Working on the Mustang

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/DSC_0808.jpg

Old paint started peeling and had a few dents that needed fixing so we started working on the car. Body work sure isn't much fun. LOL

The car has been a race car since at least the mid 70's but it had been in the South so it still had a bit of rust here and there so that gave us more fun work to do:

Decided to add a halo and make it a cage:

Finally got to spray some primer:

Here's Alex D and his new bride Beth right after they got married in Vegas earlier this year:

And here's Tony D after he just heard that they were serving In N Out burgers: LOL

We're getting there. Hope to have everything back together soon and get the motor done too.

Yeah, Dave is really tall. Super nice guy too.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/DSC_0272.jpg

My brother did the painting and body work at his place.

Good guess about my login.

Don't know if the car will be ready by then. Was going to just hone and put new rings but found a problem with the block.

Window net installed. Guess the bars can use some paint and the shop floor needs a good cleaning to keep from tracking all the sanding dust inside the car. LOL

Re: Working on the Mustang

Updating this thread. The car is pretty much finished except for getting the engine together and throwing it in the car. Don't know when we'll get to is since we're busy starting to get ready to move out of CA.

Redoing this thread from the start since I redid my photobucket photos and the old ones are gone.

This is how the car used to look with Alex D. behind the wheel.

Started taking the car apart:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pse6bce7d4.jpg

Fenders and hood hanging on the wall.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps064cb103.jpg

Engine out.

Took the interior apart and added a halo to the roll bar:

Cut out the rear tail light panel and trial fit the new panel, decklid, and end caps which needed a lot of work:

Tried on the new front end pieces which actually fit pretty well:

Got the new parts fitted pretty well and went on to spraying on primer:

Finally got to the point of getting paint on. I think it was over 100* at this time.

It was kind of a pain figuring out how the headlight buckets and stuff went together. The things should come with some instructions and at least have some holes predrilled in the buckets. LOL

The hood pin brackets were a pain too. Got the hood opening mesh on.

Stuck the lace with lettering on.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8492275b.jpg

Got the interior back together and installed the window net. Tracked a lot of dust into the car. LOL

I think my brother did a pretty good job with the body and paint especially in the ridiculous heat. We're definitely not up to a Rusty Gillis skill level though. One of these days we'll get the engine back together and into the car. Don't want to do something like this again, at least for a long time. LOL

Car looks great!!! My uncle turned his 68 mustang into 68 Shelby, then to a 67 Shelby. So I know how much work it is. We had a 70 GT500 showcar back in the 80's, Love the 69 and 70 Shelby's!! Good luck when you get it back out there!

Yup, I have the car now.... Jeff bought the car from me in 2000 and sold it back to me in 2006. I owned the car since 1987 and turned it into a 68 Shelby in 1998. Jeff then turned it into a 67 Shelby because of the better engine combo for the 67. Jeff put lots of work into the car before a bought it back.

First photo is Jeff driving when it was a 68, next photo is me at a division race a few years back.

The 69 Shelby looks very cool.

Thanks for posting the photos. Was it a 68 CJ car to start with? Your red Shelby is one of my favorite stockers.

Your brother did a great job fitting all those Shelby parts!!

Re: Working on the Mustang

Thanks for the kind words, It is an original 68 Cobra Jet car, I bought it from a guy in Ohio back in 87. The car was raced most of its life, I was the third owner.

I guess the car should be restored, but I'm having to much fun racing it. You guys did a great job on the 69, and I know how much work it takes. Being you will have the only 69 Shelby stocker, I think it was well worth it.

Thanks.

I wouldn't restore it. The car looks and runs too good for that.

It was Alex Denysenko's idea to turn it into a Shelby clone.

Re: Working on the Mustang

Thor was able to get the car to the Spokane track to get used to it since he's normally a 4 speed guy. We're still trying to get things ironed out.

Couple shots from a few weeks ago:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psruollpyt.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psj5vzyv07.jpg

And here's one that Thor's friend, Jim took last weekend:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psnxfksz8h.jpg

Sure do miss Alex Denysenko. It was his idea to convert the car to a '69 Shelby clone. He drove the car at Vegas and Pomona several times with Tony D assisting. Sure wish Tony was around to give us newbies a hand.
