East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame Reunion

Okay we are four days away. Nostalgia drag racing history in downtown Henderson, NC.
Friday, car show and barbque at Satterwhite Point on Kerr Lake. The fall of the year and the cars are on the paved parking area near the lake, bring your camera.

Saturday, Downtown Henderson, NC, hundreds and thousands of Classic Cars and Trucks, and tons of classic race cars, Sox & Martin, Bob Banning, Hubert Platt and many, many more. Tens of Tens old race car owners, drivers, track owners all from the history of drag racing. There will be a Motown Missle display with five cars including one currently undergoing restoration. Cacklefest time we will crank some gassers, superstock/prostock and yes we will burn some nitro. Nothing brings back the memories like the site of all the cars, the sounds of the open headers and the smell of racing fuel.

Sunday, Vance-Granville Community College, car display and a room with old scrapbooks, magazines and old racers. Stop and look through the scrapbooks and remember the days. Special this year, a panel discussion featuring Tom Hoover, Ramchargers, Ted Spehar and others who were involved in the design and building of the Motown Missle cars on Sunday morning prior to the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies beginning at 12:00 pm. Bret Kepner is MC and his knowledge of drag racing history is incredible.

Not part of the East Coast Drag Times event, but Friday night Roxboro Motorsports Park, formerly know to old timers as "Person County Dragway," will open their gates at 6:30 pm for pre-1976 Nostagia drag racing. Match racing, SuperStock gamblers race (bracket) and test-n-tune. No telling what cars you will see running down this 50+ year old dragstrip again. Few years ago it was Sox&Martin vs Motown Missle last year it was "The Mad Frenchman" maverick and others who were in town for the reunion.

And yes there will be a East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame Museum in Henderson, NC. As you come into town, this year, on I-85 at US 39 look at the billboard, " Future home of East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame."

It sure would've been nice if Don Carlton was still around to drive his old Mopar Missile...

But try to get some of these old timers to do some match races in their old race cars! ;)

Anyone know if Todd Warner is going to show up with his race car collection from Florida, I believe he owns the Herb McCandless '72 Dodge Demon pro stocker seen here in this video...

I have been there all ten years and will be there again this year. There are others that have emailed that they are coming.

I don't know if Chuck will be there. You never know who will show up. In the last 2 days we have had people call who were not able come and now they are coming.

Hemidart, I responded to you private message. If you are a MOPAR fan, if you are standing at the intersection on Garnett Street with the "Cash Point" machine to your right, when you look down the street you will think you have died and gone to MOPAR Heaven. I made that comment one year to some members of a MOPAR Club and then I realize what I was looking at and what I had said. On the street was Motown Missle, Dandy Dick Landy, Sox & Martin all lined up side by side along the side of the street.

Just a FYI, make sure you take lots of photos of the old Super Stock & Pro Stock race cars there, and report back here with some of them in the Classracer threads...have fun there. :)

My grandson and I picked up Akron Arlen Vanke at the airport yesterday. Very good conversation on the way up to Henderson, NC. On I-85, about 5 miles from Henderson, we meet a Don Grotheer Cuda being towed on an open trailer. Now you got to know the conversation of old times really picked up.

Got to Henderson and motel lots were starting to fill up. Walmart parking lot looked like a pit area. Walmart is adjacent to three of the host motels.

Going to load the race car and head to Henderson for the barbeque, car show, at Satterwhite Point and then to Roxboro Motorsports Park, "Person County Dragway"

See you there

The hightlight for me this year was the tribute to Don Carlton and the "Missile" program. The clinic today lead by Ted Spehar, Dick Oldfield, Tom Hoover and Joe Pappas was spellbinding throughout the 2 hours as they discussed in great detail how much time went into the development of Pro Stock in the early days.

Frank, did you take anything to the show or are you currently working on any new projects or just kicking back right now...I remember those old Super Stock Reunions you used to have back in the late 80's early 90's, would you happen to have any old photos from back then. :)

I didn't take anything this year. I was there to introduce my old T/F Motorcycle buddy Pete Hill into the HOF. We raced each other regularly before I retired in '85, the same year I started the S/S Reunions. I do have hundreds of pictures from the 20 events I organized but they will not post here for some reason. They post fine on the HAMB and I have probably 100 on the Super Stock Reunion thread there.

I am presently finishing a '53 Studebaker coupe with a 354 Chrysler Hemi. I did a body off the frame and it looks like it came from the factory with this engine. I will have it out next spring.

I agree 1000% to hear it straight from the "horses mouth" as to how they built that program and the stories that went along with them for a second generation drag racer it was like going to school on Mopar drag racing. As a testement to how important these guys were to look around and see the likes of Roy Hill and Hubert Platt sitting in the clinic was awesome. I especialy have a special affection for the Missile program since i had a chance to drive one of the Original Missile cars a few years back during the reunion weekend @ Roxboro ( see my sig pic) I videotaped the whole clinic and i'm sure i watch it millions of times..

I got these from Marc Rozman. I got some from Stewart of the four "Missile" cars. For some reason they painted the wire car up with the Mopar Missile name instead of Don Carlton on the side like it was originally. A bad mistake in my opinion.

Re: East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame Reunion

I have recieved a message from Joe Pappas via Stewart regarding the Mopar Missile name on the wire car instead of Don Carlton on the sides.

"There is no doubt that the wire car was meant to be the next Missile and it indeed was - minus a paint job... Arnie did the right thing in keeping the Missile the Missile. Just because the car had a slightly different paint job with minor detail differences on it AFTER the Missile program ended is of no matter. Donnie painted and trimmed the car slightly differently - so what? At that point it was no longer the Missile."

My apologies to the Missile crew for my opinion based on old photos. I think it is obvious to anyone familiar with the cars that it was clearly intended to be the next Missile, just the program was terminated before it ever hit the track with the Missile name on it.

James, so whats going on with the Motown Missile '72 Plymouth Cuda that was there...it seems that they really haven't done to much work on it in the past year or so since it was last reported on.
