My road runner was prepped in his shop back in the mid 70s, long before I got it.

Re: Akron Arlen
One thing you don't want to do, is confuse a car built by Arlen to one built in his shop. Very workmanlike, I guess is the right way to say it.
Yes, it was built as if it was a hemi car, with a 5.13 and tall tires, but running a 440. It's an original 69-1/2 car. They treated the factory stamping lines as if they meant cut here. I'll just say they went too far and leave it at that. I didn't scale it before I disassembled it but I should have. It had a big old heavy bar in it though. |
Re: Akron Arlen
Always liked Arlen Vanke's first factory B029 '68 Hemi Barracuda...

Re: Akron Arlen
Akron Arlen Vanke was a racer to contend with back in the match race days. After over 30+ years of not seeing him I have had the pleasure of picking him up at the airport in Raleigh and riding to Henderson, NC to the Drag Race Reunion for the past two years. We have talked about a lot of old races and a lot of old racers during those trips. Arlen, I understand has had some medical issues since I saw him in Henderson this year. I hope that he is doing better and will be able to be back next year.

Can anyone help me identify what car/driver Arlen beat to win the 1969 SS/BA CLASS title at the Winternats?

I think the was the first one to get the "J" converter and he dominated the race. |
Re: Akron Arlen
The cuda with the super tricks and drag 500's looks great when I was young always wanted a drag car with a pair of drag 500's but they stopped making em before I got a car.

Here is a pic of what I think is #983 Vanke's SS/B Race Hemi Cuda, twin Holleys on top, vs Bill Allie's #901 SS/DA glass hood Fairlane, also twin Holleys but probably 80hp less under the hood give or take a little. I think all the top Fairlanes has the Big F heads and Tunnel-Wedge intake by then, so up near 600hp anyway with 13.2 or so compression. https://archive.petersen.org/pages/p...php?ref=309285 |

Yeah, that's the only reason I opened the thread. I knew he'd later moved away from Pontiac. But, being a Pontiac Freek, when I see his name I automatically think of the Pontiacs he drove back in the early to mid '60's. |

Vanke won SS/B Grotheer SS/BA Grotheer also won Top Stock over the Jerry Harvey Ford. Any idea on the class runners up? |

Here's what I have on 69 Winternationals - the usual caveats & comments welcome.
Note there's a LOT more factoring by now. I have the 427 Fairlane 8v glass at 472FHP but I think I settled on 465FHP. Doesnt really matter, they end up in the same class. |
