dalrymple and 78 points ahead of Sonny Ray. |

Re: A/MP Record Holder.
Dave Hughes had the record at 8.78 in I believe 1985. He retired the car and I bought it from Dave in 1987 minus engine. I ran in comp in A/MP before NHRA dropped Modified and ran it in B/G before they dropped Gas forcing me to run in to E/A. Harold Stout ran a Firebird in A/MP in 1988 and he might have lowered the record. By the way, this Vette which I still own is Tony Feil then Joey Heffiermen Sr.former cars.
